wednesday afternoon i went to my stand #2 to hunt deer for a couple hours. a stand is a double tree stand without the ladder, i'm disabled. and its 50 or so yards from my trail, which my polaris utv takes me on. anyway, it takes me about 10 minutes or so to go 50 yards to my stand. i get there and settle myself in. then it began to snow....alot. 30 minutes later the sun came out. 15 minutes later, it snowed. 10 minutes it was sunny.......this goes on until wee hours thursday morning. meanwhile i am just sitting and seeing and listening.....and my mind wonders off. i look at my phone and i see it is about 4pm. so i get myself a cup of coffee....if you think that 50 yards is bad, then a one armed man, trying to get a thermos cup off and pouring it is worse!!!! lol!!! then to top it all off, my glove HAS to go in the cup of coffee. i took the wet glove off while i was shaking my head. a coffee flavored glove!!! lol!!!
while i was sipping my coffee, a deer showed up(at 55 yards). i put the cup down and i slowly picked up my rifle(tc encore/23"MGM barrel in 444 marlin). i noticed that the deer had antlers and found out that it was a spike. in PA only junior hunters and disabled people are allowed to shoot them. senior hunters are not allowed. i've seen the spike on archery season, but i'm looking for the ONE. its about 2 or 3 years old, 6 or 7" spikes and he is a fat one!!! my freezer is looking empty, so...........i might as well shoot him. i thumbed back the hammer, put my crosshairs right behind his shoulder(he was broadside) and squuueeezzzed the trigger. then a 300gr fn gc with 24.0gr of 2400/dacron is out the barrel and into behind the buck's shoulder, breaks a rib, thru both lungs and goes out thru 2 ribs. then the spike ran about 20-25 yards, did a circle and fell over. i then picked up my phone and found that it was 4:10pm. i called up my neighbor and asked him if i wanted to help to drag the deer down to my utv. 10 minutes later he not only dragged the deer but he gutted it too. this morning(thursday) i was able to take it to my butcher. i don't have any pictures of the spike, its just a spike.

i gave my youngest son a rem m7(older one with 18.5" barrel) in 7-08. i "customized" the trigger(timney) and i loaded up some 139gr hornady fn discontinued(can't remember imr 4350 or 4320_) that goes 2600fps. he was at the time, 5' and 100lbs and it never "kicked". i have the same gun and caliber and load, it never "kicked" me. as a matter of fact, i can see the bullet impact on deer.
or you can go the cz527 in 7.62x39. i am going to get this one in the fall. it will be my deer hunting rifle when i get older.

Finally got to shoot my 500 linebaugh test loads with us 6 today. I ladders up from 12.5 to 16 grains. My encore really liked the 15 grains. But my question is when shooting big hard cast with all that lube is it suppose to smoke like a muzzle loader. I also loaded some 480 ruger from 12 to 15 grains with jacketed 325 xtp and it didn't smoke at all. But the 500 with the 450 grain Keith bullet from Montana cast with hs6 smoked like a freight train. is that normal. lol 500L tc encore/ 23″ MGM heavy factory barrel 450gr lfn gc made from MBW 16.5gr of hs-6 1237fps avg of 5 shots 8.02 std dev i started at 16.0gr of hs-6 and went up to 16.5gr. i planned on doing 16.7 and 17.0gr of hs-6 but i'm more than happy with 16.5 gr. it goes 1 1/4 - 1 5/8" at 100 yards(5 shots, bench). i never seen smoke. after you fired, did you find soot on the cases? if so, up your grain of powder. i didn't find smoke or soot when i first started my ladder. i did find soot and little bit of smoke on my 444 marlin(tc encore/23"MGM barrel). it was at 22.0 - 23.0gr of 2400/dacron under a 300gr fn gc. when i went to 23.5gr the soot and smoke went away.

i'll pass on a labradar. i'm fine with the caldwell's. if i shoot it AGAIN, then the "magik boolit" says "NO FPS FER YOU" . and i don't argue with the "magik boolit". i still have use the chrony in my 30-40 krag(165gr ranch dog), 45-70(405gr fbfn) and the 20 vartarg(34gr midway hp). they are all good powder-wise, i just want to find the fps. i'm more of a coldtriggerfinger guy, i like moderate loads and moderate velocity.

today i got around to chrony two loads.....
500L tc encore/ 23" MGM heavy factory barrel 450gr lfn gc made from MBW 16.5gr of hs-6 1237fps avg of 5 shots 8.02 std dev
444 marlin tc encore/ 23" MGM heavy factory barrel 300gr fn gc (saeco/ 12+/-bhn/ Bullshop) 24.0gr of 2400/dacron 1625fps avg of 5 shots 9.11 std dev
the 444 was about right on with my guesstimate(1600fps), while the 500L guesstimate(1300+fps) was a little off. the 500L goes around 1 1/2 - 2" at 100 yards(5shots/bench). the 444 marlin goes around 3/4 - 1" at 100 yards(5 shots/bench). all rifles are dead on at 100 yards. its only to do 50 yards and less shot at a deer/black bear.
i haven't chroyed a load for years. about 12 years ago, i shot my last chronograph thru the screen. so i decided i didn't need it. since i've been doing cast boolits, i figure what the h-e-double hockey sticks, so i bought a caldwell ballistic precision chrony.

