thanks!!!
for a peep sight, it shoots great!!! i am getting 2 - 2 1/2" at 100 yards(5 shots, bench). i have done a couple 1 1/2" group at 100 yards and one that is 1 1/4" at 100 yards.
i use hs-6 exclusively, tho i am having hard time if i want 16.0gr or 16.5gr of powder. they both shoot great, 2 - 2 1/2" at 100 yards, and the difference between the two is negligible( i have to go to my trusty caliper, find out group size to .001",...). i'm sorta leaning to 16.0gr, but what do youse guys think?

I watched as a champion pistol shot used 240gr JHP's on a large bison bull,(carcass weight was 1600+) and placed 5 shots in the bulls neck and the bull trotted off after every shot. He finally was able to use my 320gr SSK bullets and break the hip as the animal departed and then deliver a killing shot from behind. Upon skinning we found all five JHP's in a span no larger than his out stretched hand, perfectly mushroomed and no deeper than 6". The 320gr in the pelvis was still in good shape, and resembled an unfired bullet, the one to the head was not recovered. Proper bullets will do wonders, improper ones will always disappoint........the 240's are good for deer sized but not thick heavy muscled game. Trapr Sounds like my experience on a cow elk a few years ago. I was "hunting" on a Texas game ranch that wasn't far from home. i went off and left a box of Keith loads on my workbench and all I had with me were two Speed loaders of Hornady factory loads with the 240 XTP. I put three of them in the left shoulder, all three hit the heavy shoulder bones. And nothing but tiny fragments penetrated to the vitals. I put a fourth shot into the neck and broke her spine. I had similarly poor performance with the Hornady gummy tips in 45-70, on a nice Kansas whitetail and a feral hog. Those were the only two 45-70 bullets I ever had not to give complete penetration. Luckily I recovered both animals. No more jacketed Hornadys for me. i was hunting deer back in the early '90s when i had a ruger srh(7.5" barrel) in 44 mag. i used a 200gr and a 240gr hornady xtp with a overmax load of win296(i know, i was young and dumb etc). i shot 5 or 6 deer with them and they all did opened up and did pass throughs. the furthest i shot was 125+/- yards, the bullet went behind the shoulder and thru a couple of ribs on the way out. (it was a 200gr xtp) all of deer were drt and all, except for one, where 20 - 40 yards away. now i didn't break shoulders , all of them were (nearly) broadside shots. my little brother shot a deer with hornady's gummy tips and it was devastating to say the least. he shot it behind the shoulder and the lungs and heart where instantly made into soup. the entrance wound was similarly devastating, it and the shoulder had to be thrown away. there was no exit wound, the gummy tip looked like it had exploded , there were pieces of the bullet that he found that measured smaller than 1/8". i've been shooting cast boolits so i can't say if the hornady's were or are good enuff. i have been shooting a ruger sbh(4 5/8") in 44mag but i like the 44 sp with 250gr mihek hp and unique.

my ruger sbh(4 5/8" barrel) in 44 mag with a 310gr lee fn gc at 1000-1100fps. the 310gr would be something like 20-22bhn.

Todd, of course you are correct, but we can do better. Why not take full advantage of the large diameter of these half-inch rounds? yep!!! i've wanted a 500L in a revolver for years, i almost had enuff money to buy it, but i had a stroke. the right arm/leg and much of my speech is greatly diminished. i have tried to use my ruger sbh(4 5/8" barrel) , but i can no longer go to 125 yards, it's more like 30 yards. and i'm doing unique type loads, 250gr mihek hp/44sp and 280gr wfn/44mag. i have the 500L in a rifle but i only use it for hs-6, it doesn't do 2400 that well. i use a mbw in 450gr lfn gc and i guess it goes around 1200-1300fps. i still have to decide to use it in either 16.0 or 16.5gr of hs-6. (5 - 5 shot groups at 100 yards). next i want to do a 520 - 530gr lfn and hs-6 and 2400.

Max, You ever try shooting the Lyman 515141 in the 500L? I have this mold and I use it because it feeds very nicely in .50-cal based rifles. "typical" large meplat pistol bullets don't. I tried it briefly in my 500 JRH, crushed down to .500, with mediocre results, but I hardly gave it a full shot before I sent the 500 JRH down the road. For a 500L, this bullet is at the top of my list to make work. I don't need meplat when I have 450 grains of weight, 50 caliber worth of diameter, and enough case capacity to get me over 1000 fps. But the nose still worries me since it is not a "standard" profile for pistol bullets. So, think it can be made to work for 100 yard accuracy in the BFR? i would try a 20/1 or a 40/1 (lead/tin). they killed buffalo with it(50-70 gov) and the 500L is just that. since i am cheap, i've gotten a 500L in tc encore 23" MGM barrel with skinner sights, i'd shoot that one for deer/black bear.

i bought a sightmark mini shot reflex sight for my ruger sbh. i didn't want to spend that kind of money, so i bought the sightmark. (also a weigand mini mount www.jackweigand.com/Ruger-Revolver-Mini-Mount.html ) i used it for about a year(shot it 1500+ times) and it never failed. then i took it off and i put a 45-70 handi under the sightmark and its still going strong(about 2 years). i have a a one hole sight ( www.warrencustomoutdoor.com/ohs-ruger.html ) for my ruger sbh. but i still know that it will be accurate with a reflex sight.
