I've never looked at the 35/30... I do have 14" 35 Remington Contender barrel, & a 35 Whelen in a Remington 700, & was thinking about a 38-55 for a Martini single shot, but decided to do a 356 Winchester build instead a search on Midway for 35/30 turns up a special order Redding die set for $200.00 & that's about it... 356 Winchester turns up a boat load of dies & brass etc. as does 38-55... I know you can't just jump up to the 45-70 case for the 356 Winchester... & I'm certainly not the guy that turns his back on something unique or obsolete... but the 38-55 has proper headstamped brass in stock, all the dies, even loaded ammo in stock... I would guess it would be much cheaper to set up in the 1st place , & the gun would have a higher value once the conversion was complete... that said... if the 35/30 is what you have your mind set on... I say go for it... why be "normal" i noticed that ch-4d has the 35-30/30(35/30) dies for sale. they $87 + sh. i've bought my 500L dies for $85 or so. i know that buying dies is a one time deal, or as i say, ehhh. i don't plan on selling the m94, i'll keep it till i'm dead then one of my sons can/cannot have it. a 38-55 single shot takes some doing, but i want that too. probably a sharps or high wall.

Gary Reeder has a 35 wildcat based on a improved 30-30 case. His website says that he has dies for it. Says it's more powerful that a 35 Remington. 38-55 necked down would probably work better than 30-30 cases, Or if you could find them 375 Win. cases if you wanted to load them hotter. Ron nah, i'm more into heavy cast boolits and it will be plodding along . i've gotten over "how much velocity" and "you could if you'd have a lite weight boolit". i've done them days. now i'd want( and have) 500L in a 23" MGM barrel(tc encore) that goes around 1200-1300fps(460gr lfn gc), instead of a 500 alaskan that goes 1700-1800fps? (460gr lfn gc). i'd figure that a 35/30 that has a 250- 280gr? fn gc and goes 1600-1800fps, then its look out deer/black bear, the 35/30 has come to town! hey, wait a minute!!! i plod and i'm overweight too!!! now if the cartridge was handi-capabled, it would be 3 for 3!!!

it has to be mine too!!! i had a m98 mauser action(i believe it was FL) and i had built it in 7x57 with a 20" douglas premium barrel. i could shoot 1/2" holes at 100 yards all day. then i gave it to my son on his 16th birthday. i'm glad you have it!!!

Either the 35/30-30 or the 38-55 would be a great choice. You might even consider Jes's 405 JES wildcat. I had JES Reboring do a 375 Whelen for me from a 30-06 with a rough bore. He had it back to me in 10 days from my door back to my door. It shot great. I've always thought the 35/30-30 would be an awesome little wildcat. Should be a great cast bullet gun. i was thinking about 405 JES, but i like the 35-30/30(or 35/30). i would do a 38-55 but i'd like it to a single shot rifle, either the tc encore or something like an hi wall or a sharps.

my first rifle is a winchester(post '64) model 1894 in 30-30 win. we had some great times but i retired her for good (about 20+ years ago). i was moving (i forget where, it was 15-16 years ago) the m94 broke its front sight. then about 14 years ago, i noticed that surface rust was on the receiver. i tried everything and the kitchen sink but i couldn't get it off. i took it to a gunsmith who could reblue it and he said "don't waste your time, the receiver was made out of sintered metal casting." so i took it home and i forgot to buy a front sight. and there it sat, until.... i was going to buy a mauser 98 or a montana rifle in 257 bob. i figured out that it would cost me x amount of dollars. or i could spend that amout and i could get a,b and c finally done. since it will take a couple of months to do the m94, (a & b i'm doing), i want to rebore it to 35-30/30. ( i have 30-40 krag and 165gr ranch dog.) www.35caliber.com/since i've got into the cast boolits game, it seems like a great fit. the area that i hunt it will close range type of thing(deer/black bear), about 50 yards. but i will take it to 150 yards. i've been thinking that the 35-30/30 will need a "mans" boolit, 250 - 280gr fn gc, to do a "mans" game, deer/black bear. sorry, i'm laughing too hard!!! i believe it will go 1600-1800fps. i'll probably be using a peep sight, (its a top eject, 1973) and for the front sight it will plain small bead or a fire sight. i want to do the 35-30/30 and i probably will. but what other calibers(38-55/26"+ barrel is on my bucket list) should i use?

9.3x57(.366") or 9.5x57(.375") will do it. and it won't recoil as much.
although they are rare, just find yourself an 8x57 and neck it up to either caliber.

i finally got around to sighting in my 500L(tc encore, 23" MGM barrel). i took quite a bit(file, both hand and grinder) of my front sight off. it took me a while to do it, but next all i have to do is take my skinner sight down and right and then i'll have it.
i was using a 450gr wfn(460gr weighed) and 21.0gr of 2400 and 16.0gr of hs-6. they were both starting loads. 2400 made the bore dirty, it could have been lube or maybe the crimp wasn't tight enuff. hs-6 was more or less clean. oh, i never even thought of size of the bore. knowing MGM, theres a good(better than good, great) chance that it will be .510". so i did .512" boolits.
i started off with the 2400 and about 4th or 5th shot i had to tighten my stock. it was 1 - 1 1/2 turns to tighten the allen head. not much but it does make your shots go place that they shouldn't. i was only shooting 50 yards, but using a lite load of 2400 did not impress the gun. i've shot 3 or 4 groups that go 3 - 3 1/2" at 50 yards(3 shots).
next i went to hs-6. the difference was outstanding. i shot 2 or 3 groups that would go 3/4 - 1 1/2" at 50 yards(3 shots). that one i'll have to test for. i did one group that was 3, 4 and 5 shots. the 3 shots goes approx under 3/4". the 4th shot i must have pulled because it goes 2 1/2". the 5th shot( i have to load some more up), not counting the 4th, goes approx 1".
i don't have pix, mostly because i was sighting the rifle. next time my handi-capable butt will have to take some pix.
now, the big question is how does it recoil? not much. it does recoil about as much as my ruger #1(8.5lbs) in 270 or a tc venture(7.5lbs) in 25-06. i may be explaining it wrong but here it goes, when shooting a 500L the recoil doesn't go like a 44mag with full power loads, it goes like a 44 sp with skeeter's load. the recoil is also long and drawn out, not short, violent and to the point. i could shoot the 500L all week and twice on sunday. now i haven't tried full power loads like h110 or win296, i'll never need them. but lite to medium loads, the 500L and i will take them!!!
PS i think that 2400 goes approx 1300fps+/- and hs-6 goes approx 1200fps+/-. i'm just guessing........

i can only think of one 7mm mag. in my area(swPA) it would be the '06 or the 270 with the 7mm-08 coming on strong.

I had an Encore with the rifle stock and an MGM barrel in 500 S&W for a while. It has the distinction of being the only rifle to give me a magnum eyebrow. Recoil would also batter the forend screw on mine so you might want to keep a close eye on that with yours. I would probably still own mine if it had come with a good peep rear sight and a post or bead front sight since it packed a punch and was a handy length. a friend owns a 500 s&w in handi-rifle that he'd let me shoot. and yes, i too have a magnum eyebrow!!! he has a 500gr jacketed hollow point with h110 he gave me. ouch!!! thank you, but no thank you!!! i shot it once and only once. i'm going to try hs-6. it should be enough to go 1100-1300fps.
