Warhawk if you are talking about the wood itself it loo0ks like pretty standard Walnut. If you are talking about that white spot, that looks to me like sapwood. That would be considered a defect for most stock makers - if that is what it is. I would have to see a real close up to or in person to tell for sure.
Personally, where it is and how it looks on THAT gun, I like it!

I really want a short levergun chambered in .50 Alaskan --- that'll be a project for next year some time.

Whit,
You really need to shoot John L's little 50 AK. It is a Marlin with full octagon 20" barrel and full mag tube, straight grip with cheekpiece on the straight comb. Dandy. You can direct traffic with it just about anywhere. For me it's an eazy one hand carry and the muzzle clears the top of my boot. Not to mention ballistics that make the 458 look twice in fear!

He thinks it's wood filler. Whatever it is, it was done by Marlin, the checkering and finish are on it.

my biggest firearms regret is not buying some of these no-longer-produced leverguns when I was younger. Things like 9422s, the different Marlins, and the Savages have become pricey on theused gun market. the first gun I ever bought with my own $$ was a Marlin 39A, circa 1980. I was 16, so Dad had to sign for it. I still have it; my 12 year old daughter is almost big and strong enough for it.

It's not what some think...rather its a cut-down 336 (30-30) with just a 1/4" of steel on that barrel that keeps it legal. My father-in-law used to mountain hunt off his saddle and "adjusted" his Marlin to make it handy in scrub and pines. It's not factory, but whoever did the work did a great job. It's a tack driver at 100 yards. Bob I also picked up an earlier 1894, a 44 mag... This 9422 has been with me since new in '75... This M56 is a TACK DRIVER!

Bob, Nice rifles. I figured the 336 had been cut to just over legal length. Good truck gun...

I love these show off threads. Get to display some of the toys. 1903 1895 30-40 vintage custom 1903 1895 35wcf 1914 1886 33wcf 1910 1892 44 mag conversion Marlin 1892 32 long 1896 Marlin 1881 40-60 Got some new stuff too. A couple 336's from 1957. A few 39 and 39a's and a Marlin Levermatic 22. Now if I can find a decent 62 in 30 carbine worth the price.

I should be picking up my very first lever gun tomorrow.
A little cranky 'cause I put it on "hold" and told them I'd be back a bit later with the money. Drove back up to the store an hour and a half later and was told they couldn't do the NICS check because they were all backed up. Wasn't a happy camper to burn the gas and tolls to back up there, but what can ya do? With any luck will post pics when I get it in my grubby hands tomorrow.
It's a nice pre cross bolt safety Marlin 39a in pretty darned nice shape with the original box.
