where did you find the .454 cylinder for your RedHawk and who did you have fit it to your RedHawk? I've got a 4.2 inch RedHawk id like to convert to .454 but haven't came across a .454 cylinder I came across a stainless SRH 454 for sale that a guy traded into and sold to me cheap. Guns was literally new. I swapped the cylinder myself. Headspace, BC gap, endshake was all in spec. Sold the SRH with 45 Colt cylinder and the ammo he threw in on the deal and came out 50bucks ahead. If it were going to cost any money to do it I'd not do it again. No need really. A 45 Colt Redhawk is a beast and will handle higher pressure loads than a blackhawk. But, the cool factor is kind if neat. If I was gonna transform a Redhawk to something bigger I think I'd have Bowen do a 500L. hmmmmm......

Yep, cheapest way legally is thru our ffl. He can send it thru USPS, 45.00 bucks. Only I think it has to get sent back to him, we'll find out monday. Yup, it will go back to the FFL.

When I sent a base gun and parts to Gallagher a few years ago I FedEx'd it. They required next day air but had a money back guarantee if it was late. It was late so I got a full refund. FedEx free shipping! Since then I think their rates have gone up and I think they've got stung a few times. I got into a argument with a guy another time, they charged me next day air, it took two days, he tried to tell me it was 2 days from Alaska, no next day service. I asked then why in the **** did they charge me the next day rate!? They refunded me the difference. Last time I just used a local FFL cuz the turn around was not going to be very long and the FFL said he would not charge me a transfer fee to pick it up. He shipped is USPS flatrate total was $60. One FFL here wanted to charge me $100 shipping and a $25 transfer fee on return. If it's a base gun for custom project that is going to take a year or more and you know your FFL is going to be around to receive the return then save a few bucks and use him. If you want it sent back to you directly then pay a few more bucks and UPS or FedEx it yourself, then it can be sent back to you directly. Currently, FedEx "Next Day" from here is defined as "2 business days", and there's additional fine print about delivery times. All spelled out in their Service Guide. Next Day south from here just cost me $136. No question it would be less expensive to go USPS round trip through a FFL. Yup, they nail us. They charge us "Priority Overnight" rather than "FedEx 2 Day" as per their policy for shipping a gun but it takes 2 days. They should just charge us the 2 Day rate to begin with since it's not Overnight service. That was my argument that got me reimbursed the difference between Overnight and 2 day.

So all you guys getting gunsmithing, or custom work are paying that much? I guess you gotta make it worth it when you get something done. Yup. You guys in the Lower 48 have it good though. Next day air from Alaska gets spendy.

He can ship it to the gunsmith directly if he wants using UPS or FedEx, then the gunsmith can ship it back to him directly. He can't use USPS unless he's an FFL. He has to tell the shipper it's a handgun and they will probably only ship it next day air as per their policy.
He can use an FFL but it will be shipped back to the FFL. If he wants to use the FFL he should ask him if he will charge him a transfer fee to pick up his own gun. Some will, some won't.

I bought this 4" 45 Colt Redhawk back in 2009. Here it is the way it was born.... The barrel also reads Newport NH I removed the "Read Instruction Manual" Here's a pic of a 4" Redhawk from a Gunblast review in 2007. Notice it's marked Southport Conn and says Sturm Ruger and Co. rather than -Ruger- I remembered reading somewhere along the line that Ruger then at some point decided to make it a 4.2" barrel to satisfy the Canadians. I guess a 4" barreled gun is more dangerous that 4.2. My gun is definitely 4" not 4.2. Here it is in it's "Born Again" state as a 454. I wonder when/why/where the differences? Does/did Ruger make 45 Colt Redhawks in 2 different places? Did they start in CT then move to NH? When did they go for 4" to 4.2" barrels? Why -Ruger- and "Sturm Ruger and Co" rollmarks? Just a couple more Ruger mysteries to contemplate on a cold winter day

I see no problem getting components for the 500L. In fact, one can buy properly headstamped starline brass from Midway right now for half the price of 500jrh brass, which is only available through Buffalo Bore, made by starline. Hornady also makes 500L brass. Several outfits make cast boolits. I suppose .510 jacketed might be scarce but big whoop.
Bottom line, get either one or both!

OAL/distance of the bullet off the lands can make a big difference in accuracy. But depending on the rifle, the magazine might be too short to house a longer round.

The other day I was at the range wringing out a S&W 27-2 with some 357 loads and threw in the 500L just cuz I shot 10rnds of a 540gr load at 1119fps at the 7" paper plate. Standing unsupported, two handed. The front site is too short so it shoots about 6 inches high at this range, turned out to be 21.5 yds. I was guesstimating my POA lower than the plate and managed to put 9 on it, one off to the left. 4.5inch group for the 9. Gallagher says he's working on my taller front site blade. I also practiced shooting Bullseye Style. Standing, one handed. This load is 455gr, 15gr HS6, in the past I've chronied it at about 975. I tell you what, with the Rob Rowen grips with the nice palm swell it's easy to shoot like this. 4 inch group. I'll push the target out next time and see what I get.

Kinda telling, but I'm not sure what, the number of knowledgeable folks coming in on each side. A 180 degrees apart ! Nothing ported here and no experince with. From video seen, I'd not want ports on my CCW or house gun. Outdoor, rural, big bore, bear gun, seems a likely thing. Ya. It seems to be a subjective, "each to his own" kind of thing. For me it's a specific gun, specific caliber for a specific use. I have a Kimber MT 325wsm rifle I had MagNaPorted to tame muzzleflip/torqueTwist of the light whippy barrel. Major improvement.

Thanks again Lee for including us in this. I've got my eye on that mould! Did you have it designed to drop .513 505gr with Linotype? I seem to remember that you normally cast with Lino.
