Competition is brutal on guns, making us all the unpaid R&D wing of the firearms industry. Almost 20 years of practical pistol and I now have an intimate knowledge of what can — and will — break, wear out of just plain come unstuck on a 1911. That's why I shoot Rugers in CAS. Would be a crime to chew up an old Colt!

I love you Mr. Axe! I hear wedding bells!!! Seriously guys, this is EXACTLY the discussion I needed and I appreciate it hugely..You'll be interested in knowing Hamilton agrees on a standard 6-shot .44 Blackhawk carrying all the weight of 5-shot (talking himself out of a nice fee, BTW). With the handgun, I think I'll be looking at the smaller antelopes (the buff gets the 450/400). Got a great letter off-forum from Gregory Santilli, who should CLEARLY be the one going to Africa...not moi!

Gentlemen; An Africa trip for September 2010 I thought was gone baby gone is back on the table. Basically, we'll be filming for a pretty unique special, going after buffalo in Mozambique with a Ruger #1 in 450/400 3-inch. As Mozambique allows handgun hunting, there's a sudden opportunity here. I've got a couple of .454s, but since this is a Ruger hunt I'd like to ride for the brand. Of course, Ruger would loan me a .454 Redhawk, but it would break my heart to do what may be my only African hunt and not shoot one of my beloved single actions. So, a golden excuse for a new gun! Let me tell you what I'm thinking first, and those of you more experienced than me please shoot holes in my idea. I'm thinking of a 5-shot .44 Magnum on a Super Blackhawk, either from Hamilton Bowen or Dave Clements. .44 because I shoot a lot of .44s and have more experience with the round than a .454. I'm thinking the heavy bullets in a .44 platform will come close to rivaling the .454. Obviously, the .475 is the trick pony, but I'm thinking the heavy .44 might prove more versatile for other projects in the long run. Am I way off base here? If so, why? Secondly, barrel length...my inclination would be a 6 1/2-inch. Thoughts? Thank you in advance! Best, Michael B Oh yeah, one further question...is a Bisley gripframe a must?

Was a great class and BIG FUN! You'll see it next season on SHOOTING GALLERY. We're thinking of an Advanced Single Action Self-Defense Class (2 SAs) early next year, and I'll try to line up some public slots, which if I can pull it off I'll announce here.

Don't post here often, but JT, my offer always stands. And I'll bring the whole dog and pony show to you, so you won't have to travel! Have a SHOOTING GALLERY coming up in 2010 on single action self-defense, which was a complete hoot...Sheriff Jim slipped in under the wire on that one! You'll want to watch because I use a Dave Clements full-custom 1956 vintage Flattop as my shooter in the show. I'm getting ready to start new push for the handgun hunting show, because I think I can cross it over to the bow hunters. Off the record, y'all, am on the verge of a new show very similar to the old TALES OF THE GUN...about 95% on that one.
Gunwise, I still shoot 2 50th Anniversary Blackhawks redone by Bill Laughridge at C&S in cowboy action shooting. I have a set of the Lipsey's .44 Specials redone by Long Hunter (Jim Finch) for CAS shooting, and I just bought a set of the Ruger SASS Vaqueros. On the custom front, I just sent an old beat-up .44 Mag Vaquero to Hamilton Bowen to build me a replica of those beautiful TLA "Border Specials" I keep seeing on this forum. I've rounded up a Ruger birdshead gripframe, and Hamilton has some Bisley hammers. BTW, I've asked Hamilton to be a regular "expert" on the new show.
Again, I'm not a regular poster here for a variety of reasons Lee is aware of. You can always reach me at mbane666@nedernet.net.
Best,
mb
