Anyone used one? I have one coming tomorrow for my Uberti 1858 New Model Army smokepole, 45 Colt. I am told it's a simple drop in device. Anyone have any tips/tricks/warnings? Thank you for your replies. Mandatory pic of hogleg.

Hey Armoredman, I think Howell makes a nice product but I wouldn't push it harder than tier 1 loads. The main reason is the support the rear cap has for the case. It basically has the same footprint as the bp cyl instead of the full support a full sized conversion ring/plate would give. Nice looking revolver.

I was planning on doing cowboy style loads or black powder loads, to be honest. I have strong revolvers for hotter loads - this is just for fun. Thank you for your reply.

I think that you will like it. I have one and my biggest concern was the slow twist 1:30" barrel not stabilizing a 250 grain 45. I was pleasantly surprised with my revolver producing 2" groups or less with the Lyman 454190 at 18 yards. I like the idea behind the conversion cylinder and enjoy shooting it, but I see it as a "play pretty". It's a lot of fun, but I would not want it to be my primary 45 revolver.

Well, there's the Howell cylinder that requires barrel removal to load / unload or Kirst Konversions gated conversion which loads / unloads conventionally. Personally, I'd go with the Kirst.

I like the Kirst too, BUT it's very expensive. Also on the Kirst on the Colt style revolvers you have to grind part of the right side recoil shield away, the part right there where you put the caps on the nipples, in order to get the cartridges in and out. It also includes a loading gate. One more thing Kirst makes an ejection rod and housing to go on the Colts. It's a pretty cool setup, but like I said expensive. Thus the reason I'm not springing for one.

I've been wanting one for my Pietta 1858 New Army and my stainless Ruger Old Army.

I looked up the Kirst Konverter system - NIFTY! But to have one put on my 1860 would be just under $500, and I can get a new Taurus Deputy in 45 Colt for about the same price. I still might do it some time down the road - I don't like the conversion cylinder for an open top revolver as you have to disassemble the revolver to reload. I got my Howell this morning, and after I figured out the trick of getting it IN the gun, it locks up tight like a bank vault, very nice. Looking forward to loading some tester rounds this weekend. After the blowback I got asking about BP cartridges, I'll probably stick with Cowboy loaded smokeless loads. As was said, this is NOT going to be my carry, home defense, or pretty much ANY defense revolver unless I am defending my life from Black Bart at the range. If this becomes a carry gun, life has gone ALL the way off the rails...

I guess I'm really lazy. I bought the 1872 Open top in 44 Colt. After some judicious work on the hammer nose rear sight and front sight the thing is surprisingly accurate.

I bought a Pietta 1860 Colt last year and after a little tweaking on it it shoots six shots in a 1 inch hole at 30 yards consistently. I'm impressed with it. True to the sights too!

I have Goex 3F and Olde Eynsford 3F as well as home made 3F and 2F - have a new jug of 2F made with toilet paper, should be interesting. Only "substitute" I have is Pyrodex "R" that I bought when everyone was out of everything, have never even cracked open the bottle.

In my opinion 2F is kind of coarse for cartridges, can't get as much in it. Get rid of the Pyrodex!

The Pyrodex is for the rifle in case of extreme emergency, otherwise I would have probably given it away! I was planning on using the 3F for cartridges whenever I get a drop tube and correct lube. I will start with smokeless loads first, as it's what I am set up to do right away, and now other things have happened that just sharply limited my discretionary income.
