I have a 1917 S&aw cut to a 2.5 inch snubby. The LGS took it in trade because he knows I'm a sucker for bulldogish guns. Somebody put a lot of money into...the barrel was re-roll markec with all the correct lettering dead centered and fitted with a custom front sight set for ball, the butt was rounded to modern S&W specs, it had a set of Bearpaw grips numbered to match the serial # of the gun. Super light trigger -- too light in fact. I had Jim Stroh set it up to run .45 ARs with heavy bullets. Has a perfect oarkerized finish, but I sure wish it was Los school S&w blue...or maybe nickel.
Damn fine packing gun!

Hey John...off topic, but I have some interesting .44s...THE LAST COWBOY single action, so named for the grips I picked up on eBay, built by Hamilton Bowen on a beat-up Vaquero, with custom Kirkpatrick leather; a DA S&W 629 6- inch built by Randy Lee of Apex Tactical that is the single best N-frame I've ever shot...5-6 pound DA pull, achieved with a titanium cylinder and Apex parts; cylinder cut for custom moon clips; crazy accurate with .44 special; packing pistol on the ranch these days is Ruger/Lipsey's 2.75-inch .44 Magnum RedHawk in full Hamilton Bowen trim, in custom Ted Blocker leather and sighted in with Garrett .310 Defenders in case I'm attacked by a garbage truck.
No on par with most of the guys on the list, but cool nonetheless. Besides, I'm the only one I bet who has a Desert Eagle in the fetching Weapons of Mass Destruction post-Apocalyptic finish!!!!
Thanks, John.

Thanks! Just got back from filming the Scout Rifle Forum at GUNSITE and will pick up my Frontier this week. Got the Leupold scope in as well and a bunch of .338 ammo and components. Excited!
Next year's safari is coming together as well...it's going to be great! Richard also talked me into bringing my BLR Scout .223 lever gun we can use for smaller game.
Of course Richard hauled out his Scout, a Melvin Forbes Ultra-Lite in .308 with custom forward scope mounts...6 pounds WITH scope!

One of my all-time favorite packing guns here at the Bunker is an old Super Backhawk with the barrel lopped off to 4 3/4 inch ( no, as a matter of fact, I can't remember why I picked that length) and fitted with an aluminium frame and colorado elk stag grips. Remember many long hikes with that gun in Kirkpatrick leather and my old beagle Alf at my side...sigh...

Sigh...I asked them to put a .44 on order for me...I looked long snd hard for one (a #3???) several years ago!to no avail. Decided not to let another one slip through my fingers.

Carlos had 3 completed versions at NRA. I'll drop him an email next week and see where the order process stands…

PS...I briefly tinkered with the idea of a .458 SOCOM bolt action Scout, but I put my head between my knees and breathed into a paper bag until the fit passed...

Yeah, the Colonel would go with a .350! Might even be a bigger pain than the .338 Fed! LOL!
I started on this soon to be expensive path not because of Africa, but because of ARs. On my last trip to Namibia on plains game, I used a .300 Win Mag Ruger Guide Gun and had no complaints. As you know, Ruger's not just a longtime sponsor, but longtime friends. I love their guns. It was noted on the Internet that while I was clearly a proponent of hunting with an AR, I didn't. I'd spent some time talking to my friends at Ruger about a .338 Federal, which would run on a SR762 platform. I knew DPMS and Armalite had made some and the seemed to be well received. Ended up in Berryville, Arkansas,, putting the finishing touches on Bill Wilson's book when he told me he was rolling out a .338 on his AR-10 platform. I have some experience with those guns in .308, and they are superb. Bill made me a deal I couldn't refuse, and I had a .338 AR that I'll hunt and film with this fall. So I got reloading dies, sourced a couple of hundred rounds of brass, bullets, powder...you guys know the drill. Just started working with that rifle with the VX-6 I used in Africa.
Then My friend Richard Mann, who is finishing up a new book on Scout rifles ( and is certifiably crazy to boot) tossed out the idea of a Scout rifle safari, primarily for big kudu and gemsbock. Richard kne I'd used a RGS in NZ on stag, so he figured I was a sucker. And into the rabbit hole I fell. I sorta felt the Win Mag was more boom than I needed, but that a .308 was light. .338 Federal looks just right, but I'll have a better sense this fall.
Good point on cartridge...why I chose the .300 Win Mag in the first place. I'll be documenting the project and will have the base rifle, along with my take-down BLR .223 Scout at the GUNSITE Scout Rifle Forum in a couple of weeks if any of you guys are going to be there.
I was never much on Scouts until I borrowed the Colonel's Steyr to do an Africa hunting simulation class at GUNSITE with Il Ling. Pretty much sold me on the spot.

...wth an eye on African plains game in 2017.
Ran across a really good deal on an old Ruger Frontier bolt-action ANIB in .338 Federal, a caliber I've always found fascinating (I have a Wilson Combat AR-10 .338 that'll be my field rifle this fall).
It already has a forward scope mount setup, and I have one of the new Leupold FireDot Scouts on the way. I'll probably add CDI bottom metal for AI mag (I got a bunch of them for my .308s) and a Timney trigger. Might havr to add a spacer to the stock. It will be a cool little gun, and I have visions of a decent gemsbok...

So, 9 months into rehab on destroyed right leg...3 weeks since replaced keft knee and went straight into rehab...I'm thinking that while everything hurts like living hell, I will motor through this. I read the little warning that with both knees replaced and not yet working 100%, there might be "minor balance issues." HA! I got the cast on my left wrist today. Minor balance issues my butt! The worst thing was the medical practitioner, whom I've worked with for more than a decade, made one final comment:
"You know those big guns you shoot, Michael? DON'T! At least not until the cast comes off.You can see ghost images of previous minor compression fractures. Wonder how you got those?"
I believe you called that one some years back, Mr. Taffin! LOL!
What the heck....maybe I'll mess around with the .327.

Got one but I havent shot it (am in my 9th month of rehab for destroying my right leg...getting old isn't for sissies, and DO NOT fall knee first on a rock while holding a case of .44 Magnums. truse me on this). I've shot the heck out of the .44 Special version, and I pray that when it 's time for my last cylinder-ful to be firedl, it'll be through my Hamilton Bowen ""Last Cowboy" .44 Magnum birdshead full house custom. And don't even ask...it's pledged to the Cody Museum. I was thinking of doing a show on my .44s...think there'd be some interest? Michael B

My old pal Carlos Martinez is now in charge of the Rem/Marlin custom shop. Carlos is one of the good guys. At NRA He showed me some hi-zoot tactical rifles, them -- be still my beating heart -- custom 45/70 Guide Guns. Not in full production yet, but I nearly throttled Carlos ordering on on the spot. He laughed and told me I was already on the list.
I can't wait!
I'm building a .338 Scout ouf of a Ruger Frontier and hopefully some different bottom metal. There's a Tennessee boar and a Texas whitetail with my name on them. Figured that'd do the trick.
The custom Marlin goes to Africa next year, unless OUTDOOR CHANNEL gets fed up with me being right a lot more than I'm wrong...LOL'

Had a WONDERFUL day down with Jason, Lori and the guys from Lipsey's a few weeks ago. The conversations were wide-ranging, but you guys know where I'm coming from. BTW, both lunch and dinner were BEYOND good! All Cajun all the time!
Gonna try & do a Lipsey's edition of SHOOTING GALLERY ( Season 17!!!! Most successful shooting show ever, by longevity, ratings & sponsorship!).
