A very dear friend and I decided to read 1 John once every day this month and meet at his place once a week for dinner and discussion. This week he made pinto beans (with some ham in the mix) and cornbread. I grew up in a very large, and very poor family in West Texas, and we had beans and cornbread about once a week growing up. It has always been one of my favorite meals. My wife really hates beans (and my gastrointestinal reaction to them), so beans haven’t been on my menu much for many years. However, when I get a chance, I really enjoy them. Even more enjoyable, was time spent with a good friend, and contemplating the finer points of salvation. We had a great time, and observed that all you really need to get by in this world is to rely on God, stick close to friends and family, and have some beans and cornbread every now and then.

About six weeks ago my wife and I took a pot of pinto beans and ham, and a hot cast iron skillet of cornbread over to Ginnie's house and sat and ate with her. Ginnie went home to be with the Lord about a month later. It truly is a special meal, thank you for posting.

Fried cabbage with sausage, beans and cornbread, boiled sausage and cabbage in tomato sauce are some of the meals I grew up eating. The poorer meals the better in my opinion. I like a steak, but I LOVE Lima Beans boiled with a ham hock. I can eat that for two days straight. My wife doesn't like me eating beans much either.

We were having dinner with a friend last night and we started talking about the cracklin corn bread my granddad used to make. So good.

a dinner of slow-simmered pinto beans with ham and "side meat," accompanied by real iron skillet cornbread is best shared with pals and followed by a good cigar with a snifter of brandy..
i can almost see how my weekend is going to develop..

Single Action,
Are you planning to read a different book each day in February? And how did y'all decide on 1 John for January?

I am presently involved with two churches, doing pulpit supply once or twice a month at each. In one church I am preaching through 1 John. Its a great letter. I'll have to get my wife to fix pinto beans and cornbread. When reading and eating, I'll think of you two. God bless, rugershooter

Single Action, Are you planning to read a different book each day in February? And how did y'all decide on 1 John for January? My friend suggested first John because he had not studied it much (neither had I), and it has a lot of heavy things to say about salvation, among other things. We really enjoyed it. We are going to look at 2nd and third John next week, since they are so short. Maybe go into James for a couple weeks after that.
