have a bird's head conversion on a 4.5" stainless blackhawk done by hamilton bowen. grips are checkered walnut by eagle.
nice little piece - i wanted compact and manageable..
my standard load is a 275 hunter's supply (model #45) on top of 9.5gr unique - they extract on their own, no pressure signs.
as stated - manageable, but maybe getting to the edge of the envelope.
mind you, i have "boomers," just not this compact and with a birdshead grip.

hoss,
did you mention: - the caliber - generation?
here's why: - in 7.62x39, ruger has made them in both 308 AND 311 - in 556/223 they have had different twist rates - almost as a rule, current gen mini/ranch units can be tuned to shoot 1.5" @ 100yd w/o much dificulty - my wife's shoots better than that routinely.

if you use a little card stock and some vise-grips..
be sure NOT to tell anyone when you do!
this is the part where the devoted fall to the ground, shaking and twitching...

roger, understand.
reference "reservations to having a Winchester Big Bore cartridge chambered in a std Marlin" i can see where you're coming from as the 375 win was designed to operate at MUCH higher pressures than the 30-30 or 38-55.
with that said, the marlin 336 has been factory chambered in 375 win and a note aside - the 450 marlin which is a pretty stout number as well.
is this just observational commentary or is there a chance in buying one of these pieces?
i ask because i'm one of those "not quite manly" types that unless i know the smith that did the work, well, i'm always willing to let the other guy shoot his toy - as long as i'm standing behind him a step or two ...

fwiw, i've been using a mix of molds, dies, presses, over the years as well.
my practice molds, for grins and giggles, i use two sets each - 6 CAVITY TL358-148WC and 6 CAV H&G 68 200 SWC for practice loads (lyman #2 alloy) over modest charges of w231 in each.
haven't had any problems yet, i've only used them for a few years, so we'll see how they hold up..
actually tried a lee (MOLD DC 515-500F) in 50 cal for my shiloh sharps 50-90 (cast in 20-1) with a custom lee push through .512 sizer - those are pan lubed and work pretty darn good!
the bench has lee, rcbs presses as well as an rcbs lube/size for the "hard" stuff.
molds have been pretty much from most all.
my experience with the one broken lee piece i had was quick and courteous.
broke a de-capping pin on an rcbs - same type of service!
i had a hornady die set in 45 colt once that was visibly not centered - called 'em sent them back and they sent me a new set w/note say basically "sorry" - nice folks.
actually, guess most of my exchanges have been that way with most of the folks i've spoken with, lee, rcbs, lyman, lbt, the whole bunch.
i don't shoot as much as i like and probably only reload 2-3 thou rounds annually.
one day i'll retire and change all that.....

aggie01,
not wanting to sound timid - i'm not inclined to heat a barrel - is this base configurable for mounting in the same manner as the stroh unit - "drill and tap?"
thanks!

358156hp - i'm a new guy, so, this is also an intro of sorts.
saw your thread and was a bit confused - "heavy caliber Marlins used a dual lug lockup system."
scratched my head and before i went to work this morning - took out a couple of my marlin 95's (both 45-70) - one, a piece i bought in '86, the other a guide gun i bought in '10.
did a quick strip and looked at the bolts and locking blocks - same.
now then, with regards to the 375 win - have one in the "big bore 94" configuration that i bought back in '81.
it shoots harder on me than my "warm" 45-70 loads do in my marlins - the marlins both wearing deceraltor pads and i suspect, because that little 94 (completely stock configuration) is pretty darn light!
does this help or am i missing something?
