I know it is heresy but even though I found several boxes of 38 Special and 357 mag loads, there isn’t a single gun in either of those configurations on the premises. Every one I ever owned in the last 20 years has been used for a custom.

The only 357 I get any use from in the field is the Maximum. I have 3, 357mags, my first a S&W19 from the 80’s, a 3screw flat top 4 5/8s that sits in the safe pretty much unused, and a 3” S&W13 that has house gun duties. I just don’t get much use in the field from them, preferring 41’s and 45’s, even my 44’s don’t see much use except for ammo reviews.

The whole point of this thread is to get down to exactly what you need to get the best performance out of all those different 357’s out there. Much like your last articles on the bigger bores. I for one know how much work it was to collect all that data. In full disclosure I have about a dozen .357’s and long experience with it going back to my LEO days. I’m circling back around to see how to get the best out of my sixguns.

Fermin, the last time I used my Flat Top I was shooting 220gr. Wadcutters PC’d running 1100fps. They worked great for trailing pigs in S Texas underbrush, and gave very acceptable accuracy and penetration. Best thing was no 357 ear ringing whenever a shot needed to take place without ear protection. The load is heavy for K frames and too aggressive, it’s ok in N frames and Blackhawks.

Wow. Just when I pick up a 357 after not owning one for 5+ years this post pops up. 27-2. 8 3/8 barrel. Only fired a few cylinders full this weekend, but it probably the best group I've ever fired from any revolver the first time I ever fired. Now to work out a load. Chance, shoot me a call tomorrow. Nice score brother!!

I HAVE PLENTY OF 357's IN A BUNCH OF FLAVORS, BUT, EXCEPT FOR A FA 353, JUST DO NOT USE THEM MUCH AT ALL, HOWEVER, WEAK AS I AM, I HAVE A 6" MODEL 27-2, EARLY S #'ed, ON THE WAY, WHY I DO NOT KNOW.

Nice score brother!! ***** Blued S&W M-27 (.357 Mag) with 8-3/8” barrel were common in IHMSA silhouette, especially in the formative years. Don’t recall seeing a nickel M-27 8-3/8” on the firing line. Encountered, however, the nickel plated M-29 (.44 Mag) 8-3/8” with some regularity, usually with the Baughman red ramp, not a Patridge. The S&W Patridge would almost certainly have been blue, a standard factory offering. Looking close, this revolver was made after S&W discontinued the barrel cross pin. And the Patridge front sight appears installed before the revolver was plated. (Assuming this is an M-27, not a stainless M-627.) David Bradshaw

THE BOX IS NOT PERIOD CORRECT FOR THE 27-2, NOR IS THE ABSENCE OF THE BARREL PIN, BUT STILL LOOKS TO BE A HECK OF A REVOLVER.

Box matches the gun in every way. So there you go. Serial# and features. Target hammer, trigger. Nickel. It even has recessed cylinder. I agree it doesn't match up to typical features but the box doesn't lie. I was on the phone all day today buddy but I’m still hoping to visit soon!
