I shipped a handgun for the first time today. A gunshop in the town north of me charged me $30. They used an USPS flat rate box.

Thanks I am not sure if there are any affordable options left except to have your LGS ship it for you. Actually, my LGS gets it prepared to ship and then I drop the package and paperwork off at the local USPS. I always throw my guy a few extra bucks just for trouble.

He can ship it to the gunsmith directly if he wants using UPS or FedEx, then the gunsmith can ship it back to him directly. He can't use USPS unless he's an FFL. He has to tell the shipper it's a handgun and they will probably only ship it next day air as per their policy.
He can use an FFL but it will be shipped back to the FFL. If he wants to use the FFL he should ask him if he will charge him a transfer fee to pick up his own gun. Some will, some won't.

UPS will ask you for FFL information and over $100 to ship said pistol.

UPS and FedEx stores might refuse to ship it for you. I ran into this problem. They told me I had to go to the depot 70 miles away.

So all you guys getting gunsmithing, or custom work are paying that much? I guess you gotta make it worth it when you get something done.

The $ 30 I paid today seemed very reasonable. That included extra insurance.

David Clements charges $78 to ship a revolver back to you (Fed Ex next day). UPS quoted me like $108 when I told them it was a firearm for repair. In the end I paid about $28 with lots of insurance shipping it the way my FFL told me to.

A good ffl is definitely the way to go. The ffl closest to me said they would charge me something like $ 80 dollars. I asked why and they said they had to ship it ups or fedex because the post office wouldn't ship a handgun. I attempted to correct them and I was shot down.

I've shipped a lot of handguns and the best way in my opinion is to use an FFL and insure it for full value through USPS.

FFL is usually the cheaper route (usually)?... I'm still on the lookout for a better FFL to use for handguns. My main FFL I use for long guns is a good friend and very reasonably priced but, unfortunately he doesn't deal with handguns If you ship via UPS you have to go to a Distribution Center, NOT the little drop shops (here in NY state).... Last time I shipped out from UPS, I think it was about $55-$65. Either way it's Not cheap! Best of luck to'ya. BigBore44

I also recommend an FFL and the US Postal Service. The Priority Mail medium boxes ship for $15-20 so it is just a matter of how much insurance you want to add and what the FFL requires.

Just throwing out a thought. Is it legal first, to disassemble into two parts and ship as parts in separate packages ? Just a thought. Some 'Smith work may not require the whole gun, again, is this legal to be shipped without FFL if not a whole firearm ? I've never looked into it. Don't want to get you or me into hot water with Feds or USPS. I know I've had to find a certained rated box to ship ammo. Laws..well, we need some I know ! But.
