That's really nice. Hard to believe this thread it 10 years old now. Lots of good info. Yep, my first of what has become the "Best of the Last" collection is the John Gallagher that is one of the first posts on this thread. It was done as a tribute to my father about a year after he passed (and about 4 years after he cut that cherry burl used on the Harton revolver)...I've always loved the idea behind this thread and wish it was sticky...it's a great resource for all of us to see what's been done and to give us ideas on what we want. FYI, just got an email this morning from Bowen...the next up is ready to ship back. So I'll be adding again in a couple of weeks. Down to just a couple left on this quest, and then will move to fitting out my woodshop with equipment Poppa didn't have in his furniture shop. Wild that a decade of my seeking out the best is drawing to a close. Jamey

Seeing the end of a journey like these is bittersweet. I am down to my last one of my Quest guns and it is hard not to look at a n ice old model and think, man what could I have that turned in to? The pile of spare grip frames, hammers and triggers and ribbed barrels all live elsewhere now but for me it is kind of like when I stumbled into the state of retirement. It as not gone smoothly or easily by any stretch of the imagination.

What a cool revolver. Those grips are incredible, I’d have shied away from crosscut mammoth ivory on paper, I wouldn’t have thought it would work well aesthetically. I’m glad you have better judgement than I do because they don’t only complement that revolver perfectly, they elevate it to an even higher level, and that is not easily accomplished. Very well done.

That is an exceptionally attractive revolver! Scott Kolar makes gorgeous grips from mammoth ivory, but Hamilton Bowen is no slouch in the artistry department either!

My (at the time) 10 year old son picked the blanks from among those SK sent me...when he saw it last night, he immediately claimed it and couldn't stop talking about how kewl the grips turned out...He'll be 12 in a couple of weeks, and I envision a trip to the range so that he can christen it. There are two more "best of the last" out, and he had a say in the particulars for each...nice to have him along for the ride on the back end of this quest.

This one just came back from Alan Harton's shop last week. Most of you know of my affinity for both the Model 58 and the 41 Special and this one actually includes the features I had wanted to see in a gun like this for several years. A member here offered me a model 58 project gun that he had set on the shelf along with a model 28 cylinder. The gun did not have a barrel which was perfect since I had been lucky enough to buy a Model 520 barrel earlier and I had sent it to Al Siegrist to be bored to 41 caliber. As you probably know, the 520 was a second N frame fixed sighted gun like the model 58 but it had a tapered 4" barrel. Hamilton came up with a set of his combat sights I had him do a white outline on and as you have seen in the other thread, I had a set of Roy Fishpaw N frame combats form 1997 that I sent to Alan. He fit the barrel, rechambered and fit the cylinder, did the metal work to fit the sights and round butted the grip frame then did a beautiful job of bluing the entire gun. I sent his two different 41 Special loads and that was what he regulated the sights for. The result is a N frame round butt tapered barreled gun with white outline combat sights and a set of finger groove grips originally made by the master grip maker. Think a Thunder Ranch combat revolver only in 41 Special and no Hillary hole in the side.
