"are they worth it?"
always a subjective sort of thing for any grip(s), isn't it?
do they fit your hand/help you control the firearm - if yes, you are a "go" at this station..
otherwise...

i had the pleasure of talking with John Linebaugh several times.
As i work with the SRP guys, he was always keen to talk pressures for things like the 25mm and 120mm rounds - and one day - we even talked 14 (british) and 16 inch (iowa class) guns!
a lot of "observable common sense" was lost when he left us...

bb5 is on the money ref blackies in n carolina - gothunts.com/north-carolina-record-black-bear-confirmed/i used to spend a good deal of time on the at when i was a kid in college and saw more black bears than i cared to, back then i toted a 4 1/2" blackhawk in 45colt (although for the sheldon cooper types, nowdays it's called 4.62") . no "close calls" which is fine by me. these days the appalachian trail groups - conservancy and parks folks are loathe to mention black bear "encounters" needless to say when walking with the grandkids on the trail these days, i feel comfortable with my little s&w 69 on my hip - and yes, i practice draw/point/shoot at my indoor range - while the wife holds the button down on the target coming at me from 15 yards...

a dinner of slow-simmered pinto beans with ham and "side meat," accompanied by real iron skillet cornbread is best shared with pals and followed by a good cigar with a snifter of brandy..
i can almost see how my weekend is going to develop..

"will a 500 JRH with a 400 grain monolithic solid (aka Cutting Edge or Lehigh flatness copper bullet) at approx 1400-1450 fps be able to penetrate enough for frontal as opposed to side head shots on elephant?"
..until it's actually been done - everything is pure speculation.
when you get back from your safari, you will be the sme (subject matter expert) and can at that time tell us definitively yes or no.
be sure to take pictures!
