Planning a 356 GNR on a Blackhawk. Rechamber a 357 or 9mm cylinder and run with it. Thought I'd found an appropriate 357/9mm convertible but decided against the one I was looking at. Still have a plan. Dies sitting on the self. Loading data on the shelf. 41 Mag brass somewhere out there. As usual, pictures say 1000 words

That as a 30cal would be interesting in your 30carb. Ruger.

Hi Axe
I had Gary build one for me about 10 years ago. I had him keep the 357mag cylinder and build me a 356 as well. It’s my favorite GNR and I have a few. I use 22gr h110 with a 158gr jhp or jfp. I’m working up loads with 2400 as I have quit a lot. Velocity for a 6.5” barrel runs low 1400s.

WAITING FOR BEARSKINNER TO COMMENT, I THINK HE IS IN TO THE 356 GNR.

While I haven't worked with the .356 GNR, I like everything about the design. Straight taper body, sharp shoulder, and a short neck. All the attributes you want in a bottleneck revolver round. Much less prone to setback than the B&D. For years I've been wanting to add a .356 GNR cylinder to my Bain & Davis: As you can see, the barrel protrusion is the standard .357 Magnum Blackhawk length (I still shoot the factory .357 cylinder). This gun may get a third cylinder in .356 GNR. The other conversion I've been kicking around is an 8.5" Blackhawk with two cylinders - .360 Dan Wesson and a .357 Razorback (which would be my .414 Razorback necked to .357). Both the .360 DW and Razorback use 1.40" brass, so I'll consume the entire frame window on cylinder length. Keep these posts coming Axe. They're turning wheels in my head. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I have a really accurate stainless 357 Blackhawk plus I bought a 356 GNR cylinder and it’s fits perfectly. I’m thinking a 10” barrel, TSOB base and a scope….

A five inch stainless 357/9 convertible Blackhawk has appeared! The 9mm cylinder could be my 356! Get Gary to D&T it for a DD Leupold base and mount a FA style front sight base while he has it. If I can cut a decent deal on it, I'll post pictures next week!

WAITING FOR BEARSKINNER TO COMMENT, I THINK HE IS IN TO THE 356 GNR. I ended up with Gary’s Prototype “Cat Hunter” on a beautiful 327 S&W with full underlug and non fluted cylinder. I’ve built a 6.5” SS Blackhawk as well. You can easily mimic a 357max performance, in a standard frame revolver. I have found the S&w loves 140-160 grain bullets over super light or heavies. It shoots them all well, but really cloverleafs the 158’s. I love the lack of powder, and lead needed to load! And NO recoil compared to 500’s, etc. A very fun and simple to load cartridge. I pack Fireform loads just like once fired, and there all very accurate.

Giving this a bump to see if anyone will chime in on the 356 GNR. I have a new model flattop convertible 357/9mm . Seems like a nice option for the 9mm cylinder that is not getting used. Would this cartridge be a candidate for the Martin/Bradshaw bullet.

I think the Martin-Bradshaw would protrude too far into the case since it doesn't have a crimp groove

I took a Rolling Block 356 GNR to Africa in 2018. Killed a huge Impala at 122 yards using the 180 grn XTP.
Also, have a 12" Contender so chambered. Very good cartridge and outperforms what the eye appeal tells us it will.

I’m pretty sure when I talked to him a few years ago he wanted the whole gun.
I didn’t ask him then but I wonder if he will cut the cylinder on a new model flattop with it being a medium frame?

CAN YOU JUST MAIL GARY THE CYLINDER FOR THE RECHAMBER? I was wondering the same thing. That would make it an easier decision. Shipping the whole gun tempers my interest considerably.
