As an enthusiast I’ve come to the conclusion I need one military pattern rifle preferably .308 because then at least I can use it on 4 legged creatures as well and one fullsize high capacity automatic just in case god forbid the world goes to hell in a hand basket. The problem I keep running into is I just can’t force myself to buy them. Would I rather spend $1500 on a FAL or M1A that will spend most of the time in the safe or a nice Ruger Blackhawk and some ammo/reloading components. I know I need to get a few practical fighting firearms but the “fun” stuff keep’s winning with my checkbook.

You said military pattern, not military issue, so I would suggest you look into the Windham Weaponry SRC-308, which can usually be found for reasonable prices. -Stan

I'm not sure which but I asked at LGS about single actions tonight. He said they get some; but they sell as fast as they come in.

I don't see many revolvers of any kind out here.

North Gaston Guns has about 30 AR's and 50 bolt actions in stock. But there's probably 40 leverguns in there on the usual, including some very hard to find originals. Drift over to the handguns and there's probably a case and a half of plastic, two and a half of 1911's of new and collector's dreams, two of Double Actions, and three or four of single actions (half old Colt's). I've never seen a single Wrangler or any such in there, but in one case there was a Linebaugh,a Bowen, Two Hartons, and two Huntingtons, besides a few Freedom Arms. I guess it depends on where you shop. Then about 15 miles away is Hyatt's Guns. Finding what you want is not hard around here, but prices can get steep.

But,, I've been called old long enough to wear the title comfortably. Yeah, moral outrage the first time you open the mailbox and find an AARP magazine with your name on it. Then you start growing into it. Heck, many that laugh at old people never make it. I think congratulations should be in order when you achieve that honor. Hardly ever have I met a 20 year old wise man. But have met dozens if not hundreds 45 and older. I am 59 and I refer to my dad as "The Wise Man." Jeff

interestingly Bomgaars ( a farm store ) has the largest selection of revolvers in this area... almost as many as the big Cabelas store 40 miles away... and for 2/3 the price
in another thread, I mentioned that I kept my Inland Carbine, for my wife as a SHTF gun, when I sold off all my Milsurps 4-5 years ago... I decided a Ruger Gun Site Carbine, all tricked out was enough for me...

The Academy here doesn't have any firearms in the cases or racks I'm interested in, not one. When I check for primers I walk by the the counter and am always politely asked if they can help me. I really, really try to be polite when I say "no (sir or maam), you have nothing here I'm interested in".
There is a retired insurance agent who turned his office into a gun shop and he has some good stuff. He definitely doesn't have walls full of plastic wondernines.

Our Academy in Gastonia,NC always has at least a couple Colt replicas And usually a case full of Taurus and Smith double action revolvers, mostly snubs but a few 4" or 6". When asked, they say they can't keep a Blackhawk more than a few days. Should be telling Ruger something.

I have recently purchased two 1980s vintage .(38 Spl) Smith and Wesson Model 15 revolvers in excellent condition for under $450 each off GunBroker. One appears to be unfired and the other has very minor holster wear on the muzzle. They seem undervalued for what they are, while more recent or more popular caliber pistols go for two to three times the price on the same web site. But most lack the timeless, premier quality of the Model 15.
Even considering the upper limits of .38 Spl., the Model 15 is a paragon of craftsmanship compared to a Tupperware pistol. Yet the comparative demand for lesser pistols is greater. All I can figure out is that people lack an appreciation for the skills/craftsmanship and materials that went into the Model 15 and similar pistols. And steel and wood pistols have lost their cultural significance and connection to history making events for many people. They are neither valued art, history, nor craftsmanship.
Just my idea. But I can’t find another reason why I can buy a like-new Model 15 for less than a Glock. So yeah, dinosaurs.

I say it’s always nice to have choices. I’ve got a very well set up Glock 9mm that can reliably hit 8” plates at 100 yards which I use as my EDC. I also am getting back into big bore SAs for hunting and defense in the backcountry and purchased a 44 mag Big Boy this week. I can’t wait to start loading, shooting and carrying that Italian masterpiece. My heart will always be pulled towards beautifully blued steel and fancy walnut but I’m also very practical. I have custom leverguns I use alongside my ARs or Glocks, it just depends on the task. They’re all tools but revolvers and leverguns pull double duty as pieces of stunning artistic expression as well as utility.

My only AR was custom built as an sbr, select fire using an rdias and AWC suppressor. Almost exactly set up like the one I used in the service after the MP5PDW's 9mm cartridge proved lacking. Perfect for fighting from a vehicle or indoors.
My only plastic centerfire handgun is a HK USP Tactical 45. Again with an AWC. I haven't been able to afford a MK23 Mod 0. But eventually I will get one.
Those served me well in action. I'm used to them and have fought with similar guns and made it home.
Everything else centerfire is a revolver, lever, bolt or double made from real wood and steel. Most are customized for me.

Carried AR's of several types for 25 years, have 2 set up for serious work. The joy in my firearms comes from blue steel and walnut. My main home defense weapons are 2 automatic shotguns-short barrels and extended magazines - with blue steel and walnut. ( I really have four- 2 Browning auto-5's and 2 Remington 1100's - 2 is 1 and one is none LOL.)
