I got a BFR in 460 S&W. It wears a Leupold 2.5-8, is 18" long, weighs more than a miata and is still a handful to shoot after a few cylinders. Shooting a 12" steel plate at 100 yards with a >400 grain bullet from a revolver is very satisfying. I wouldn't call it "super-easy" or "a piece of cake", but it is a pretty straightforward process, and lots of hits follow. Fun!
But, I wanted something a little more friendly to shoot with others, to make social trips to the range fun when I bring out the 12" gong.
So, I'm building/tuning a smaller revolver for 100 yard steel shooting, specifically with irons. A 32 (327) single six bisley with 6.5" barrel to be exact. Suddenly it is NOT all that easy anymore! Heck, sometimes it can be downright tough to hit the paper!
I'm getting the load and gun to just around 12" or so at 100, but it requires at minimum resting the front of the gun. Big difference from scoped and handheld artillery!
I'd like some tips from those who pursue the same activity, 100 yard shooting. Any general practices you guys follow, from setup, tuning, sight choice, customization, grip/stance/position, anything. I'm not going to tiny groups from a ransom rest (or even off hand) here, I just wanna make a 12" gong ring a bunch.
So! What's the approach you guys take with a new gun when polishing it for 100 yard shooting?

I'm NOT a 100yd handgun shooter. There is a 100yd open sight challenge thread that brought up a lot of good info, somewhere here on the forum.

"100 Yards and Iron Sights" is the thread you want. I had a SBH that I was 4" capable with, a picnic table and rolled sleeping bag. My loads and young eyes. I have a SBHH with a 2x Leupold and my loads, that a much better shooter friend can do 6" at 200 from decent bench set up. This what your asking ?

Except for TC Contenders I've always shot long range from the seated backrest position either using a ground chair from Crazy Creek or just my back against a log, tree or whatever is available..
If you find that above mentioned post it has a lot of the guys on here with their 100 yard targets...

Took my two 500L out yesterday and smacked a 12” square at 100, first round hits from both and called it good. One is a 4” JRH the other a 5” Bowen. If I’m hunting out to 100+ there will be an optic on the gun. 75-85 is my personal max for irons and hunting. My optically sighted revolvers routinely get used at 100-150, and I typically check impacts on an 8” plate at those distances. Any rest that will allow me to hold solid on my target without floating around or off target works for me, typically I rest the frame in front of the trigger on whatever support I choose. Some prefer resting the butt of the grip, some the barrel, and some their wrists.

I fired a group at 100 yds. with my 629 Classic 6½" using my handload of 18.5 gr. of 4100 under the Speer 270 gr Gold Dot. Just over 4" and was using a 5 minute red dot sight off sandbags. Here's another group at 75 yds. with the same load. Without the called flyer, it measures about 1¼" for 3 shots.

Honestly, 95+% of my handgun shooting the last three years has been 100 yards shooting. And not things made for it, mostly "pocket pistols" and 1911's. Physical issues have gotten me back into rifle shooting, so most of pistol shooting has been running a couple magazines through something at the 100 and 200 yard steel when I'm done. I hate to say it but pistol shooting kind of depresses me now because I can't do it a fraction of how well I once could only a couple years ago.

ONE LUCKY DAY, OFF A REST, I SHOT A 5.5" TLA IMPROVED No. 5 IN 45 COLT @ 100 METERS, 3 SHOTS 1.25" CENTER TO CENTER.
ON GAME, USING OS REVOLVERS, MY SELF IMPOSED LIMIT IS 60-70 YARDS, I TOOK A BUCK ONCE AT OVER 100 YARDS USING OPEN SIGHTS BUT THE HITS WERE HARDLY ANYTHING TO BRAG ABOUT.
AT THE RANGE I RAERLY SHOOT MY OS REVOLVERS AT ANYTHING BEYOND 55 YARDS.

I practiced long range shooting using an old Three Screw Ruger Super Blackhawk, shooting at 110 yards (plinking) and 200 meters on a silhouette range. My load was the 245 gr. Keith SWC with 25.0 grs. of DuPont (then) IMR-4227. Hunting groundhog up in Ohio I made one kill at 110 yards. At the old shooting range I was plinking at targets on the berm behind the target line. There was something white laying there, and I told a range assistant, Watch that white stuff there." He replied, "You ain't that good!" I fired two or three shots, and the object jumped with each hit. The third shot revealed what it was-a pair of man's undershorts! But I was shooting a lot back then, even plinking driftwood floating in the Mississippi River, at distance estimated to be as far as 300 yards. This my long range Ruger: Bob Wright pontIMR-4227

I used to shoot a variation of metallic silhouette that used iron sights (at least I did) and was at 100 yards for the rams. Also did a few shoots where the rams were at 200 yards. Both were shot standing, unsupported. Won a couple of matches too, which pleased me greatly. (Even a broken watch is right twice a day!) I was a tad younger then and so were my eyes. Haven't shot any long distance for at least 10 years.

Well, I work hard at shooting 100 yds with iron sights, and I also shoot some guns with red dots & some with scopes.
I have a hanging plate rack I use a lot for my 100 yd shooting. The round plates are 10" and can humble a lot of folks. But since I'm trying to put together another elk hunt with my El Dorado .45 Colt,, I'll be doing a LOT of shooting with that at 100 yds.

I love shooting at 100yds or beyond. I have shot 12" steel at 100yds off hand with my 5.5 500L for fun. Won't take a shot like that at game with that gun. With a 2X weaver or 4X leupold on my 45 Colt BisHunter or FA 454 it's a different story. I've tried shooting my FA 454 with a friends leupold 2.5-8 but anything over 4X is too much wiggle for me at 100yds. I'm better with 2 or 4X. I kick myself for selling my 2X Weaver, great scope. FA 454 with 4X Leupold with 240gr at 1900 fps I've killed many a paper plate at 150-175yds 12" steel beyond. I shot this Sitka Blactail on Kodiak at my max range of 110 with this gun and load/scope combo. 45 Colt BisHunter, 2X weaver, 355gr wfn, 1200fps. Seated on a hillside, forearms on knees. I won't take a 100yd shot at game off hand. Here's a target with that load/gun/scope. Ot past 100-110 yds accuracy with this boolit fall apart and it shoots a pattern. It's a 100yd combo. Same gun/scope, 255gr Lee rnfp. Same gun 4X Leupold 270-SAA 280gr. I worked up this load for sheep hunting but couldn't find a legal ram.
