I've been reading articles by and about John Linebaugh since the late 80's. I've always admired the lines of his revolvers. I also appreciated what he was doing with the 45 Colt. I figured I'd always admire them from a distance in magazine and on the web.
A while back an unfired Bisley in 500 Linebaugh hit the market and it was 99% what I would have ordered. It was mine. It has not disappointed. It fits my hand like it was made for me. It balances well. And it shoots better than I do. Once I had first hand experience I wanted one that was exactly what I wanted.
I sent John a donor and started the wait. I requested an oversized 6 shot 45 Colt. I love the 500 but I wanted one I could shoot all day or take most any game animal with. I was up in the air on the brass grip frame and ended up going with it. I like it. The stocks have great figure. Now that I have a case colored hammer on this one the 500 will get one as well. I also went with the octagon barrel because I wanted something unique. He puts a lot of effort into small details and it shows. I also got to talk to John quite a bit through the build. At this point I'd say he's probably forgot more than most of us will know. He's done some amazing things, worked with some very interesting people and accumulated a lot of experience through trial and error. Barranti made the holster for the 500 and it works well for the 45 as well. It carries well.
I've pointed out one aspect to a few people who've handled it and it made them all look perplexed. This is a right handed gun. John knows how to make a grip. Both frame and grip material. The revolver feels perfect in your right hand and it feels almost awkward in your left hand.
Below is the first 6 shots at 25 yards. I loaded up some 270 gr Keith style bullets over 20.0 gr of 2400. I was happy with the first shots. I put about 200 rounds through it today. The last 6 shots were at 6 water bottles that I set up. It was reassuring to go 6 for 6. It makes me smile to see what happens to the water bottles when that flat point smacks the water bottle. Instant vapor.
This is one that looks good (in my opinion) and shoots good. It's a 50th birthday present from my wife. To say she's special is an understatement.. I never expected to own one and and now I'm sitting here feeling fortunate to have a 500 and a 45.
