What load was that, looked like fine shooting at a fair bit of distance. I do wish I had a place that I could leave steel targets set up at so I could shoot a few rounds when the mood strikes. Shooting a couple cylinders here and there will make for a far better shooter than shooting a bunch of ammo when you occasionally get the chance.

Ashley Emerson of Garrett Cartridges brought out a 405gr 45 colt Load for RedHawks that runs 1250fps from a 4” barrel. I can’t imagine (or don’t want to) what gain you would really get from a 454 cylinder in that gun.
YMMV

I remember a long time back reading Outdoor Life I believe where a man was out picking berries. He had a S&W 22LR revolver with him. Along came a black bear so the man went up a tree and out on a long branch. It was high enough the bear couldn't jump and reach him. At any rate the man shot the bear with the revolver and he went off a few feet and fell down. The man was so convinced that he thought surely he couldn't have killed the bear with one shot from a 22LR so he stayed on that branch for 3 hours before he started to think the bear was indeed dead, then came down out of the tree. In fact the bear was dead. I know many a small town meat packer who would kill 2000lb steers with a 22lr pistol. Just have to know the right place to place your bullets.

Id say a couple of things probably occurred that saved this guy 1: the bear was not committed to attacking him, she was sorting out what he was probably and was dissuaded by the throbbing headache the 38sp gave her because she again wasn't committed to killing him. I think she probably was investigating what he was in defense of her cubs, was he a danger? Was he a potential easy meal? Who knows? 2: He had some brass balls and was very fortunate, the soft lead rounds of the day didnt penetrate the skull, had she wanted to kill him by all logic she would have. When Phil Shoemaker killed that griz with the 9mm a few years back it was with best quality hard cast loads and +P+ power levels and he shot the bear repeatedly till the threat stopped, 6 shots in the chest in less than 2 seconds. Certainly accounting for the different outcome of the 2 similar power level rounds.
Times were different and men were tougher, imagine a 35 day pack trip with today ultra light food and equipment compared to the heavy assed stuff of their day? You just dealt with a lot less stuff like a sleeping pad, maybe rain gear or tent. There sure as heck wasn't a rescue beacon hanging on your pack that could summon help if something went sideways, you broke a leg you were going to be in a world of hurt just to survive getting out, if you could get out. Guys went into the wilderness never to return with some regularity back then, I'm sure bear stories like this happened without the happy ending for anyone involved more often than we really know. Just the guy went hunting and never returned. I don't know how I would measure up to those outdoorsmen of the day, I know Id like to think I could but damn I'm not sure I would deal with the misery they must have endured daily, but then they also didnt know any difference either. Go read Elmer Keith's Canadian hunts in "Hell I was there"...

I have had issues with new brass galling in my sizer die, leaving little hard brass balls in the sizer that I then had to polish out of the sizer (Dillon has graciously replaced a couple of the sizers for me when the galled). Dillon suggested running new brass in a tumbler with dirty corn cobb/walnut shell media, the media acts as a lubricant for the brass that seems to prevent galling. Seems a bit of Hornady One shot might be easier but I haven't run any virgin brass through that press since the discussion so I cant report back on the effectiveness of his fix.
One of these days I will find out though.

Kinda looks like Reeder's vapor honed finish. But if it was Reeders it would have laser engraved nakid ladies all over it. Interesting gun none the less

I didn't know him unfortunately, but it doesn't seem like a year. I have read some of his articles and drooled over some of his guns of course. I wish I'd had the chance (and money) to make his acquaintance. You didn’t need money to get to know the man. Just have a honest interest in our sport, ask honest questions and he would offer all the time you could want. He knew I never had a pot to piss in but always made time to yak guns with me. I can still hear his voice in my head and it’s probably been 2 2 1/2 years since we spoke. There is a hole in the handgun world that won’t be filled again.

I have a Proxibid account but I vehemently refuse to pay 23%-25% online premium, packing charges, etc. I will say though that lately I've seen a couple of auction house with more reasonable fees in the 15% range. I agree, except that doing math on the fly you can still sometimes end up with a fair deal on there. In the end I only care what the check has to be written for, how we got there isn't really relevant, even though it is part of the deception they work on, how a cheap $400 turns into a $550 check when it is all said and done. But if the $550 check is for a $800 gun? Well I can get over the dance to get there, it doesn't often work but sometimes...

When I am in the backcountry I still like to carry single action, not always sometimes I carry autos or double actions but single actions just seem right.
Typically it will be a 45 colt loaded with a 270-SAA bullet over 9.5gr of Power Pistol or a 44sp with a 255gr Keith over 8.2gr of Power Pistol.
In summer where the odds of finding ground squirrels and other vermin is high a 327 fed has gotten the nod often with a 135gr LBT bullet at 1350fps or a 100gr Hollow point at a similar velo for fun.
But what floats my boat the next trip might be different so we will have to see what happens then...

Just freaking spectacular grips. I’d love to feel them in my hand and see how they fit my mitts.

That’s a right proper BBQ gun now. It would be fun to try and wear that one out for the rest of your life.

I’ll talk to our booking agent today, but it appears all spots are filled, and possible a couple extras waiting to see if anyone drops out. So that means 2 full camps for this 2925 hunt. What’s funny, is the 2022 HHI Africa hunt was almost not a thing as only 3 people signed up. I believe the great success and photos from that hunt fueled this hunt. Great to hear because I promise bookings overall are down with peoples belts being significantly tightened these days with the down economy. Seems like a great valued hunt with good people...

If you're asking about the load, it was 9.5 gr. of Power Pistol and a 288 gr. cast SWC from a MP 45-270SAA mold. Very nice. I have a few OM mid frame rugers i am intending projects with. I have gone back and forth on the 45c on the mid frame. If i could get a 260gr to 1050-1100fps, id be happy there. It seems you are getting it done with no problems in that neighborhood. You can get to that power level in a midframe Ruger, at least a Pearce has listed several loads through the years that will get there in those guns.
