I'm considering taking a boar hunt in Tennessee and would like to use one of my single actions in 45 Colt with a 255 gr. Keith style SWC at around 900 fps.
I believe that load would have no problem with a boar, but have never shot one, or any other animal with that load. I read a story Linebaugh wrote where he stated his wife uses that load for all her hunting and said that it would go through a deer or antelope end to end at 100 yds. If that is true, it makes sense that it would go through a boar broadside at 50 yds or less.
I would appreciate anyone's comments that has actually shot a boar with that load or a similar one.
Thanks.

i shot a 300 pound sow last year at wilderness hunting lodge with a 44 special and a 250 running around 1060. the bullet went through both sides broadside and i shot it in the head about 30 yards away. never found any of the bullets. my dad used the same load on a 200 pound boar and the bullet zipped through the pig. check out the story on the pig taken with a charter arms 44 special in the double actions revolver section. havent had the chance to get one with my 45 but plan to in the next year or two.

Thanks guys. I'm always careful about assuming what I think is correct based on a lot of study actually is true. Many times what we convince ourselves should be true often times doesn't pan out in the real world. Your experiences give me a lot of confidence that I will be properly armed.

E.J. you shouldn't have any problem what so ever. I personally like the 1050-1100 range but put it where it belongs and collect your bacon.

Be sure to study hog anatomy, their vitals are a bit farther forward than most critters.

I've shot a few pigs with similar loads and bullets; They will certainly kill the animal, but if you're in thick stuff, the hog could go a little ways and may not bleed much. I'd recommend a hollow point like the 250 XTP, which is what I carry now. See my thread on the Single Action board about "cast bullets"...

I hunt hogs at least a half a dozen times a year. I do a lot of caliber/gun/bullet testing on them, and have found that they bleed a lot more when there are two holes. You don't always get two holes when using hollow-points, but I have found that you not only get an exit when using a wide flat nosed cast bullet, but they do a lot of damage between holes. This is the last one I shot last year with a Bisley Hunter and a 320 grain WFN at 1,300 fps. I prefer the .45 Colt to the .429 Magnum. I like 300 to 360 grain hardcast bullets. They kill with authority.

Do you think a .429 320 LFN at 1300 fps would have worked? ;-)

Do you think a .429 320 LFN at 1300 fps would have worked? ;-) Well it did! LOL! This is a pig I shot with a 320 .429 -- I just prefer .45s! I use the .429 Mag fairly frequently, and this particular Bisley Hunter is one of the most accurate revolvers I have -- period. I'm very happy with it. Again, I just prefer .45s to .44s......

Well they do! I have had more "discussions with folks that claim that more internal damage creates more bleeding, but there is only one hole from which to bleed. I prefer two and the bullets I use normally exit irrespective of the size of animal. But your maileage may vary...... ;D

Not a boar and not the colt but a 255 grain keith at 950fps from my 1911 will punch clean through a nice sized black bear and any deer it comes across for that matter. I also completely agree with whitworth that 2 holes are better than one...
