All you guys with your nice 475's and 5 shot 45. Im just curious what long guns you use for hunting/ plinking. No.1s lever action etc. im 35 and i find my self torn between moving towards blackrifle/rem 700's. vs leveraction/single shot.
Thanks. Pics are nice to

Well Rabbit, That question depends a LOT on where you hunt. Where I am at in Missouri almost every shot I have been given has been taken care of with a levergun or revolver or my Rolling Blocks. The only bolt rifle I have taken game with is a "special" 300 Win Mag and there is only one specific spot that I use it,and that is a 400 yard open hayfield, during the week before work, and yes I have a 500 yard practice range basically in my front yard. I will whole heartedly admit that I have a personal liking for leverguns and their cartridges but my patient execution af a shot with a 45-70 seems to waste a whole lot less meat on average that of a "just fill the tag" shot with an '06,270 or whatever. I found out way before reading Elmers books what a "slow" heavy bullet is capable of. NOW with that being said,if you live in Wyoming or some place like that,My ideas will probably be completely out the window.

I have decided that if I go hunting with a long gun this year, it will be with my old 300 H&H For the past 7 or so years, I have been hunting with this ol $200 30-06. It had a bulge near the muzzle, so I cut it to 16.5" and found it to be perfect. Beat up enough to use, short enough for shooting houses, and as accurate as most anything out there. It now wears a VX-III that is worth about 3x what the rifle is In fact I like it so much that I have bought an older one with the solid tube and metal butt to cut down like it. I always liked the old 760's better than the later ones.

Since 1995, one of three. A Rem M 700 rebore 338-06 lightweight last used on grizzly and black bear with the 225 gr Accubond. A Ruger M 77 factory 35 Whelen lightweight last used on elk and moose with the 225 gr Barnes TSX. Last, an FN Mauser 9.3x62 rebore last used in Africa with the original Barnes 250 gr X.

I have a couple of encores and barrels for general hunting use. I have a muzzleloader barrel too, but it blows so much gunk down into the trigger mechanism, I would choose a different mizzleloader if I had it to do over.
I have a winchester 94 .30-30 that was my first hunting rifle.
I also have a remington 700 5R .308 precision bolt gun and a remington R15 .223 as a 'yote rifle that drives tacks.

Assuming you mean rifles and not shotguns, the only long gun I own is a Winchester 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55. It hasn't failed to anchor every deer I've shot and is very accurate (1" or better at 100yds from a bench) until the skinny barrel heats up. Then the groups expand to 1.2"-1.5". Takes 5-6 shots to warm up to that point, something I'll never do in a hunting situation. I've been so pleased with it's performance, ease of shooting, and lightweight, I haven't bothered with anything else. Chris

I own several rifles but usually either my old Remington 600 in .308 or my 600 in .223 (re-chambered and re-stamped from .222 to .223....not the rare factory original) get the coyote killing jobs around the farm. I REALLY like those old 600's and 660's, I even keep one in .350 Rem. Magnum just in case Indiana is over-run by T-Rexs'.

If I could only own one rifle, it would likely be this 444 Marlin: Though not as practical, a close second is this 264 Win Mag: -Lee www.singleactions.com

Where is the love for 1874's? Assuming you mean big game rifles... New York recently added many counties to the "approved to use a rifle for big game" list. I hung up the shotgun for deer MANY years ago and never looked back with my handguns. Now that I have an option for rifle, I have been looking at 1874's in 45/70. It is too late for this season but there is always next year. Mark

If I go hunting with a long gun it is either my Browning B-78 single shot in 7 Mag or a Remington 700 that has been converted to a bolt action single shot 7mm-08. The Mag gets handloads with Nosler 150 partitions and more H4831 than the books list nowadays and the -08 loves Federal Premium 140 grainers.

Generally speaking, If I have to sort things out at distance I grab the ole Ruger in 338 Win. My wife has it's brother in stainless that she uses for coyotes.
If I need a quicker handling for inside 200, it is a 1932 Husky 9.3x57 with solids. My wife grabs it's mate in 6.5x55 with 156 grain Norma Oryx.
