You will have the time of your life! You will also spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to figure out how you missed a target THAT BIG THAT CLOSE. You will also become a much better shooter...and, strangely enough, one day you'll be really angry at someone and ready to rip them a new one, and a little voice in your head will whisper, "That's not the Cowboy Way..."
You'll think, "I wonder where that came from?" But you'll hold your tongue.
Welcome aboard!

PS: Might I suggest Ritch Rand's superb custom hats?

I have a 3 1/2 inch stainless that came with a Montado hammer that is an excellent shooter. Also have pro to Base Mountain base pin to fit when I get a couple of minutes. Have to say I have a stainless bird's head grip frame that is just crying to be fitted.

Was in Deadwood and got a chance to handle an 1860 conversion Colt with good provenance to James Butler Hickok...gotta say that when they handed me the gun I really wished my friends Jeff Q. and JT were there with me to share in the experience...BTW, the trigger pull was sweet...

I have 2 Taylor's #3 Break-Top 3 1/2-inchers in .44 Russian (although, strangely enough, they are marked .44 Specials). Fit and finish are exceptional and Taylor's is a great company run by friends. Always call before ordering, though...like any of the Italian importers — Taylor's, Cimarron, Legacy Sports — sometimes what gets announced doesn't get delivered in a timely manner (or ever). I like the way they shoot...am finishing up a dual holster rig for them so I can use them in SASS competition. When I got the 2 Russians, Taylor's told me they were the only short-barreled Russians they'd seen in 18 months (which Is why I bought them on the spot)...

Picked mine up Sunday; will shoot it when I get home Saturday. Nice trigger pull out-of-the-box. Like the Montado hammer....

Heard from Lipsey's yesterday that a short-barreled .44 Special Vaquero was headed my way. I'm on the road a lot, but I'll fill you in when I get it...

..this coming week for the single-action self-defense class. Gonna shoot Flat-Top .44 Specials...there's a surprise. Lotta good friends will be there...Ken Jorgensen from Ruger, "Uncle" Dick Williams from SHOOTING ILLUSTRATED, Sheriff Jim WIlson, Dave Biggar from XS Sites...the usual suspects. Boge, you or your reprobate brother coming? Wednesday's my birthday, the big 6-0, so I figured GUNSITE would be a good place to spend it. Maybe some adult beverages after we put up the single actions and head for Murphy's!
Sorry I haven't been around much lately...BRUTAL travel schedule...6 days out; less than a day at home for 6 weeks straight...love the job, but could do without the airports!

BTW, have finished the first of the 2 holsters for my Scofield .44 Russian experiment...modified a Will Ghormley design for the stubby Uberti Schofields; the belt I'm basing on a CAS design I saw in my class with John Bianchi. Given the class, books, tools, leather, etc., I figure I'm about $3K into the holster...LOL!

Boge...take care of my gun, there, boy! Seriously, I have Uberti and USFA 3 1/2 inch birdshead .44 Specials and a Ruger Vaquero .44 Magnum designed to look like Boge's gun, with the exception of the loading gate, by Hamilton Bowen.I like Bob Mernickle's high ride and Rob L.'s Sourdough Pancake for SA concealment. As soon as In finish the set of holsters for my Uberti 3 1/2 inch Model 3s .44 Russians, I'm going to start on a shoulder holster for the Bowen gun...

Hamilton Bowen's real big on rechambering .357 cylinders rather than fitting factory cylinder in the chosen caliber; I tend to agree with him on my projects. I handled an S&W fitted with a DW barrel back in the early 1980s, but I don't remember who did the work. It was a very slick piece. I once had built what I thought was the ultimate .45 ACP S&W...I never liked the darn thing when I was finished with it and finally got rid of it.
For the rechambering you might consider Randy Lee at Apex Tactical (http://www.apextactical.com/), whose done some intersting exotic revolver work. He did a 629 for me that had a titanium cylinder cut for special moon clips that fit the little rebated area just ahead of the .44 rim. I shot stubby .44 Russians in it and it was as quick as a .45 ACP to load, with the advantage of being able to shoot Specials and Magnums as needed.
