Bob Mernickle is an old friend, and I use his PS6-SA with my USFA .44 Special Sheriff's Model. Like it a lot. For the best value in the business, you can't beat Rob LEAHY at Simply Rugged...my Ruger .44 Special Sheriff's model rides in one of Rob's cross draws...

I was looking at Taylor & Company's website, and I noticed that they had both 38-40 and 32-20 SAA clones. Am inclined to pick up a pair of 38-40s, because the oddballs have a way of disappearing...I got the last 2 .44 Russian Schofield short barrels...

You know, Max, I've really wanted a nice fallow deer for some obscure reason. When I was in NZ last year, it was on my list and I was tracking a really spectacular deer, but filming always takes precedent and I just ran out of time. When I was at FTW last fall I had planned on taking a big fallow after the whitetail hunt, but…surprise…the clock ran out again. At some point I'd like to take a bison for the meat…remind me to tell you about the cull bison hunt we filmed, which almost convinced me to NEVER film a hunting show again!
Yes, I'll be at NRA and look forward to sitting down and talking a bit! I'm thinking of launching a handgun hunting show online, and I'd like you to meet my Producer, John Carter. I think I can gin up a pretty good show, and I suspect I can lay my hands on enough seed money to launch. I firmly believe the Internet is our future and that's my focus for this year. I really want your input on this!
Text me at 303-810-4429 or leave a message with your number at the Outdoor Sportsman Group booth. I'll be signing at the booth 1-2PM on Friday and 9-10AM in Sunday.
Looking forward to seeing you, and congrats on a spectacular new book!

So I got my 45-70 BFR, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the gun. The trigger is super ( a little better than 2 pounds), the sights are very good and the overall fit and finish of the gun strikes me as quality.
Going to take it out tomorrow and start out with the loads I have on hand -- 405-gr "Trapdoor," Hornady Leverevolution 325-gr and maybe some a little hotter.
My question for you guys is that if I want to take the BFR beyond "range toy," maybe for hogs or exotics in Texas, which direction would you suggest I go in reloading? My general philosophy is heavy bullets at sane velocities, which is how I loaded for my J.D. Jones T/C years ago, which was a deer thumping machine. I didn't keep a record of those loads ( stupid me), but they were 350-400 gr softer lead than I'd choose to go to today.
Any favorites?
Thanks!

FWIW, I have a Wilson Combat .338 Federal…injuries prevented me from getting into the field with it over the last season, but it is hands-down my favorite AR right now. Billy Wilson says it's pretty much the only gun he hunts with these days. For an episode of SHOOTING GALLERY Richard Mann and I are going to South Africa on a "Scout Rifle Safari" for plains game in June. His gun will be a one-off Rem Model 7 in .308; mine will be an old Ruger Frontier .338 Federal, as overhauled by Freddie Blish@ROBAR. I chose the .338 for just a little more ummph than my GSR .308 with heavier bullets, and with the Scout set-up it is, realistically, a 300-yard rifle.

I ONLY use my FFL to ship now. Several years back I had ATF fall all over me on shipping guns...lost guns, spent $12K in legal fees...I was right all along...ATF didn't give a s%$t!

Max, I'm about a quarter through the book, and I wanted to say I stand in awe!
Beautiful book, superbly written, so chocked full of information I'm going to have to read it a couple of more times.
Wonderful job, my friend!

The Standard SAAs shown at SHOT were pretty spectacular…Tony Galazan, who owns Standard and CT Shotgun, and I went through them, and the machine work was excellent, what I'd expect from a company that makes $100,000 shotguns. One cool thing about them was that the grips are made from "leftovers" from their mega-expensive shotgun stocks. I've been in their "wood room" in CT, and they have a magnificent selection of walnut. His color case-hardening was also something to see. In .45 Colt for now…I lobbied for 7 1/2 inch .44 Special. I wouldn't be surprised if we aren't seeing the old USFA machinery at work…

