I really like ribbed barrels on single actions. The first time I saw one of Andy Horvaths S&W barrelled Ruger Blackhawks, I knew I needed one. Through the past 100 years there have been various methods of attaching or maching rib forms to barrels. The King Gunsight company made beautiful Super Target ribs. Great Western made their Deputy model. Ruger makes the Blackhawk Hunter which for me is the least aesthetically pleasing but very functional. Fortunately gunsmiths have figured out how to install existing barrels or mfg new ones using modern techniques. I had to do a lot of research before I knew what to send Andy Horvath for my Lil Ruger build. Ive since sent him a 2nd blackhawk and s&w barrel as well as sending Jack Huntington a rebored Anaconda barrel to fit a ss new model flattop 45 colt. Your factory s&w barrel will lose about 2 inches. My 6" barrel is now 4". The 8 3/8" model 25 barrel i sent Horvath will be longer. My first Lil Ruger is shown below. Im waiting on the others. There are many similar builds. Maybe others will post some. Jack Huntington and Hamilton Bowen both produce beautiful shop made ribbed barrels.

Jack Huntington installs Colt Anaconda barrels to Blackhawk frames. John Taffin wrote an article about a 500 spc Black bisley. americanhandgunner.com/handguns/the-500-sw-special/Jack sent this image when we were discussing my project. Mine will be like the stainless blackhawk here. I think it will be a unique build. Jack says it will be ready soon. Al Siegrist rebored an Anaconda barrel for me. Most dont suggest going from 44 to 45 but he said no problem.

Actually the barrel should only lose 1”. Not trying to nit-pick at but..
I have quite a few with S&W barrels. Andy’s transition is the best….

Great Western had to have been subcontracting for their Deputy sights. I come to believe King made them, partially based on that one Deputy with a King stamp.

I have had Blackhawks that came with top ribs added but all got removed right away. Just a personal preference Ghirardelli’s g with the vent aftermarket look. One like the Anaconda shown on the Blackhawk are a different story. Like Greg, I’ve had a number of ribbed S&W barrels installed on single actions but only one still lives here. It is my first build with a S&W barrel and Andy used it on my 41 Special L’il Gun.

Some builders install a rib that’s a second piece soldered to the barrel. Done well that’s fine and very economical, but no doubt a one piece barrel is nicer
Smith and Wesson had a good looking Hunter barrel rib, but they weren’t known for great functionality I don’t think. Ruger’s system works and when cut down to 5.5 inches or so looks better.
I haven’t seen a vent rib barrel that improved the looks of a single action, but I’m open to evidence they exist. That anaconda barrel isn’t bad at all.
An ovate barrel is a nice blend of round and a rib, but they’re $1k. I assume the extra meat on the barrel is a good opportunity for optic mounting options, but I don’t recall seeing anyone utilize one for optics.

I really like the simplicity of the ovate barrel. This profile was the last profile I had built and I like it every bit as much as I like the S&W typed ribbed barrels. Still, banded, tapered round, heavy round, tapered octagon, straight octagon, ribbed or ovate, it doesn’t matter. I love them all and have or have had them all.

Maybe a perfect barrel will lose one inch but any complications or timing issues can cause loss of more. Andy Horvath finished one for me, and has another in progress. He said about 2" loss for each.

AS for my personal tastes, I prefer the solid rib overr the ventilated rib. Just preference, no reason. But I do prefer the look of the Great Westen Deputy, and have entertained thoughts of building up a Ruger in similar fashion. But, to my eye, only the 4" looks nice in that configuration. When Ruger first introduced the .357 Magnum Blackhawk, shown in ads with the 4 5/8" burrel, I thought then that profile was the handsomest looking sixgun ever, surpassing the 4 3/4" Colt SAA in sheer beauty. This is close to my ideal beauty constest winner: Bob Wright

Sometimes i pause on the image, mesmerized. Then I reflect that I could have saved many thousands of dollars by just sticking with Bill Rugers big idea.

One way to look at the blackhawk ribbed barrel from Ruger is it may be plain, however they did all the heavy lifting to leave a blank canvas to modify as you would. You could ventilate it like a Colt, or whittle and contour any old way and end up with a perfect integral rib.
