Yeah, I used to live in New York too :-) edit: And home made is not traceable! Where in NY did you used to live? A "little" town called Phoenicia, actually not in town, in their "burbs" called Woodland Valley up the road several miles from town. It's northwest of Kingston off Rt. 28.

It's northwest of Kingston off Rt. 28. I've been there. I raised my kids in Tully NY. Grew up near Monticello. My cousin had a camp in Copake NY and my girlfriend and I stayed there and did a lot of hiking in the Catskills in before he sold it in early 2022.

It was a good place to be from. Unreal trout fishing, plenty of small game, being paid by farmers for varmint shooting, venison every fall / winter.
Our "sheriff" was like Barney Fife (Don Knotts) of Mayberry who gave me my hunter safety certificate. No paper test, he just asked questions. Walking through town with a .22 on our shoulders was commonplace and I could buy all the .22 ammo I wanted at something like .35 cents a box at the local tourist trap / sporting goods store. It's a very different world now that I could never fit in.
Thankfully my dad moved to Florida years before he passed away.

Been to Phoenicia, the first time for the strangest of reasons. It was combined with one of my trips to West Hurley. Since I was a kid , on the wall of my grandfather's hunting cabin there's been piece of "rustic art", typical hunting cabin decor. Looking at it one day , not long after that trip, I notice it said "Made in Phoenicia, NY" on it. I'd been looking at it for decades and never noticed it.
For just "woods bum'n", not actively hoping to shoot something big, for a few years I toted my .32Mag Bisley or my .22 Long Snapper Bisley. But then came good amounts of coyotes, bears, very big coyotes that looked too big (state now admits to wolves) and unofficial "large cats" that the state says don't exist, until you show them cam pics and they say "released pets". About that time I thought "Hmmm... maybe I'll leave those behind. For a lot of years it was my .44 Mountain Gun. When I bought my FA97 in .45Colt that became the one. Still comes with me a lot. But lately, and I almost feel guilty about it for some reason, it's been a 1911.

Mostly a S&W 642 when going about my day. In the woods, if I'm already carrying a lot, I prefer my Glock 23 loaded with 180 gr Hornady XTPs over an almost max charge of Longshot for 1175 fps. If I'm otherwise traveling light, I wear the S&W 629 Classic 5".

My parents moved to the other side of "the res" for 20 odd years after moving from Phoenicia. Do you have the name of the Artist? I may know him or her.

Several trips to Gun Parts over the years.
The "art" I don't believe is hand made (painted). More of a print on a "slice" of tree. Probably bought at a yard sale nowhere near there.
(My side trip to Phoenicia was after I'd become obsessed with Spalding Gray's "little house that cried".)

We are not far from the Gulf of Mexico. If contact with brackish or salt water is a likely part of the equation, I may well opt for Glock. Otherwise, my default rural/woods/fields carry gun is a Ruger GP100, stainless steel, 4” barrel.

Around the house a model 10 38 Special. One snake load and 5 flat point solids. Out in the boonies or on the boat a Glock 22 tethered to my belt.

My CCW is a Glock 48 in a Blackhawk Serpa. I carry it a lot.
Bumming around, which I don't get to do much of anymore with my wife's health. Long days afield are a thing of the past. On the rare occasions I get to go out for a day it really depends on my mood. There are days I feel 44 Specialish and carry a 5.5" Flattop Bisley or a 624 four inch. Other days its a 5.5 inch Bisley CCH Turnbull version 45 Colt. Then there are days I feels like a 32 or a 22 and it will be the 631 four inch or a 22/32 Kit gun. Sometimes my old Single Six 5.5 inch or a Glock 44. I've come to like that Glock 44 a lot. Not much to look at, but then neither am I.

Almost always a Glock 43X for a trip to town because I shoot it pretty fair and it conceals well under minimal clothing. On the farm or around the house it’s a toss up of aM36 or a old 2.5” M19 with a Browning Buckmark for tractor duty. Any of those could be replaced by a newer S.A.-35 9mm that’s showing promise with 147gr FP cast. If I venture beyond the backyard into the “big woods” it’s my Ruger Montado 45 with a modified Bisley grip or a stock NM Blackhawk 41. Though rare I do have cell cam pics of black bear and cougar within 1/4 mile of my back door. And there is always the chance of bacon on the hoof. Just a few simple choices for an old man. Bob

Winter carry Glock 21 with Buffalo Bore loads. Summer is my Smith 38 airweight with Buffalo Bore 38+P or Ruger LC9 in back pocket.

Since this thread was born I have bought a Tisas 1911 in 10mm. I will be carrying it when I am doing a little work on my place or the deer lease. I love the 10mm a little too much, I have three of them, four if I count my carbine.

For outdoor non-specific purpose, I carry a single or double action revolver. 99% of the time, minimum 44 mag. Usually a heavily loaded 45 Colt / Casull or 480 Ruger. I like 5" or less barrels for companion carry. I really like the 4-5/8" and shorter Ruger Bisleys.
