Snyd, I have a friend with a Puma .454 that collects dust in his safe, that I am trying to talk him out of. Are you happy with yours?

if i were going serious hunting tomorrow [ big game ] i would use this rifle, the same one i would reach for if i had 'big animal troubles', my favorite overall " a 'brownchester' 1886 45/70 custom i had done back in the late 80s; very accurate, and can handle loads as stout as i care to shoot. [ 400 gr at over 2000 fps ] handles very well for me, and just gives me happy feelings to use or handle. for plinking, for me, nothing beats a 22 and this is my favorite, very accurate [with standard velocity ammo, which is all it digests] and the sights and long sighting radius [ 28" barrel ] let me hit quite well at least to 50 yds or so marlin 1897 with special order sights, etc.

I don't have a picture of it, but my dad's favorite rifle is a Siamese Mauser he converted to 45-70. 21" barrel, open sights, and it's also topped with an Ultra Dot. He uploads and downloads it for every scenario. And the best part is he can really hit with it. I'm actually building a clone of it except mine will be in 50 Alaskan. I have a feeling it'll be my new 'favorite' long-gun. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I like lever guns, even though I only have one at the moment. Rossi model 92 in 45 Colt. That thing is surprisingly accurate with only the "Red Rider BB gun" sights that it came with. Need to get some better sights to really see what the gun will do.
I've shot some really heavy 45 Colt loads in it, and other than the beating my shoulder takes with that curved steel buttplate, the main issue I have with it is the oversized chamber which can sometimes cause the brass to split with heavy loads. I may just have to start separating out the brass I shoot in that gun from the rest, and just neck size it.

I like to say that this is a close as I get but I'll own up to a few Marlin lever guns, a pair of 52Bs, and the 6.5x55 Winchester that the wife bought me...

Snyd, I have a friend with a Puma .454 that collects dust in his safe, that I am trying to talk him out of. Are you happy with yours? Absolutely. It's a keeper. Very accurate with everything I've shot in it. Between 45 Colt and 454 loads from 200-435gr, 6 or 7 different boolits. Mild to wild. I could get them all to shoot well. It picks up about 400ish fps over the 4"Redhawk with all loads. Bore slugged at .452 and it shoots .452 or .454 equally good. I haven't shot any copper in it. OAL and boolit nose profile determine smooth cycling with 454. No prob with any 45 Colt. Including that 355 WFN I shoot that's darn near a wadcutter. Something to check on that one you have your eyes on. I guess the older 454's didn't have the mag tube threaded in to the receiver which meant the pin at the barrel band would shear. Mine has the threaded tube. Mine also has the "lawyer safety switch" on top of the bolt. Earlier ones didn't. I pulled it, chopped it, ground the top to a disk and basically made a plug for the hole they drilled in the bolt. I guess there were a few made that were the best of both worlds. Threaded mag tube and no lawyer safety. I've seen pics and heard of a few with synthetic stocks also. 16" barrels seem to be more rare. Mine's a 20. I smoothed up the action some, adjusted the trigger spring, smoothed the sear and am very happy with the trigger. Got rid of a little creep. I have not replaced any springs. It works good and I'm not a cowboy action shooter, it's slick enough for me. I've posted quite a bit over on the Alaska forums and some at castboolits if you do a search. Here's the load I've been packin in it when the wifey and I are fishin or in the berry patch. Actually I think I bumped it a another .5 gr and went with less linotype so now I'm getting 435gr at 1500ish. I'm a lot more accurate with it a 50+ yds than I am with the 4" Redhawk. If the big brow fuzzy comes out of the brush headed for the wife down the gravel bar, I might stand a better chance of gettin on in him. Plus it holds 10 in the tube. A mini 45-70.

When I feellike carrying a rifle I will take my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington or my Ruger No.1 RSI in 7x57.

My 375. The scoped Bolt actions have been getting a lot of safe time since I found this. It's a pre-safety top eject Winchester BB94.

As an Encore what it can be is virtulally limitless. This barrel is a 6.5 Raptor. Made by opening the 204 Ruger up to 6.5. As you have figured out by the 12X Leupold it is virtually recoiless with this much barrel... I like to say that this is a close as I get but I'll own up to a few Marlin lever guns, a pair of 52Bs, and the 6.5x55 Winchester that the wife bought me...

Snyd, great info! Thank you! What do you think is a reasonable offer for a very slightly used model?

This is one of the few long guns I own at this stage in time. I sold or traded off most of my rifles for lack of use any more. This is a Whitworth in .416 Remington Magnum that weighs in right at 8-lbs give or take. I blow the dust and cobwebs off of it every so often to kill some wild hogs.
