It would kinda suck to have to leave a $4K gun in Africa That’s why if I decide to hunt the dark continent, it will be with a $800.00 Glock in 10 mm! 10mm out of a 5” barrel plenty of power for all of the biggest critters! Ha! lol Ps. Good to know the scoped 8” barrel requirement is an outfitter requirement not the government.

I’m thinking a semi auto in what could be considered a law enforcement/ military caliber might get confiscated upon arrival, depending on who there, is reviewing your items and forms.

Not a problem in SA like some countries. The 10mm will be just fine. There's not the silly gun laws you find in some of the banana republics. Seeing a farmer plowing the field with an ak47 on the tractor is perfectly normal, especially in some of the more "native" and poacher prone areas.

I'm confused! I thought it was legal for the locals to carry & use a semi auto but an absolute no, no for someone outside the country to bring a semi auto in for any purpose, scoped or not.

Dick We were informed last year absolutely no semi-automatics. We had to relabel our revolvers on our paperwork last year as the SAP decided they no longer like "revolvers". We had to label them as "hunting handguns".

We had to label them as "hunting handguns". Anything on barrel length or scoped/non scoped? All handguns require some type of "optic" whether scope or red dot sight. I did extensive research concerning barrel length and the only thing I could come up with was a SA government document stating 4-1/2". The 8" rule is coming from individual outfitters who apparently have had issues in the past. My outfitter, Madubula Safaris, was very adamant about the 8" length. When I questioned them while in SA last year, they couldn't give me a reason. They just kept saying "because". That being said, I personally know several people who have hunted in SA with revolvers having barrels as short as 5-1/2" with no issues. When we picked up our guns from the SAP in the Johannesburg airport, the only thing the officials were concerned about was that the serial numbers on the guns matched the paperwork.

I am going to south africa for the 4th time. I am going to take 3 guns. I can't decide which one to leave at home. My choices are: BFR 500 JRH RPM/XL 356 Winchester T/C Encore 378 GNR T/C Encore 50 Alaskan WHAT BARREL LENGTH IS YOUR 500 JRH?

That's another thing that's confusing. On my first safari we were allowed to take 3 handguns & I did, but on the second hunt we were only allowed 2 handguns & as Randy mentioned it had to be labeled hunting handguns. Plus they had to be scoped, but no semi autos, period. I don't think you would have any problem taking a 5-6 inch revolver as long as it was scoped & labeled hunting handgun, although I did have Bobby Tyler rebarrel one of my 45 bisleys with an 8" barrel. But looking back I don't think that was necessary.

To muddy the waters more, is a reflex sight considered ok/optic?

Pulling up the RSA laws wou”d be my first suggestion, rather than relying on outfitters and others. Then at least you can make accurate informed decisions based on facts. Then if the outfitter says something counter to law, you can debate or discuss. Semis are legal to import, IPSC shooters have done so for years. Optics are not a lawful requirement. The last two sentences are from my reading of the last set of RSA laws I pulled up, they may have changed. So check for yourself, it’s a lot like letting someone else sight your gun in and then you trust that it will work for you. It might and it might not!!!, but you’re spending a lot of money to trust anecdotal or hearsay.

James, I've always told you, if you're going To shoot one, shoot a big one! Yikes buddy you did shoot a big one! Two weeks ago when me & Bearskinner (Mike) were down at Freedom Arms we saw a photo of this wild looking guy from New Joisey on the wall behind the counter & he had a hummer of a Cape Buffalo. I could have sworn I had seen that mug somewhere before Dick
