This is times 2 because my wife and I hunt together. Although I have I don't regret the expense I do think of what else I would have bought. Hopefully I can start a thread like Rey's.

Lately, it does seem like it's turning more and more into "The Sport of Kings and Noblemen" when you add it all up, doesn't it?

Definitely not cheap. We've had a few new elk hunters join us in the past. I know what we spent to get started. Going with a guide, license, tips, equipment, etc and you'll be $15-20k especially if you tag out (meat processing and mount). It gets a little less expensive if you stop buying other stuff.

How long till you qualify as residents up there? Probably will be another 2 years. Can't wait until it'll be the "residence" for their purposes.

You guys can fly to Africa, go on a 2 week safari ( lots of critters) for less than a guided elk hunt, then take your horses out once you get residence tags

Wow...I can't imagine spending that much on a hunting license. I hope it is all very much worth it to you sir, and you bag everything you are going for!

Believe me, it would make me shake my head when I was paying 1/10 of this for license in North Carolina and even less than that in Maryland back in the day. But for this kind of hunting that I'm doing it's a buy wants cry once proposition. I would not pay this kind of money to hunt North Carolina or Maryland but in the West it's a different story for me. I'm definitely looking forward to the day those rates will be lower when I'm a in-state resident.

Hunting in multiple states in the west each year including my state of Wyoming….I hear you.
But nothing is even close to hunting the wilderness. Money is just a small speed bump in the way.

That's where I hunt. Wilderness area. Worth the price of admission.

A non-res sheep tag here in AK is less than that! Would be required to hire a guide as a non-res though.