My 2 complaints about the CZ 527 are that the magazine is right in front of the triggerguard, at the balance point for carrying with one hand, and that the open sights that come on the rifle are rudimentary at best. To me, it fit the role of powerful enough to hunt caribou while being a handy lightweight rifle. Adding a scope would take away from its good small rifle qualities. I think it would be closer to ideal if it came with a good peep sight. www.newenglandcustomgun.com/Gun_Services/item_info.asp?Brand_id=5933www.skinnersights.com/cz_rifles_24.htmlheres a couple i like peep sights. i have a 1898 springfield armory(bubbasized) in 30-40 krag that i put on a redfield 102k peep sight. my best group is 3/4" at 100 yards(5 shots/benched). i average about 1 1/2"+/- at 100 yards. it used to 2 1/2"+ at 100 yardswith open sights. it luvs the 165gr ranch dog(173gr actual) and 25.5 of h4198. my son and i have killed deer out to 173 yards. most of them are killed at 50 yards and less.

0late this summer or early fall i'm going to a cz 527 in 7.62x39. singleactions.proboards.com/thread/23607/7-62x39-ruger-mini-30 it will, someday, be my close cover deer rifle, when i can no longer use big bores. i have shot the new and old 6.5's, 7mm's, 30 cal... galore. the 7.62x39 i just plain forgot about it. maybe it was because of my army days. i was a op-4 for a few months and i was completely in awe of the cartridge. more so than the ak-74 in 5.45x39. i could shoot the -47 about 350 meters(about 380ish yards)consistently at a man sized torso target(prone and sitting) using open sights. or the 7.62x39 was an "assault rifle" not a hunting gun. was i wrong on that one!!! you gotta hand it to the russians, they came up with a suitable cartridge for deer and man. (suitable to me means a cartridge that goes roughly 350-400 yards and impacts a man's chest/stomach.) the cheap steel 122-125gr fmj, sp, hp factory loads are so-so accuracy wise. you can find that wolf fmj is more accurate than tula hp. and vice versa. i am planning on handloading my cartridges. i will take a bullshop .313" 165gr rn gc(11 or 12bhn) and rel7 or h322 with starline brass. i'm only going to use rifle about 150 yards, 50 yards and under is more to my liking, but not to the deer's liking . steel cases have berdan primers which "can" be reloaded, but i would not reload these. www.gunsholstersandgear.com/2013/02/14/reloading-steel-cases-reload-steel-case-ammoif the cases are brass and boxer primed, have at her!!!!

I had a pre ban mini 30, a cz527 carbine, and an AR. All 3 7.62x39mm were great, light and short carbine for woods hunting. The CZ was my favorite but now matter what powder and bullets ,308, 310, 311 diameter, it would not shoot consistent enough groups. In a cz action you can get the most performance bc most data is centered around semi autos, but most are compressed loads. If I used 122gr fmj or hp wolf ammo the gun literally put 3 shots in one single hole!!!. But with other factory ammo and all my handloads I tried it wouldnt shoot, my mini 30 was decent but load! The AR I built was the most accurate I. Last loaf I made used .308 125 nosler bt. i've been thinking about the cz and i have decided to go for it. i will take a 150some grain cast boolit and make it my close cover deer rifle.

the only revolver i have is the ruger sbh with a 4 5/8" barrel in 44 mag. i use 280gr wfn and a snootful of unique. just recently i am loading 255gr keith over unique(skeeter load) in 44 special. i find the 44 spl load is the one that i go to.

late this summer, i plan to buy a new ruger mini 30(wood stock) in 7.62x39. when it comes time i can't shoot my big bores, it will be my close-in(100 yards and less) deer gun. now i don't want the mini 30 to be an "ammo dump". i'll reload everything, cast or jacketed bullets, never a fmj, i don't like them. i think i'll buy a 150gr sst and/or a 150+gr fn gc cast boolit. it will be scoped with a 2-7x or 3-9x leupold. i'm planning on going 2 - 3" at 100 yards, 3 - 5 shots.
what do you all think?
i don't like the ar's and ak's and the sks. i've shot them(US Army) and to be frank, they aren't a hunting rifle. i know most of you like the ar, ak and sks and you use them well. thats good, but in my mind, they aren't.

my jug of 2400(8 lbs) has run out. but don't worry, i have another 8lb jug!!! unfortunately its a different lot . fortunately, i shot the 444 marlin and IT decided that the 300gr saeco fn is better with 24.0gr of 2400(tuft of dacron). the other now empty jug, said 25.0gr of 2400(tuft of dacron) is the way to go. always check your lots of powder, a 1gr of powder can make you inaccurate.

i used to own a 6.5cm in tc encore 16 1/4" MGM heavy factory barrel. it shot under 1" with many handloads. the 120gr nosler bt with a charge of superformance killed many deer for me. i gave her up and bought a husky m46 in 9.3x57.
