Two very good loads that are somewhat standard & were used a great deal by Silhouette shooters was 18.5 grs of 2400 or 20.0 grs of 4227. Not maximum loads but definitely beyond the loads you mention above. The 2400 load uses a standard LP primer, you might try standard & magnum with the 4227, usually the magnum works best. This was with the 250-260 gr bullets mentioned.

I've said the same thing about a head on charge, I think the outcome might have been much worse. But Phil, too his credit did what he had to do with that 9mm & he stayed in the fight like the experienced guide that he is. I set around the campfire with Phil last year as well & he's really kind of quiet & reserved, he's not a bragger. He just did what he had to to to save those 2 clients plus himself & I'm pretty sure if he had to do it over again he would opt for a bigger gun but he kept his head & lived to talk about it.

First time I've been on the computer in over a month, still rehabbing from the knee replacement, its going OK, just sloooooow! The PH contacted me & said I have a free Kudu coming & said he would send me a plane ticket when I was ready. That's as good as you can do at this point. I thanked him & now I have to get in shape, I'm down 12 lbs from the last trip.

Going a little further, when I first went to Africa in 2001 I took a FA 475 that I bought from Marion Baker, Wayne's wife. They lived on the Idaho side of the highway. They hadn't been out too long & brass was a little bit hard to come by but I managed to get my hands on 100, a bullet mould, etc & I was ready to dive into the world of big bores. That thing almost beat me to death. About 3 cylinders full a week was all I could stand, actually sit, using the Elmer Keith reclining position. Anymore than that & I would start working into a flinch. It was a brutal first lesson into the ultra big bores sixguns (five guns) I think I was shooting 400 gr bullets but can't remember. I had a 4X Leupld on top & the gun was amazing as far as accuracy but it took every bit of my concentration to shoot that gun 2-3 times a week. I shot one big Wart Hog with it & a Guiniea Fowl & my PH decided he had to have it, I was glad to leave it in Africa, along with a FA shoulder rig, extra ammo, etc & when I got back state side I sent dies, bullet mould, more brass, everything he needed to enjoy a gun I'll never buy again. For you guys that like them, I salute you, keep eating your Wheaties, raw meat & gun powder for breakfast & I'll stick with my proven 480, just an opinion. And yes, I could have loaded it down to 480 horsepower but dang, I was going to Africa, who wanted to load it down!!!!

If you can eliminate the brass problem the big bores will cover all the bases without having to go to maximum velocity just because of those big, monster bullets, they do the work load without beating you to death. It's a good feeling having a 45-50 caliber revolver on your hip or shoulder if you get in a jam all of a sudden & need major horsepower to save the day. You can always load down, loading up can sometimes cause a problem. I've never heard of anyone wishing they had a smaller gun if they suddenly got in a bad situation & had to shoot their way out of it.

For you single shot pistol shooters, Precision Reloading has the Sierra 125 gr spitzer's in stock, they are very good in the 30/30 & 308's. No one else has them in stock.

James, don't tell me you can't pull this off one more time, it's a cull hunt. Sell off a couple of clunkers like that 16-4 & your least used FA & go show those boys how it's done, they would love having you along since you already speak Swahili A giant Waterbuck would be a nice addition to your collection, even if it's a monster cow, you know how big they are. I'll give you back some of those Speer Gold Dots you sent me. Mike knows his way around, he's almost a resident now. Dick

Ha! This post sounds like an emergency room reunion! I'll be 79 in a few days & I'm headed in for total knee replacement. Have a lot of burning in both hands, haven't fired a shot in over 4 months because they are so tender. It isn't carpal tunnel. They tell me it's something in my neck & I think they are correct, we'll see. Too much snow to do anything right now so I'll just try to get the knee better after surgery.

You read about a lot of attacks, I've yet to read about one where the victim wished they would have had a smaller gun. You have to try a few & live with a little discomfort......or maybe a lot! Many times junkies seem to be immune to bear spray/pepper spray, happens all the time. You need a gun you can stake you life on, because you might be.

I guess it's just me but I can live with it, if it doesn't have a manual safety I will not carry it hot. I'm not in law enforcement but I can get one out in a hurry if I'm motivated!

Welcome to the Single Actions Forum! For the rare person who hasn't heard of Shrapnel, he's a very knowledgeable gun man, hunter & historian. Probably knows more about the Battle at the Little Bighorn than General Custer!!

Because I've had them so long I've used the #358429, the Saeco #411 230 gr Keith 41 bullet, the 429421 & the 452424 the most & taken the most animals with those style bullets. In recent years, maybe the last 10-12 years I've transitioned over to a lot more MP moulds in HP design. At first I was reluctant to use them on anything bigger than deer but after powder coating came along & I gained more experience with different alloys, velocities & bigger animals I put more trust in HP's for taking big game, including game bigger than deer. I'm continually amazed at how effective they are & how well they penetrate. And the testing continues. Are they needed, I can't say for sure, most all of mine have gave complete penetration even on large African plains game, elk & my bull moose, I have recovered a couple, but under the hide on the offside, that's impressive in my book. And you can vary the size of the HP, also impressive. You should always use what you believe in, not what someone else tells you to believe in. If it's just deer, a good 357 load is all you'll ever need... I think!
