For those of you who are either full time or part time carrying SAs for two or four legged defence, was wondering what load, factory or handload, you have.. caliber, bullet, velocity...
Thanks...Bob

When I am in the backcountry I still like to carry single action, not always sometimes I carry autos or double actions but single actions just seem right.
Typically it will be a 45 colt loaded with a 270-SAA bullet over 9.5gr of Power Pistol or a 44sp with a 255gr Keith over 8.2gr of Power Pistol.
In summer where the odds of finding ground squirrels and other vermin is high a 327 fed has gotten the nod often with a 135gr LBT bullet at 1350fps or a 100gr Hollow point at a similar velo for fun.
But what floats my boat the next trip might be different so we will have to see what happens then...

Woods bumming I carry 45 colt with a 300gr LFN bullet over 22Gr H110 in a blackhawk, the load is definitely "Ruger Only". Should take care of anything that needs to be taken care of.

General work around the place gun is my Service Six 4" with RCBS 38-150Kt on 4227 in 38sp brass. During deer season it gets the 358429 on H110. They are tailored to the same impact at 40yds.
Daily at work or in town is the same 150kt load in a m36. Heavy for a J, but cheaper to replace a gun than not bringing enough.
If I know a larger bear is on the property, I will lug around the Redhawk 475L or 500L BFR for checking bait or roaming around.
At all times there's an FA mini 22mag somewhere. My truck gun is a 4-3/4" SBH paired with a Deerfield carbine. A Bond 45acp derringer is often at hand as well.

I DO NOT CARRY A SA REVOLVER IN URBAN SETTINGS, EVERYWHERE ELSE 90% OR MORE OF THE TIME I CARRY A SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER, USUALLY A 5.5" CUSTOM OR SEMI-CUSTOM RUGER BISLEY, AND 90% OR MORE OF THE TIME I AM CARRYING A 45 COLT WITH RUGER ONLY LOADS (1,244fps WITH A 250gr RNFP AND 1,241fps WITH A 320gr RNFP). WHEN YOU ARE A 45 COLT MAN CALIBER CHOICES ARE EASY.

FA97 45 Colt 5 1/2" Round Butt loaded with Hardened Matt's Wadcutters (250 grn) for 4 Legged. I've yet to find a bullet that smacks with more authority.
For Urban Carry (2 Legged), it's an inexpensive, reliable semi-auto. If you ever have to use it, it'll definitely be confiscated and never seen again. Especially true if it's a nice gun...

When I carry a 44 Magnum which are both double action I use the buffalo bore mono metal bullets. They are very accurate but also have flash suppressant powder. For the 45 Colt and 500L those are Bisleys and it's typically an LBT style bullet. I don't load the 45 or the 500 full throttle because in my mind I'm going to let the size and weight do the work and if there is a need for a second shot it will be more plausible. Full tilt 450gr with H110 is a lot to recover from for a quick follow-up shot.

The old black powder 45 Colt would put a horse down easily. Why would you load bullets, especially hard ones and heavy, as they pass through the person you're hoping to stop and injure innocent bystander? I'd want a bullet that is going to expand, then even most heavy expanding bullets are going to pass through the person.

No bears where I roam, and at my age I don’t do much roaming, so I normally carry a 9mm, but if I’m feeling it, a 10mm. Both are S&W M&P platforms. There is always a Remington 870 with rifle sights and rifled barrel under the back seat of my truck, loaded with slugs.

.45 Colt with 280 gr 45-270-SAA bullets (from Matt's) over 13.0 grs HS-6. Never chronographed it but I'd estimate about 1,050 fps out of a 4 5/8" barrel.
