One was for sale on another forum today and not for long either. PM'd the guy and we made a deal, should be headed my way shortly. Made in 2012, probably a very small run, I cannot find another anywhere. Its the 1-A Light Sporter and should be a fun shooter. The Krag is actually a very good round comparable to the .308 Win on the right platform. It was also chambered in the Ruger #3 but I could never quite get used to the look of the #3, and until today have only seen maybe one other Krag in the #1. Pretty scarce. Will post up when I have it in hand.

Congratulations on your new rifle. You are correct, the 30-40 Krag is an excellent old round. I have over 30 whitetail with that cartridge in a Contender 12" barrel.

Yep, my kind of gun. Very rare in both the #1 and #3. I bought the only #3 I ever saw in 30-40 Krag.
In either gun, it easily pushed a 150 grn to 2800+ fps.
No way to go wrong. Congratulations!!!

I think it will be fun, however I don't think I will try to get .375 H&H ballistics as your numbers above seem to show..LOL.

You could always punch the chamber out to .30-40 Krag Ackley Improved. Just saying. Ackley claimed ballistics comparable to the .300 Win Mag with the Improved version! Not suitable for use in a U.S. Krag of any variety, BTW!

The 30-40 has a very strong case and holds more powder than a 308 Winchester. In a modern strong gun easily matches the 308's ballistics. Here's a chart showing case capacities... kwk.us/cases.html

Not suitable for use in a U.S. Krag of any variety, BTW! Old P.O. made a lot of claims regarding velocity for his improved rounds, but I have never had any interest in using improved versions, preferring to just move up in case size if I need more poop. I like the Krag for what it is, basically a .308 Win on a strong platform like the No. 1. Even in my 95 Browning it does quite well and the Ruger is considerably stronger than a 95.

I've long thought a No.1 in .30-40 or or .303 British, iron sighted with a lighter shorter barrel would make a dandy "stalking" rifle.
(I'm in the process of picking up another No.1, sort of through happenstance, a No.1 V in .25-06 that I don't really know what I will do with lol)

I had the .303 Brit for a while, shot very well and like the Krag is a pretty good round in a stronger rifle than their military counterparts. Wish I had kept it but stock rotation had me in its grip!

Loads worked up for .45-70 in a No. ! or No. 3 I wouldn’t fire in any other rifle except Maulers made for the Siamese. And no Krag, Rolling Block, or Winchester 1895 would enjoy your .30-40 loads for a Ruger falling block. David Bradshaw

I agree. The only other rifle I'd fire the 50,000 psi loads in is a custom Encore Rifle.
Nolongcolt really snagged a good one here. The 30-40 Krag was the "American" version of the 303 British.
We took a #1 in 303 British to Africa in 2018. Had great one shot success on Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok, Impala, etc. One huge Wildebeest dropped from 202 yards with one thru the heart.
I had handloaded the ammo with 174 grn ACP (Similar to Barnes X) bullets at 2550 fps.
Doubt any animal could tell if the bullet was .003" smaller.
