The current issue of SWAT contains an article on a proto-type class at Gunsite on the use of the single action revolver for self defense. Ruger was a co-sponsor and the Ruger CEO was an attendee. There are several interesting techniques discussed. One is placing the support hand with the forefinger wrapped around the trigger guard and the thumb held straight up (i.e., the support grip is placed higher than the normal support grip). This allows much easier and manipulation of the hammer. It works. The strong hand's pinky is placed underneath of grip in the traditional way in this method however it is suggested that in one handed shooting that the pinky be placed inside the grip. Again, this permits easier access to the hammer. It is a good article but I would have liked more!

I think Michael Bane had a film crew there, and will feature the class on one of his shows in the Spring.

Um...is there a typo there?
Also, which thumb is being used to cock in the two-handed hold?
I find it very interesting that they're going to two totally different holds for one-handed and two: one-hand they do pinkie-under (and I'm guessing off-hand cocking) while two-handed, they cram the whole strong hand up onto the grip (and then do off-hand cocking)?
What they need to do is switch to a lower hammer (SBH/Montado or all the way down to Bisley) and do the same hold and cocking stroke one-handed or two.

Was a great class and BIG FUN! You'll see it next season on SHOOTING GALLERY. We're thinking of an Advanced Single Action Self-Defense Class (2 SAs) early next year, and I'll try to line up some public slots, which if I can pull it off I'll announce here.

I corrected the text. What I meant is that the supporting hand grip over the strong hand is higher (about one finger's width, i.e., where to put the forefinger--their solution is in front of the trigger guard) than is normally used for combat type shooting. I tried it out yesterday and found it faster.
I am real excited about this because as far as I can tell it is the first new discussion of single action revolver techniques in a long time.
Combine these techniques with the new Tuff Strip speed loaders for .45 and it speeds up the whole process: the shooting (faster) and more stable; re-loading (there is some discussion on this as well); and the new Tuff Strips which also makes re-loading faster.

So...which thumb are they cocking with in a two-handed hold?

Gunsite is having the single action defensive revolver class next year. With respect to the technique discussed above, this link has a number of pictures that may help explain it: www.downrange.tv/forum/index.php?topic=9365.0

Well, this is interesting for a number of reasons. I'll be it opens up a number of pro / con arguments too. But it also sounds like a way for Ruger to push their guns. I wonder what would happen if you showed up at one of these Ruger sponsored training events with a Colt SAA or a Uberti copy? Bet they'd toss your keester out the door.

The first class was indeed a Ruger event...May's class is a GUNSITE class. Bring what you want. I'll be running my 1956-vintage Dave Clement's Flat Top .357 or maybe my Hamilton Bowen .44 birdshead Ruger Texas Longhorn copy...

I tried the finger on the front of the trigger guard today. It is much better for me than my previous grip. I was shooting from the bench, testing loads, and this grip was steadier than using a front rest. Since it was new to me, I had difficulty being consistent at first. (the 40mph gustly winds didn't help either.) I think that with a bit of practice my groups will improve greatly!
I did not have time to try it standing. That will have to wait until tomorrow.
