it finally came, my 500 linebaugh!!! it is a(tc encore) 23" MGM heavy factory barrel that is matte finished. it also has skinner sights, both front and back. the brass is starline and the boolits are a 450gr(460gr weighed them) lfn gc that montana bullets makes. i have unique and 2400 but next month i should get hs-6. the 500L is a hunting cartridge(whitetail/black bear in my neck of the woods), so i will take anything under 3" at 100 yards(3 shots, it may be 5 shots). it will go no higher than 3" at 50 yards and dead on at 100 yards. i'm just guessing, but it shouldn't be more than 8 - 10" low at 125 yards, but i'll see.my 500L will be a close-in rifle, so 50 yards should be about max distance, but just in case, i'll do a deer/bear out to 100-125 yards. unique and hs-6 will be all i need to go 1100-1300fps. the yorkie queen buttons, thinks that 500L should be bigger

I had an Encore with the rifle stock and an MGM barrel in 500 S&W for a while. It has the distinction of being the only rifle to give me a magnum eyebrow. Recoil would also batter the forend screw on mine so you might want to keep a close eye on that with yours. I would probably still own mine if it had come with a good peep rear sight and a post or bead front sight since it packed a punch and was a handy length.

Nice!
What you've got there is the Smokeless 50-70! Which might make it more like a Smokeless 50-90!

A friend of mine, a fellow forum member just shot a Buffalo with his 500 S&W Hand rifle.

Looks like a fun rifle. What's not to like about a big bullet. Even at 1100fps it'll still hit like a train.

thanks!!!
for a peep sight, it shoots great!!! i am getting 2 - 2 1/2" at 100 yards(5 shots, bench). i have done a couple 1 1/2" group at 100 yards and one that is 1 1/4" at 100 yards.
i use hs-6 exclusively, tho i am having hard time if i want 16.0gr or 16.5gr of powder. they both shoot great, 2 - 2 1/2" at 100 yards, and the difference between the two is negligible( i have to go to my trusty caliper, find out group size to .001",...). i'm sorta leaning to 16.0gr, but what do youse guys think?

Have you chronographed your loads? Sounds like you have a winner. If both loads are giving you the same accuracy, then I'd lean toward the 16 grains... if the velocity is where you want it.

well, i, ah.........shot my chrony some time ago and i, uh..., you know i....um...i am a bad boy.... most of the time, i really don't need it. for me, 200 yards is a long shot. i don't plan on the 500L much beyond a 100 yards. i know i should pony the money up(like around $120-200), but i keep forgetting about it.

Changing topic somewhat, your Yorkie queen sure looks like a Chorkie I have. They are a 1st generation mix of Chihuahua and Yorkie and a jumping bean. Long legged with wiry hair and fast as lightning.
I like your idea of picking a velocity range and sticking with it. Knowing your rifle/load sure makes it easy to hit what you are shooting at. Plus recoil is NOT something you can ignore.

Nice! What you've got there is the Smokeless 50-70! Which might make it more like a Smokeless 50-90! well i was going to try bullberry barrels and their 50-70 gov, but i decided to try 500L in MGM barrel. MGM doesn't have a 50-70 gov reamer and chambering, only bullberry does. since i've have a 20 vartarg, 6.5 creedmoor and the 444 marlin in MGM barrels, it wasn't hard for me to decide which to go to.

I just sold a new Caldwell for cheap. Another forum member got it, so that's cool... but they really weren't that bad as I recall. I think I got mine on a sale from Graf's for under $100
