How do you guys trim your 500 smith and Wesson brass to make JRH? I built a holder with a rim on it and cut it off with my turning lathe

I used the harbor freight chop saw before I got the JRH brass. I drilled and tapped for a nut and bolt set up to use as a jig for proper length. Made getting the length adjustable and very repeatable. Final clean up was with case trimmer.

Well the gun is bought... now to get something to shoot... ordered 100 new cases & a box of ammo for reference, from Buffalo Bore, A Lee Collet style crimp die that hopefully works, or can be modified to work for the JRH, a set of RCBS 500 S&W / 500 Special dies, 2 boxes of those Lehigh Defense solid copper 330 grain bullets, & 200 of the Matts 440 grain gas checks... should have something new to play with in the next couple weeks

I've never had any issues with RCBS roll crimp on any loads I've shot for the 500.

You won't regret that purchase at all. I have both the 5.5" and 7.5" models. Sent both back to MRI to add 50 A.E. cylinders.

I figure I already have a custom blued 5 shot 50 A.E. Super Blackhawk... so this is just going to be a fun magnum JRH gun being as this is stainless, it'll likely see more time in the woods... the 50 A.E. was recently fit with a really nice set of stag grips, so now pretty enough to limit it's time in the nasty weather hunting

this is a stock photo... but this is what mine will look like... except I think the one I bought has a different rear sight that sticks out about a half inch... does anyone know the reason for this??? assume it allows more range of movement, but don't really know for sure??? this is the same seller as I bought from, note that the rear sight sticks out to the rear??? www.gunbroker.com/Item/805015001

Got a tracking number... Unfortunately, BFR won't be here until Monday, and this little shop is only open on Friday and Saturday ( owner did offer if it worked out, maybe I could come in and do the paperwork and pick it up during the week ) Thought I had ordered lehigh bullets for the 50... But turns out they were 475, not 50's... Matts bullets haven't shown up yet... But the problem I had would likely be the same... Thought I would get my new dies set up... Everything good, until I got to the Lee collet crimp die... It was squeezing on the bullet, not the case... bullets I was using were some .502 lead wide flat nose, similar in profile to the Matts bullet, that I had laying around...crimp die Instructions say you can actually squeeze a crimp groove in the bullet... Well before it did that, I ended up deforming the collet... I bent it back, and set it aside... And readjusted the seating and crimp die ( I had it set up to only seat, and had planned to crimp with the collet )... Stripped out the brass set screw on the lock ring, on the RCBS seating / crimp die readjusting... Replaced the ring with a spare Redding ring I had in the bin... Got a nice crimp with the readjusted RCBS die... Not really understanding what is going on with that collet... I knocked it out, and it is a 50 caliber collet

500 S&W... Was thinking the body may be too long... Collet is body length, so can't shorten the body... Would think if it was too long, it wouldn't crimp... Crimping on on the bullet, about where the 500 S&W case would crimp... So maybe that die just won't work... Roll crimp from the RCBS dies looks sufficient

Definitely too long. Those dies are made for specific length cases. They will make you one for the 1.4' through the Lee Custom Shop.

There is plenty of crimp from the RCBS die, and obviously the case is plenty stout ( used to loading those thin little cases where separate crimping had a real benifit ) will see how it goes with the roll crimp... Though I'm all about the custom... May want to order the 500 JRH collet later...
Looks like Buffalo Bore doesn't have the hotter cast bullet ammo in stock, as there was a delay shipping ( it's out of stock at Midway as well ) same issue Matt's on the bullets I wanted... I only have 15-20 of the bullets like the Matt's, on hand to play with... So may be slower going, getting to really shoot this thing.... Mrs is quilting next weekend... Thought buddy and I might have to find the time to shoot some BFR... his in 460 S&W

I have a 500 s&w collet crimp die that I shortened to work for the jrh. A friend has the same die he uses for 500L. It seems to work good and use it in combination with a roll crimp die.
