Snyd, great info! Thank you! What do you think is a reasonable offer for a very slightly used model? Hard to say. I saw one here at a gunshow last year, 454 16", not sure on the tube threading or safety but he was asking 475 and said he'd take 4. I should have bought it. I know I could have sold it for 5 easy. I paid 625 for mine new with the HiViz sites a few years ago. Probably went for less in the lower 48. I'd say if you can get a 454 for less than 5 it'd be reasonable, 4 would be a good deal. There are some 480's out there that I think would bring more.

Thanks, Snyd! Now I am armed with some information as to their worth before I approach him.

If I ABSOLUTELY have to use a rifle it's a Marlin 1894 SS LTD in .41Magnum. Short, handy little carbine using the same ammo as the handgun I usually carry. For bigger stuff I have a Steyr Pro-Hunter in .376 Steyr. Takes down elk, moose, and any kind of bear with authority.

Yes sir. Doing a family trip. My three son's will do the bulk of the hunting (Eastern Cape) for the typical fare using the scoped rifles. I will tag along rotating between them with the 8x57 looking for a good nyala and a bushbuck, likely a wartie too. Dear wife will rotate with them as well. Also do some bush camping in Zim at Vic Falls and in Botswana at Chobe park. Wrap it up in Cape Town for a few days. The last family vacation as the two older boys wrap up college and move on (fingers crossed!!) leaving us with the 13 year old.

Remember this one Whit? Recoil at top-end is stiff, but it's actually a versatile rifle (450 Ackley). Downloaded with 300 grain cast bullets and it's a deer bagger. Uploaded with 500 grain solids and there's nothing on the planet it can't drop. -Lee www.singleactions.com

That rifle is evil incarnate -- it just has a really sharp recoil impulse and it transfers all of it to your shoulder. I don't remember the last big-bore rifle I shot that was that unpleasant -- hell, even the .577 NE double I shot a few years ago wasn't half as bad IMO.

It'll be 13 lbs, braked, with mercury recoil reduction. That Ackley has 160 ft/lbs of calculated recoil. The 600 Overkill has over 300 without taming. With a brake and mercury it drops to around 220 ft/lbs on paper. At those levels I've heard of folks detaching retinas. That said, I'm still building one. -Lee www.singleactions.com