Hey Max…sorry we didn't connect at SHOT…NRA???
I just notified Magnum Research that I was buying the 45-70 BFR they sent out months ago, because…'MERICA! Or something like that. Actually, I put it to a vote on social media on whether I should purchase the big blaster…guess how the vote went?
I'm thinking of taking it on a hog hunt down in Texas just for the heck of it, then film it for my new Internet project, SHOOTING GALLERY ONLINE. I've wanted a 45-70 since I got rid of my J.D. Jones 10-inch 45-70 Contender, the "knuckle-buster." Couple of years ago I shot one of the old Century Mfg brass-framed single actions and it got me all interested in the big blaster again. Realistically, I figure the 405-gr lead factory loads will do a perfectly adequate job of whacking piggies.
In a case of thread drift, I thought I'd mention I've recently discovered the Zen of the Desert Eagle .50AE. I hadn't shot one in ages when we did the GUN STORIES WITH JOE MANTEGNA episode on the Deagle. It was so much fun to shoot I got one of my own (in post-Apoc WMD ceracote, no less). The beast shoots irrationally well!

If I didn't want to pop the bucks for a JP or a Wilson Combat, I'd go with a Daniel Defense. Nothing but great reviews on it…planning on buying one myself. The Ruger 762 is wicked accurate…I took a class at FTW Ranch with mine, out to 1000 yards, and it was a rock. It's a piston gun, so not a lot of mix and match (mine now has a Geiselle trigger). I have a Colt 901 I've shot in competition (also with a Geiselle trigger), but that big monolithic front end with the quad rail sucks. They make it without the quad now, I think.
My favorite new AR is a Wilson Combat in .338 Federal…like every Wilson I've shot super accurate, great trigger out of the box, reasonable weight and, hey, the .338 Federal is a cool cartridge. I'm trying to get Hornady to load me up some with GMXs….I got the brass, Plan to use it on a trophy whitetail hunt later this year in Texas...

I'm waiting around for one from Lipsey's.
My understanding is the Garretts are too long for the #1... Should be an easy fix, or am I crazy?

We built up a super accurate AR-22 for a SHOOTING GALLERY episode. Spike's Tactical built the upper on a Lothar Walther barrel with a match chamber. The lower was custom built for the gun by JP Rifles, with a trigger designed solely for .22 and nor interchangeable with 5.56.
I took about a dozen different brands of ammo to the range to see what it wanted. The first brand, CCI Tactical -- which I'd never heard mentioned as a tack driver -- put the first 5 shots at 25 yards from prone on a rolled up jacket into a single ragged hole.never tried any other ammo, just took it to the range next door, shot a Appleseed and got the "Rifleman" patch. Since the little bitty prone targets counted double , was like shooting fish in a barrel.
Of course we ended up with over $2K in the thing. When CCI Tactical dried up for a while, it became an expensive door stop. Match chamber was finicky as hell...only other that that would really deliver the groups was Federal Gold Match, and it would invariably light strike one every 100 or so rounds. When CCI Tactical reappeared, I bought a bunch of it.
Realistically, my 2 TAC SOLS and my Clark 10-22 will shoot just as well without all the ammo drama.

Oh Axe...you shoulda known better!
I have a Wilson upper on a Wilson lower ( seemed to make sense). I had the upper for a long time before I went forward on the project. We've got an upcoming hog trip for SHOOTING GALLERY ONLINE with the.little beast. A few points to watch out for:
1) It recoils, but doesn't seem that big a deal to me. Think 45/70 in a Ruger #1. 2) Forget what you read...magazines are a BIG problem, especially metal mags. I finally got one metal mag to work by bending up the leading part of the rails to present the cartridge higher and grinding a half-moon cut on the front of the mag to allow the bullet more room to exit when the slide picks it up.. IMHO, P-Mags are a lost cause. Save yourself some grief and get the Lancer-made .458 mags from Wilson. My non-modded Lancers work as well. YMMV 3) I've got a dot on mine right now, but I just got a Leupold "Pig-Plex" scope which seems a match made in heaven. Forget cheaper dots; the recoil'll do'em in. 4) Put your order in for Starline brass NOW. 5) It is a GREAT cartridge...the Wilson rounds are pricey but very accurate. When I was down with Billy Wilson working on his GUN GUY book, we talked a lot about the round...it's about the only thing he hunts with these days! Including on African game. Suppresses well, too.
Yeah, it'll bankrupt you, but they're not giving away .454 Casull rounds either. I just got a T&E of the CMMG ..458, and -- bless their hearts! -- they sent me a CASE of mixed ammo! There's a new pack of coyotes on the ranch...(cue funeral march)
