Magnaport will modify the Hunter rib. EDM cuts make a difference. I prefer the S&w look and the Anaconda is closest to the old King Rib. The colt rib has a nice elevation rise. The Ruger looks blockier higher than the others. Maybe the Hunter barrels are lighter contour than S&W N frame barrels. Ive never handled the Hunter model in person. Maybe a home project if you had enough desire, but by the time you pay sonebody to do the mods, might as well just do another barrel. But its expensive. Bowen lists the custom S&W barrel at $1250. Shortening a hunter barrel is listed at $345. americanhandgunner.com/handguns/mag-na-ports-sw-mod-69-44-magnum/

I think the reason the Ruger Hunter rib is so high is because the blackhawk top strap is quite high. I have plans to rework the rib on a hunter single six if I ever get my hands on one.

Some ribs I love, and some seem a little silly to me, and I can’t put my finger on why for any of them. I’m not sure what purpose they serve on a revolver, though maybe it doesn’t need to other than “it looks cool”.

ALWAYS WANTED A BLUE 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY WITH A S&W MODEL 25 BARREL AND A SS 45 COLT REDHAWK WITH AN ANACONDA BARREL. I HAVE THE BARRELS AND THE DONOR GUNS, BUT AT 79 1/2 Y/O I DO NOT HAVE THE PATIENCE, NOR POSSIBLY THE TIME, TO COMMISSION EITHER, SO I HAVE RESIGNED MYSELF TO PASSING WITHOUT EITHER.

Historically I never liked ribs on anything but a smoothbore and I'm not one that goes out for gun looks, but when seeing a Ruger Hunter for the first time I did a double take. If a feature doodad needs a purpose a rib may add some barrel cooling and weight up front to help tame muzzle lift of the bbl, and as a bonus a scope mount. Overall on the Ruger I think it's a Cool idea.
Professor's magnaported / skeletonized rib looks even more practical. Maybe I'll drill skeletonizing holes in my Hunter rib? NOT!!! :-)

Ovate or shouldered rib. Thats a great look. I talked with Mr. Bowen about doing an ovate but didnt send a gun off.

In the case of the ovate barrel , it took some micro welding on the top strap to make a smooth transition for the rib on the ovate barrel. Quite different from the picture shown nin the post jsut before this one.

Quite different from the picture shown nin the post jsut before this one. Andy Horvath did some welding on my blackhawk frame for the s&w barrel install. Jack Huntington has a guy who welds the frames as well because he told me at one point that the frame he is putting a Colt Anaconda barrel needed welding up front to accommodate the rib transition.

It shows in my Horvath gun because the bluing is a bit plum color on the scalloped nose of the frame and also where the ejector rod housing stud was installed.
