yeah i really hate the ruger #1 (1973) in 270 win
and i despise the 130gr nosler bt with 47.0gr of imr 4320
(left side, 100 yards)
and i loathe the 140gr hornady sst with 52.0gr of imr 4350
its not that i take the ruger #1 out hunting.......

i have a 1898 spr armory(bubbasized) in 30-40 krag. it just luvs 165gr ranch dogs with h4198 going 1930fps. that combo has killed 12-13 deer with one shot. my great grandfather got the krag and she is passed down generations. my pap, dad, late uncle, me and someday it will be my son's.
grafs is the place to go for the krag.

i was given an old mauser redfield aperture sight and screws for free. it was mounted on a 98 mauser that needed scoped. i tried to pay for it, but he kept saying no. a dayton traister 93 mauser speed lock and trigger kit is on its way. if it goes well, then i'll order a 98 mauser trigger kit as well. next will be a huber concepts trigger in my 91 argentine. i like the boyd's stock but.......... i kinda like it same way it was bought fer.

i have a 91 argentine mauser(well, its on the way) and a 93 spanish mauser(1922 or 23) that was bubba-ed up(so bad ). i have a couple or several questions about them. 1. i like aperture sights (lyman, redfield, williams), esp vintage sights. is it possible to do a aperture on a 91 mauser? if it is, what kind? 2. what after market trigger(timney, jewell...) does a 91 argentine mauser fit on? 3. what after market trigger(timney, jewell...) does a 93 spanish mauser fit on? thanks for your time and effort!!!

Like mart, I was able to converse with Mr. Petrov before his death although not in person as it seems mart did,........lucky guy. I’ve wanted a 400 Whelen since I was in high school, but the issues that were had with people not knowing what the true dimensions kept me from going thru with it. You know all these “eggspurts” spouting drivel and yet they didn’t KNOW what they didn’t KNOW. After researching off an on for several years, and looking at the Brown 400 Whelen, and some of the stuff JD Jones was doing with his improved 30-06 based singleshot rounds. I started looking into it some more, and came across Michael Petrov’s article, I hunted him down and emailed him and was very happy to hear WHY, the issues were occurring. It was very simple, but by that time I’d already owned several large caliber rounds that would do what the 400 would do, so why go thru the trouble of duplicating what I already had. That’s where I am today,.........I already own338-06, 9.3x62, 9.3x64, 45-70, 50 Alaskan, and 348 win. But that damn 400 still sits in the corner of my brain waiting for its chance,......someday maybe, someday!!!! Trapr i was going to take to 375 whelen but as i was discussing it on another site, someone said the 400 whelen. hmmmmm.......the 400 whelen, i was going to do that a few years ago, but "eggspurts"(i love that!!!) told me NOT to do it. so i reached the 400 whelen and i found the "original" 400 whelen( aka Mr. Petrov). i am still researching it. next year i hope to build it. i have the 35/30, 9.3x57, 444 marlin, 45-70 and the 500 linebaugh(tc encore/23" MGM barrel) and i'm wonder why too!!!!

Keep us posted on the build. H4895 is your friend when it comes to powder and CH4D has excellent dies for it though you may have a bit of a wait. I've loaded a lot of 400 Whelen with a 41 mag sizing die and used a 458 Winchester bullet seating die. I have CH4D dies now but before they came I did all my initial load development with the 41mag/458 dies. Mart what ch4d dies do you use? they have 5 different dies(whelen, 24, 28, 30 & 40 improved). or do they have customized the 400 whelen dies?

i have a sporterized 98 mauser in 8x57 and next year i'm either going to rebore or rebarrel to the 400 whelen. (read web.archive.org/web/20101203...pace_myth.htm# to headspace it). i was going to do the 375 whelen but i already have a 9.3x57(.366"). and i can say that 4-something something! since 150 lbs whitetails will be its main course, i'll only go 1600-1800fps in 350-400gr fn gc. i hunt in close cover, so 60+ yards is a loooong shot, 25-35 yards is more likely. 1944 98 mauser 8x57mm i've been thinking of taking it to JES(i like that peep sight) but i might rebarrel it to 24"(it has a 22" barrel). i doubt that extra 2" is a make or break situation, but i like the 24" over the 22". the 98 mauser NEEDS a timney trigger and i'll go with richard's stock( Richards Microfit Gunstocks ), it will be a wolverine style and either a blue coral or black walnut stock. i doubt highly that i'll get the chance to hunt elk or moose, but my sons' might and i'll just happen to have a rifle that they can use....it sounds good, don't it!!!

i used to own a 6.5cm and 120/140gr nosler bt. it was a one-shot killer on close cover deer. back in the day , i also used 22-250 brass when there was no 6.5cm hornady brass available.

