So I got my 45-70 BFR, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the gun. The trigger is super ( a little better than 2 pounds), the sights are very good and the overall fit and finish of the gun strikes me as quality.
Going to take it out tomorrow and start out with the loads I have on hand -- 405-gr "Trapdoor," Hornady Leverevolution 325-gr and maybe some a little hotter.
My question for you guys is that if I want to take the BFR beyond "range toy," maybe for hogs or exotics in Texas, which direction would you suggest I go in reloading? My general philosophy is heavy bullets at sane velocities, which is how I loaded for my J.D. Jones T/C years ago, which was a deer thumping machine. I didn't keep a record of those loads ( stupid me), but they were 350-400 gr softer lead than I'd choose to go to today.
Any favorites?
Thanks!

Glad to hear you like your new BFR! How big will the animals be that you might hunt? Hey will I see you in Atlanta, Michael?

You know, Max, I've really wanted a nice fallow deer for some obscure reason. When I was in NZ last year, it was on my list and I was tracking a really spectacular deer, but filming always takes precedent and I just ran out of time. When I was at FTW last fall I had planned on taking a big fallow after the whitetail hunt, but…surprise…the clock ran out again. At some point I'd like to take a bison for the meat…remind me to tell you about the cull bison hunt we filmed, which almost convinced me to NEVER film a hunting show again!
Yes, I'll be at NRA and look forward to sitting down and talking a bit! I'm thinking of launching a handgun hunting show online, and I'd like you to meet my Producer, John Carter. I think I can gin up a pretty good show, and I suspect I can lay my hands on enough seed money to launch. I firmly believe the Internet is our future and that's my focus for this year. I really want your input on this!
Text me at 303-810-4429 or leave a message with your number at the Outdoor Sportsman Group booth. I'll be signing at the booth 1-2PM on Friday and 9-10AM in Sunday.
Looking forward to seeing you, and congrats on a spectacular new book!
