My dream gun would be a Colt New Frontier with a 5-1/2" barrel and chambered in either .44 Special or .45 Colt with an extra cylinder in .45acp…

Ruger makes a blued Blackhawk .357/9mm convertible single action in either a 4-5/8" or 6-1/2" barrel. The list price is pretty close to $700.00, but I am sure you could find them elsewhere for less: Ruger ConvertibleRuger also makes a stainless steel version as a dealer special for Williams Shooter's Supply.....

I had a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt/.45acp back a few years ago. It was a great field pistol. I never used the .45 colt cylinder at all as it was such a joy to shoot in .45acp. I ended up selling it to a buddy of mine to help finance the move out to New Mexico. For my 50th birthday, my lovely bride got me a S&W m-625 with the 5" heavy target barrel. I swapped it out for a 4" Mountain Gun barrel that I picked up from Midway. It balances much better now with the shorter, lighter barrel:

Wow, that sounds like a nice score you got there! I would leave the barrels as is....Use the 5-1/2" for woods packing and the 7-1/2" for target shooting.

My main "Ranch" handgun is a stainless 5-1/2" Ruger SBH. I also carry a Ruger Bearcat loaded with snakeshot for the rattlers that tend to show up once in a while. My SBH is carried in either a Guide's Choice rig by Diamond D Custom Leather or a pancake holster by Lobo: My Bearcat gets carried in a simple Hunter holster and is usually thrown in my backpack or saddle bags on the ATV:

I grew up watching all the westerns on TV (Bonanza, Big Valley, Gunsmoke, Have Gun will travel, etc.....) and, of course, all of the John Wayne movies...... ;D In 1968, my dad bought a Ruger Single Six with a 5-1/2" barrel from the local gun shop. I still have it, except now it has a 9-1/2" barrel on it:

I haven't ordered from El Paso Saddlery for a bit, but I have always had good luck dealing with them in the past. For my .44 magnum Vaquero with a 4-5/8" barrel, I use one of two holsters from them. The first is a Model 77 "Tortilla" rig: And the second is their "Tanker" holster (This one is carrying my 4-5/8" .357 Blackhawk). This holster is great for packing when you are riding in a Jeep or on an ATV....:

Yeah, all of the pitting is on the outside of the barrel. She shoots like a dream!
Now that I am retired, I think that a trip to Alaska will be in my future... ;D!
