Im 44 and I carried a semi-auto for years as a Soldier and then a LEO. Now I rarely carry a semi-auto. I think in my mind I relate semi-auto handguns to a time I would rather forget and try to get back to a simpler time, back when I was happy. Same. I do not (cannot) own anything I used Over There. -Stan

I tried owning an ar. Didn't last a couple of weeks and went down the road. Brought back too many feelings I've worked hard to get past.

Sounds like a bunch of us feel that way.

There are definitely 2 camps. I've thought this out a bunch of times. Both sides are "gun guys", but those who hunt predominantly lean toward the revolvers and those who dont lean toward the "defensive" guns. Theres also a pretty good correlation between autos/town dwellers/2 legged defense, and revolvers/country folk/4 legged defense. My sidearm of choice is almost always a revolver but I do carry my itty bitty keltec p3at in my pocket when I'm headed to a "gunfreezone" WELL SAID. ME, I AM A REVOLVER MAN, FOR WOODS USE PRIMARILY SA REVOLVERS, FOR URBAN CARRY USUALLY SMALLER DA REVOLVERS. I HAVE PLENTY OF EXCELLENT SEMI-AUTO PISTOLS IN 32, 380, 9mm 40 S&W AND 45 ACP (MOSTLY FULL SIZE) BUT I MOSTLY OWN THEM, RARELY USE THEM. LATE LAST YEAR, I WAS BELT CARRYING A SIG 220 45 ACP TO THE DEER LEASE, FOR CARRY ON THE ROAD AND AROUND CAMP. AT THE FRONT GATE SHARED BY SEVERAL RANCHES WE RAN INTO THE OWNER OF 1 OF THE RANCHES AND SOME OF HIS LESSEES. 1 OF THE LESSEES SAYS TO ME: "REY WTF YOU DOING CARRYING A SEMI-AUTO, DON'T LOOK RIGHT ON YOU". WHEN WE WENT OVER TO THAT RANCH THAT EVENING FOR A "FRIENDLY" CARD GAME I STRAPPED ON MY CUSTOM 5 SHOT "NIMROD" STYLE 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY BY BRAD SHERMAN, WEARING NICE ELK STAG GRIPS, THE STARS WERE REALIGNED, LIFE WAS GOOD, AND I WAS BACK TO BEING 45MAN.

CATCHING UP ON THIS THREAD, SEE WHERE A BUNCH OF VETS CARRIED AN AR. WHEN I WENT INTO THE ARMY IN 1966 WE TRAINED WITH M-14's, AND IN 4 YEARS IN THE ARMY I NEVER EVEN HELD AN AR. ABOUT 4-5 YEARS AGO I SUCCUMBED TO "MSR" BULL SHIT AND BOUGHT A GOOD AR, FIRST ONE I EVER HELD OR FIRED, "IT GAVE ME A SOFT ON", AND NOW RESIDES IN A NICE, QUIET, SECURE PLACE. MAYBE THIS YEAR I WILL TRY TO TAKE IT OUT FOR SOME SHOOTING, NOT A BIG PRIORITY, JUST A THOUGHT IN THE BACK OF MY MIND.

I still use AR's a lot. Mainly because I have absolutely zero attachment to them. I do not worry if they get rained on, cow poops on them, diesel and grease or fall out the tractor. Pick em up, hit them with the water hose, oil them and check the sights. I have no "love" for them like I do my bolt actions. They are like a hammer, soul-less thoughtless objects that if they dont do their job like I expect them to they go in the trash and I get another.

Carried M4 and Beretta 92 day in and out for 43 months (in a 5 year period) during the early parts of Afghanistan and Iraq 2002-2007 and when I retired their usefulness for me retired as well. I look back at my deployments and am glad I had the weaponry I did but I am NOT heading back into that zone again! I feel a connection with my revolver and my beat up old model 94 in 30-30 that I never felt to the “tools of the trade”

I like them all and have used them all. In my younger military days I messed with every nature of military type small arm and some crew served guns. While I still “”like” them I don’t have much use for full auto stuff. I try and use what i feel is appropriate for the situation, I don’t take a 4570 levergun on a mountain sheep hunt, and I don’t take a heavy long range gun thru the south Texas brush. I don’t try and conceal my FA555, and I don’t carry my 38Super Commander on a bear hunt. If the primary objective is concealment then it’s an auto or small revolver, if it’s field use with some possible concealment then it could be a big revolver or a big auto 1911 in 45/10mm.
I like AR’s in that they require minimal maintenance and provide excellent accuracy, if they don’t then they get sold. I like my leverguns in that they are light, handy, can pack a suitable punch for whatever walks the earth, but they require a wipe down if inclement weather comes in. I also like a lever action because when and if I run into a rancher or ranch foreman while performing my abatement duties there is no preconceived idea of someone carrying a spray and pray weapon haphazardly on their property. Each gun platform has its purpose and I like them all, I just have much more use for accurate practical guns than any other, although I do own a few I wouldn’t want to carry but do like to shoot.

Hit the nail on the head (enthusiast) I also have a little of everything, because I consider myself an enthusiast… I noticed the difference, with military and law enforcement friends, years ago, that used and carried firearms regularly, but didn’t hold the same excitement I got from these tools…
Some carpenters can get by with a framing hammer, and some that are enthusiastic about hammers may have over a dozen hammers

I had a mental hick-up a few years ago and thought since everyone else had a semi-auto or an AR, I would jump onto the band wagon as well. It didn't take long for me to realize that I didn't really enjoy shooting them much. Semi-auto too often turned me into a spray and pray shooter. The plastic just didn't seem to hold any fascination as a tool.
I grew up in Texas as a young cowboy and fell in love with revolvers; Roy Rogers didn't carry no bottom feeder. After my foray into semi-auto, I returned to my roots; revolvers. The sunshine came out and I was a happy camper again.
I also discovered that I had a fascination with long barrels and the sight radius that they gave the shooter. My game is 100 yard steel. No one I knew had any long barreled revolvers and didn't want one. Most said they were too hard to draw from the holster. I decided that I would never walk down main street at noon and have a gunfighter, fast-draw shootout; so why would I care about holsters.
Once I got past what other people wanted, I decided to go with what I wanted. That sounds so simple and obvious now, but it took the education to sort that out.
I am the pied piper of revolvers. Every trip to the local indoor range has me inundated with other shooters wanting to talk and shoot my sixguns. Most have never had a chance to shoot one. Then they all grin like a teen age girl.

I’m the same way about the AR platforms. I’ve owned several, shot them a few times and sold them. They just don’t do anything for me personally. I have a beautiful 6.5 Grendel I got from Zeus in the safe wearing a Nightforce scope that has never been shot since it came to Oregon. Not sure why I still have it since I don’t like chasing brass.

Every single person who has ever fired any of my single action revolvers ended up wanting one. That includes city slickers who are overly enamored with 9mm's. But with the advent of the .30 Super and that 5.whatever millimeter pistola from FN and Ruger, there might be some people ditching their 9's for something smaller.
Personally I've got exactly one semi auto handgun and it's a Glock 20 in 10mm. Most of my other handguns are single action revolvers. And I think I'm the last guy on the planet who has never owned an AR.
