I am going to south africa for the 4th time. I am going to take 3 guns. I can't decide which one to leave at home. My choices are:
BFR 500 JRH
RPM/XL 356 Winchester
T/C Encore 378 GNR
T/C Encore 50 Alaskan

Seems you could take the BFR and GNR and have all your bases covered.
The RPM would be neat to bring just because not many of them make it to Africa.
On the other hand, if one Encore frame goes down and you bring the GNR and AK you've still got two guns.

I might be wrong but I thought you could only take two now. I did take three on my first safari back in 2001 but I thought the laws had changed. Anyway, I only took two in 2021. Enjoy your trip & don't blister your toes.

Randy make sure your barrels are 8" or more and scoped. Where does that come from? I have talked to 5 or 6 outfitters and professional hunters and all of them have said there is no barrel length requirement. I am hoping to go in 2025 and don’t want to get in trouble at the airport. |

I got 416 bullets yesterday. So, the 50 Alaskan is out. the 378GNR & 416 Taylor Encore definately goes. the List now reads:
416 taylor
356 Win.
500 JRH
378 GNR Which 3?

If you are going to South Africa, it is a rule. It knocks out a lot of my guns, because they have 7.5 barrels.

The actual minimum barrel length according to the official figures I found was 4.5”. I’m not sure where the 8” minimum actually came from as I personally know many people who have hunted in Africa with barrels as short as 5.5”. That being said, my shortest barrel is 8”
