I don’t have the arsenal the rest of y’all do, doing the full time RV thing, but, my go to is my .45 colt birdshead vaquero with a 3 3/4 inch barrel with a cross draw rig. Feel completely comfortable tackling anything needs tackling with it! Like I’ve said before that’s my do-it-all from home defense to hopefully this year hog hunting handgun!

There is something to be said about what circumstance has shaped for you. One weapon for everything, you know the grip, the balance, you probably know where it's pointing in pitch darkness. A safe full of guns can't give you that.

When not in town it really depends on what I am doing, how far I intend to hike and if weight is a factor. Usually I have an N Frame .44, a 1911 or a Glock of some sort. That said, I still change things up every now and then. Due to where I hike I tend to carry heavy for caliber loads in my 1911, or Glock 21 .45 that are my own brand. 250 grain +P .45 ACPs. They are a deep penetrating load and I am perfectly comfortable carrying them in Grizzly country. I often will carry my Glock 21 as well, since it carries a lot of rounds and weighs less than the 1911. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it is very practical. Not too long ago I developed a rather potent +P .40 S&W load that pushes a poly coated 170 grain SWC at 1200 FPS from a Glock 22. It took over a year to develop, and I have found myself carrying it quite a bit in town as well as sometimes out of town, as it is easier to shoot well due to its lighter recoil, and smaller frame size. I was personally never a big fan of the .40 due to the generally lousy accuracy of factory loads, so I decided to work on that and after about a year of T&E I had exactly what I was looking for. The trifecta of speed, reliability and accuracy. Here is a test target shot over bags: At 1200 FPS, it is hard not to like, so I have found myself carrying it quite a bit while hiking with the kids this past spring and summer.

I still carry and practice with my N Frames though, like my 4" 629. Running an El' President'e drill with full power bear loads will really show you if you can control a gun or not. Most guys talk a lot about shooting guns under pressure and/or in stressful situations but I rarely see anyone actually shooting their big bores fast. It is good to actually get out there and practice shooting fast and accurately with the actual guns and loads you carry in the woods/mountains.

That could make me like a 40 S&W for certain times. By all accounts you make outstanding ammunition. I would certainly buy some if there was a local dealer.

All the ammo is sold via the website/online store. It helps keep the prices down that way. I figured a business model, that works where anything 100 rounds and over I could include the shipping, and that has proven to be a good/popular thing for customers. I did not want to do the 20 round boxes and charge shipping on top, so I went the way I did. It is more work for me, but it works and people seem to like it. Plus for guys who hunt/hike in predator country, you get to actually verify that the ammo you purchase will feed/cycle in your guns, as well as shoot to point of aim and have enough to practice a bit, in addition to loading your handgun.

Great photo's & commentary Mackay. And you are spot on about people practicing an El' President'e with their big bore or their carry gun with full power loads. For those that don't know what the drill is, you start with 3 USPSA targets at 7 yds, but you can practice with whatever you have on hand. Your gun is loaded & holstered & your back is to the three targets, hands are surrender position. At the beep (timer start) you turn & engage each target with 2 rounds each, do a mandatory reload & engage each target with 2 more rounds each. Just to give you a goal to reach after you are practiced up, I once watched Todd Jarrett do this drill under 3 seconds, that's 12 shots with a reload! Mackay's ammo is superb, I'm shooting some 41 & 45 right now & it's as good as any custom ammo on the market. Loaded in new Starline brass. Dick

I'd be really impressed to see what it could be ran in with a big bore revolver. I already run Bill's,Mozambiques, and Collaterals with the 500L. Keeps me in shape to stop an animal charge.

Here are 2 of my favorite double action carry guns that I pack quite often when running around close to home or in & out of stores, etc. I also have one of them with me many times on the 4 wheeler. I always carry a couple of spare speed loaders with me. The 45 Colt Mountain Gun is cut for moon clips so I can shoot 45 acps in it & reloads are very fast. The first one is a S&W 696 44 special with 246 gr cast HP's, it's a dandy load in this gun. In the 45 Mountain Gun I shoot 45 acps loaded with a 205 gr cast HP & 2 spare reloads & I can reload it faster than most can reload a semi auto because of it being cut for moon clips. Notice I've cut the finger grooves off of the Hogue's on the 45 acp, I can't get along with those grooves so I just use my foredom tool & sand them off. Much better grip! Dick

I believe the original El Presidente was:
10 Meters Target spacing 1 Meter edge to edge Par Time 10 seconds
"Full" El Presidente was back to target, surrender position hands above shoulders and concealed.
Best I ever did was the 1980 North Texas Sections, 9.3 seconds and all A zone hits with a 4" S&W 57 .41 Magnum shooting the 210/950 fps POLICE load....
This was before the gamesmen with their toy guns took over and everyone shot in the same division. There was 1st, 2nd, 3rd and High Revolver.
Tried some of Mac's .41 loads a couple of weeks ago. At 20 yards put 5/6 (blew one) DA in a group about the palm of my hand with a 4" 57. Recoil was there but controllable. They should be about 1175 from a 4" which is what I am running from my DA guns as a max loading for control.
Dick...I had a 625-6 .45 ACP MG...and foolishly sold it... Need to correct that...

Bob, I think you're right about the distance, it was 10 yds instead of 7 like I said. The really fun match was at Dubois, Wyoming. It was a cash payout & brought in shooters from a lot of different states. Took me 3 years to win the revolver division and I always used a 6" model 610 S&W with 205 gr RN cast. Don't remember my time on El' President'e, think it was low 6's but I've held the record for over 15 years, wish they were still shooting but the primer shortage killed it, just like a lot of other matches.

El Prez with a 5 shot 696 would be extra challenging, he he.
No doubt it is a great test and with full power loads a totally different game from power factor loads. Heck I have a 280gr load for my 45acp going 900fps in a full sized 1911, not a load I shoot very often but it’s there if I want to pack a 1911 in the back country. I might just have to try a El Pres with power factor loads and then with that full power back country load and see how close I can get to matching it. Back when I shot USPSA I seem to remember going low 7 high 6 sec for the test but never all clean A zone hits. Always had a B or C in there somewhere pushing a touch too hard. I shot single stack division or limited 10 always running a Les Baer and a 230gr bullet at 730fps or so, mild but safely made the 165 power factor minimums for major (that backcountry load of mine goes 252 power factor!), of course a 10mm with Buff Bore loads at 220gr@1200 264 power factor...
I can guarantee it would be quicker than I can run it with a wheelgun of any flavor. But still probably find out what I can do sounds like a fun and worthy afternoon.

Around the house I carry a S&W 442 in a pocket holster with Buffalo Bore 110 gr +p Barnes HP.
When traveling or in town, it’s usually a Glock 26 in a Mikka pocket holster or a JMC kydex appendix holster. I just got a Glock 43X, but haven’t been able to shoot it yet. I carry Federal 124 gr HST’s in my 9mm guns.
In the woods it’s lately been a Smith 625 3” with Buffalo Bore 255 gr full wadcutters in a Threepersons holster holster from El Paso Saddlery.
