I used to work out to 100 shooting half scale silhouettes. I prided myself in being able to take out rams at 100 with a full power 44mag and a 8 3/8s 629. I haven’t done any of that kind of shooting in probably 5 years now.

Used to. Used to shoot a 22 LR rifle with iron sights at a hundred yards too.
'I have way too much trouble with my eyes/bifocals now that the best I can pull off is 4" at fifty yards from a bench with a 5.5" 44 Special Flat Top, and I"m exhausted and my eyes hurt for a while after doing it. I have to turn my eyeglasses upside down so I can see the front sight and then try to get the fuzzy blob at fifty yards perched somewhat the same on top of it five times in a row. It's work these days.

I shoot "at" 100 yards but the danged thing keeps movin! Just kiddin. I have few issues so far shooting scoped handguns to 100 yards and have taken some game with them. I now find the challenge to be hitting a small target at 50 yards with open sights. Kinda think I should have started shooting open sights earlier in life and left the scoped stuff till later.

This was a rested three shot 100 yard group using scoped FA`s 475 and Buffalo Bore hard lead ammo. Was down in Florida for a water buff hunt...After reading John Taffin`s write up in the FACA journal about Freedom`s .41 mag model 83, I ordered a 10 inch .41 just like John`s and shortly after I used one of his 210gr XTP handloads to shoot the best 100 yard three shot group of my life... The gun carried a Leupold 2.5-8XThese were all rested shots from a bench. I doubt very much I could duplicate those shots today. However, before a hunt last year I sighted my 7 1/2" S&W PC 460 at 110 yards and the final two shots were in the red... Used Hornady`s 200 gr solid cooper HP ammunition...

I can join in. This place is filled with enablers. I got the bug for a 357 max and shooting 100 yards with iron sights. This was my first session out with 180gr XTPs. I also have a 41mag Blackhawk with a 6.5" barrel and a 2-7x scope that will keep them all in the red very consistently.

It's work these days. -------- instead of turning glasses upside down, i had my optometrist order them with the glass upside down in a normal frame. These work great !!! Tilting your head back to see thru the bottom of the lenses to get magnification doesn't work well; most of us drop our chin when aiming. now I can drop my chin and see through the top of the lense to get magnification of the front sight. The problem is getting some good glass. I find 6 or 7 out of 10 progressive glasses have waves in the glass; both vertically and horizontally. When you start trying to see out past 100 yards, all of the glass quality issues emerge. I order 4 pairs of computer progressive glasses at a time online and return the bad ones. Local optometrists don't like returns to their labs; if they even allow it. I've heard "within specs" too many times. Getting old is not for sissies. Prescut and yes, I shoot mostly steel gongs at 100 yards+; .32's, .38spl, .357mag, 357 Max, .41, .44mag Ruger, Dan Wesson, United Sporting Arms, T/C Bench rested and scoped; I will find a way to keep shooting.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original 100 yard thread.....I always shoot over wind flags. Push you can't "feel" shows up on the vanes and propellers. A mild breeze can bend a bullet more than you think over 100 yards, especially at handgun speeds. When Bradshaw motivated me to start shooting 100 yards, I wasn't using them. Two years in, the benchrest bug bit. If flags work for BR, why not handgun shooting? So I stuck 4 in the ground between the bench and the target. My groups immediately improved. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I for the most part only use red dots or pistol scopes anymore for hunting.
I generally practice on 8-10” steel to 200 yards with my revolvers….much farther with the single shots.
Been fortunate to take several deer and speed goats cleanly from 150-200 yards.
Most of my elk hunting is quite a bit closer due to the dark timber I normally hunt them in. 40-100 yards is the typical range there.
It’s just drop and drift…..and a lot of practice.

I really enjoy shooting at water filled soda cans at 100 yards. I call it "the most fun I have missing 95% of the time." I've only been able to drive out to the range where I can do it about every other month or less. I know I should be keeping real records in a log book to improve, and and at paper to measure groups. But I don't.
Mostly I shoot standing. But I usually lean my hips into the cement shooting benches. This seems to get rid of a bit of wobble from my lower boxy.
To my surprise, shooting revolvers or autoloaders rested is a whole other skill set. I haven't figured it out yet. I thought putting a gun on a bag would mean more hits. But not always so! Awkward positions or using new muscles mean more wobble when pulling the trigger. And dealing with recoil is a challenge.
T/C Contenders are a whole other story. They have enough barrel to use as a rest that I can usually get good success from laying one on a pile of bags.
I’ve had some luck with revolvers sitting and resting my arms on my knees. But I learned a painful lesson about not putting my elbows in front of my knees like with a rifle. Recoil pushing my boney knees into the back of my arms tweaked my ulnar nerve. Real uncomfortable funny bone feeling.
Adjustable sights are a game changer. I have dramatically more success when I can sight in to aim directly at the base of the can.
Since I’m shooting at fixed distances, I haven’t really noticed much of a difference between big-and-slow or small-and-fast loads. I usually have to “walk” them both into the target. Well, I did have good success with a 22 K Hornet, which is in a whole other ballpark of speed. But I don't know how much of that was from the flat cartridge, and how much was from the easy-handling single-shot T/C Contender platform.
Dust signature from misses is important to get feedback on what’s actually happening. It’s not fun to play the can-shooting game after it rains. I haven’t really had success using a 22LR pistol since I can’t see the impacts as well.
Generally 45 Colt (255-ish at about 900ish) seems to be about the best balance for me of manageable recoil, but enough thump to make a visible puff of dirt when it hits, and even take a can with a near miss by knocking gravel into it. I started filling the water cans so only something that really tore into them would knock them over.

This is my best group so far from a Freedom Arms with a Leupold 2.5-8. Personally I find it easier to shoot distance with open sights in the mid-west and west. In North Carolina where I shoot there's no where to see bullet strikes and most ranges don't allow for steel. The red dot is great to a point however I find approaching 100 yards they cover too much of the target for precision shooting.

Thank you, Sir.
Yeah, Ive heard of people doing that, but have not tried it yet. I think you're right though - it's time.
Right now (because it changes slowly over time), the "best" part of the lens for this is right IN the transition, which will be hard for me to pinpoint for her (eye Dr.), but she's a sharp lady, so maybe she's done this before for someone else.
Honestly, I'd be tickled to see the front sight and improve the 50-yard target image by 50%, because, also over the years, a fair number of "new" houses have sprung up in the distance.

I've used a LW Commander in 9mm on steel @ 100yds from standing position. I average about 50%. Not very good.