what is your favorite? i've been sitting here for a couple of days and i decided i would try it, with some exceptions......
1. YOU hunt with it 2. NO rifle/cartridge that you would like to have
......and here i go. some people would say fer me, the winchester m94 in 30-30 with 150-170gr factory fn. i have killed alot deer with it. i also have killed snakes, grouse, pheasants, foxes, a 'yote or two, squirrels, feral cats and dogs, dove(i did it one time, i killed 3 or 4 of them, i was young and i couldn't refuse the triple dog dare...
then there is a rem m760 in 308 with 150gr hornady rn and imr, i think, 4064. i have killed a deer or three and my only black bear(396lbs). i luved that gun until the luck ran out of her. it was right after my black bear, it was like that she'd warned deer that i was coming. i remember the days that i could NOT see anything, even birds. then i'd show up the next day with a different rifle and it was like kicking deer out of their spot to get to my stand.i'd do this for several years and i'm glad that i sold her!!!! the 1898 springfield armory in 30-40 krag with 165gr ranch dog and some h4198. me and my son have killed deer and my teeth are cut on cast boolits but no, thank you. the tc encore in a 23" MGM barrel in 444 marlin with 300gr fn gc and 2400/tuft of dacron? mmmmm....i should say yes, even tho she is the main rifle that i use, but no. i have killed many deer with the 444 and 255gr keith, 265gr hornady fn, 275gr ranch dog, 280gr lfn and wfn gc going about 1800-2000fps(powders were many). the rem m7 in 7-08 with 139gr hornady fn(discontinued) with imr4320 is a killer for deer. the 18.5" barrel is a fast bolt action rifle. unfortunately, i gave it to my youngest boy. i have had 30-06 in multiple manufactures and the bullets/powders also. i can't say anything bad about '06 but its plain vanilla. ruger #1 in 270 and 140gr hornady sst and imr4350 is one of my most accurate rifles, the avatar shows the results. the 243 in multiple manufactures and bullets/powders too. tho i have killed deer with it, i will give it a solid NO!!! after the shot(be it behind the shoulder or shoulder of the deer) the deer would go 75 - 150 yards(1 would go 300+ yards from a failed 85gr x-bullet). its just me, but i find the .243" is to light of a caliber to use for 150lbs+ deer. 25-06, 6.5 creedmoor, 500 linebaugh and many others to boot used to be my main rifle, but............
i hafta go with oldie.....the semi custom 1898 mauser in 7x57 with a 139gr hornady fn and imr3031. i got an FN 98 action only, i can't remember the date, 1950's? then the rifle was a 20" douglas barrel(which i wanted a 18.5" barrel and my gunsmith{who was a good friend of mine, RIP} wanted a 22" barrel), timney trigger set a 2.5lbs, 'glass bedded, fajen stock and scoped with 3-9x swift(this was one of old ones, had a over-the-counter warranty not like they do nowadays!!!). the first time i took her out, i got my 20ish+pt buck with it. the antlers were about 11-12" wide and about 6 or 7" long. "but 20ish point buck!!! come on!!!!" you'd say. i'd say "count the points, if you would put wedding band on it, then its counted." i'd say that the buck was a 6pt, but my friends say 20-26pt. i gotta find that rack, i put it in a box years ago.....anyways i could it at 1/4 - 1/2" groups at 100 yards(5 shots/benched), for all the good that did, 70ish yards was my long shot, 30ish yards was normal. 300+ yards away, it had its own sound...it was like bam instead of bang, my dad could explain it better. i gave the mauser to my oldest boy and now that i have a 93 spanish and 98 mauser that needs rebarreled (93 spanish is going, i expect?, to 257 bob and the 98{i have aperture sights on it already} is going to be 375-06 imp), its hard to find a reason not to make the 7 mauser. however that rifle fitted me perfectly. well, maybe not now, being that i have only one arm now.
what is favorite rifle/cartridge combo?

yesterday i used g96 on my 93 mauser, 98 mauser(bought both at auction) and mossberg 500(12ga). i am impressed is all i got to say. it removed rust, cosmaline and all others. just a squirt of g96 and 0000 steel wool and i was amazed at my guns. g96 has a place on my reloading table, between ballistol and gunslick foaming bore cleaner.
the mossberg 500 was a piece of rust. i found her really deep between the corners in my gun safe. i forgot about her. 10-15 years of forgetting. i can't remember when i put an oily rag to her. but all is not lost!!!! g96 to the rescue!!!!! she is clean and able. i gave her to my oldest son to slay ringnecks, grouse, squirrels and whatever else he comes across. its a good shootin gun with rem heavy game loads #6's. it deserves to be out in light, not tucked away in my safe. besides, what good is it to have a one armed guy(me!!!) that can't shuck shells!!!
