FOR MY S&W 45 COLTS I MOSTLY USE BULLETS IN THE 250-260gr RANGE, YOU CAN USE HEAVIER BUT I AVOID THEM "THINKING" THAT THEY UNNECESSARILY BATTER THE PLATFORM.

My Ram loads for the Super Blackhawk never got visited upon a Model 29, and, with periodic maintenance, my 29’s saw some use. Without question, Heavy loads featuring heavy bullets test the frame in ways lighter bullets fired at similar pressure do not. David Bradshaw

Purely reminiscent. 35-40 years ago I had a 4 in., 25-5 and have been looking to replace it almost since I traded it but, other things captured my interest. Needless to say they're a lot more expensive today, if you can find a 4 inch. Doesn't seem to be a lot out there.
I never tried loading mine hot. In fact my standard load for it, among my several 45 Colt revolvers, was 7.5 gr. of Unique under a cast, 260 gr., KTSWC. I had other, heavier revolvers for long range shooting and hunting and that load was plenty for any vermin that might need killing, from 50 yards in, when we were on our farm.

Dan Not that I plan to use heavier bullets, but from all the short front sight talk I am planning to call Fermin Garza about front sights for the smith. I would think that having some adjustment for different loads is better than playing at one end of the spectrum and dancing around that front sight and what can be done.

Depending on the model, those front sights aren’t pinned in. The ramp will need to be machined and the barrel reblued to change the blade. You may be able to get a different height rear to help…

Thats funny , I was just getting ready to chime in with my 2 cents , which was going to be....I would be looking for a 25-13 . I have had two of them , still have one . They will both shoot thru the same hole , proper sized throats , pinned front sight and endurance upgrades , the whole package . I got rid of the lock mechanism with a plug kit from TK custom, only takes a few minutes to install and delete the lock . Anyways, congrats , I am sure you will enjoy the new gun .
I use a lot of unique with 255 -280gr bullets in this one , 454424, RCBS255SWC, LEE 255gr RNFP and 270SAA (using 7.5gr titegroup)

I really don't understand why they can make a 41 or 44 so precise, yet screw up the dimensions of a 45 Colt. They've had 150 years to get it right! .45 colt- the neglected oldest child Part that reason that ruined things is previously the 45 Colt was .454 or possibly larger. My 45 Colt Smith 25 has an 8 3/8ths barrel is one of THE most accurate revolvers I own. It's cylinder throats are .456. I shoot .452 bullets from it. They aren't particularly soft either. Couple of test I did was I shot some .456 bullets from it and to tell you the honest thruth they were less accurate then the .452 bullets. I use to be able to shoot beer cans off the tops of sticks at 100 yards, one shot, one can, and standing up. Don't know if I can do that now or not. When my best friend and lived in Denver his gf at the time wanted to shoot against me and he said no. You don't want to do that, but she insisted. She was on the Police Match Team. So we went, cut to the chase, not only ourt shot her with the 25 Smith, she did ask to see the beer can trick and I done that for her and she became silent. I also out shot her with her two pistols she brought, a 45 Colt Gold Cup and a 357 Python. When my friend and her got home she was raging mad. They almost broke up. The other extremely accurate revolver I have is a Smith Model 19 with a 4 inch barrel, pinned model. The Model 25 shoots everything I've ever fed it accrurately both jacked and cast. Can I do this all today? Probably not, getting old.

edk.... thank you. I should not have addressed my comments to you. A recurrent theme of threads on .Smith & Wessons chambered for .45 Colt centers on “ How hot can I load for it?” Persons I know who enjoy an N frame .45 Colt don’t pretend it’s a .44 Magnum. David Bradshaw ....but in Brian Piercs article in that old Hand Loader mentioned that the Smith 25 in 45 Colt can easily digest the 23K + P loads and with all his testing data talked a Smith and Wesson representative, that he stated the 25 with those loads would far outlast a Model 29 with factory loads. That's saying something!! My standard load for the 45 Colt is 9 grains of Unique with a RCBS 255 SWC that weights 255 to 260 depending on alloy. Comes out of that 25 with the 8 3/8ths barrel over 1000 fps.

The rifling on my 25 Smith in 45 Colt is a very shallow 5 groove that's more like for a 45acp. What is are the new one's rifling like and why didn't Smith make them deeper like the 44, 41, and 357?

Also, I just bought two pounds of Titegroup to use for my ACP so I could free up the 231 for my 45 colt. I may have to try some of the TG in the Colt too. What kind of grips are you using and are you using the stock front sight?

I am by no means an expert on the endurance upgrades and I am sure some of the Smith & Wesson guys here will know more on this, but I believe some of the endurance upgrades were a deeper cut bolt notch on the cylinder, new style cylinder bolt, and a radius was added the bottom of the internal pins so they were thicker where they attached to the frame, also believe that there may have been an improvement in how the crane locks up front. Yes, using stock front sight . I found some descent rams horn grips and use a black grip adapter with them bkgrips.com/ . Bottom gun is a 5" tapered bbl , giraffe bone grips and BK adapter
