Nope... that's what my 480 Alaskan is for... in my defense... I'm not positive I could be that good of shot at a charging Griz... especially if he was charging me

Wow, I'd say they all had some help from Above! Glad to hear the only death was the bear.. I posted this in the 10mm hunting thread. "A Homer man shot and killed a charging sow brown bear at Humpy Creek last Friday. Kim Woodman, 57, shot the bear five times with a 10mm handgun before the bear fell about 6 feet from him. While backing away from the sow, Woodman fell and accidentally shot himself in the left foot." homernews.com/homer-news/local-news/2016-08-03/hiker-injured-in-kachemak-bay-state-park-bear-attack

This never gets old
Montana Grizzly Bear Notice:
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field. We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle the bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and contains a lot of berry seeds and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

Phil Shoemaker has been around a long time but he got real lucky on this one. He's one of the most respected guides in all of Alaska but if he was guiding clients I'd say he should probably receive a fine of some sort because that's stupid if you're doing it on your own but if you're risking other peoples lives that's a whole nother ball game. Just my opinion but killing that bear with a 9mm will get someone else killed on down the road. Very few bears are vegetarians..... if there's fish there are bears, take a gun that will protect you & your clients.

It seems like I read somewhere that he was an Army sniper in Vietnam. If so not exactly a person of average skill with a firearm under extremely stressful conditions.

You would think a man with that much experience would have been carrying something alittle bigger.

The performance of the 9mm ammo he used was close to .357 Magnum performance.
Still feel better with a caliber that begins with a 4.

Very few snipers use a 9mm & really I hate to say anything bad about a guy like Phil because he usually packs something bigger but taking clients fishing in big bear country & taking that kind of a risk is really rolling the dice. Like I said, some of the lower 48 fishermen are going to take 9mm's up there with "good" ammo & get sent home in a small flat rate box!
