Not to sound like too much a simpleton or a smart-aleck, but the obvious answer to me is to just not shoot it.
You can still own the gun and honor your friend's memory by using the frame and stock set with another barrel. I know a LOT of fellas get a lot of entertainment from shooting the biggest, baddest, loudest, but I'm not one of those guys. That's their thing, not mine. I'd look at using that 45 Colt barrel with 45 Colt loads (old-days loads) or find a 32, 35 or 22 barrel an ENJOY the gun. When you "connect" with your friend while you shoot it, you can remind him he might just have been the better man" for having been able tolerate the recoil.
My best friend is recoil-nut. I am not. We still get along just fine.
I did not enjoy the Contender (as a pistol) in the 44 Mag., or even the 30- Herret, but I love the concept and really appreciate the design. I have a few, but all in Carbine configuration. Being a somewhat new design, (meaning I remember when they came out)it's unusual that I would latch onto the concept, but I have and I love them, but I won't/don't shoot anything in them that recoils much. They are LIGHT and accentuate recoil which is otherwise much more manageable (for me) in a heavy revolver.

My advice to people shooting my .358JDJ and .45-70 for the first time (both with T/C Muzzle Tamers) was always. "Don't drop it, and keep your mouth closed." Odd sensations both, feeling your cheeks puff out when your mouth fills with conclusion, or having your teeth clack together when your jaw is banged shut.

My first handloads have been thru it already. I installed training wheels.. I put 300gr XTP's on 10 grs of Unique, and 300gr SWC's on Trail Boss. Friend is borrowing the chrono, so no velos on those loads. That brass and more qued up for next gen.. Will take the step to starting charge weights of H322 and/or IMR 4189(think that's the one, data in basement) I grew up with a Ruger SBH and have 3 480's now. Understand recoil. Do appreciate advice and warnings, thanks guys !

Yesterday with nephew in town, my friend brought the chrono back. The first loads using IMR4198 , 36grs and Missouri "Hammers" 300gr SWC(big meplat) were tried and found mild, to me. More were run off at 37grs and you could tell more horse power was being generated ! The chrono showed me 1524-1537. We smacked some steel and had fun. Lots of guns were played with on my back range. I put the 430JDJ away for a day we set up paper.

Data found shows the IMR 4198 shows it could go higher yet. Then H322 shows it kinda picks up where the IMR4198 leaves off and can generate @ 150 fps more. I don't yet know where this adventure will take me, but the velos are getting close to the hood I want, time to start watching for accuracy. A scope likely in the guns future. Anyone sitting on a blue Leupold 2x LEER used for sale ? A trade for the 45 Colt 10" barrel threading for and with the Hot Shot screw in "choke" piece and some of the shot capsules and components ?

I have one of those 45/410 barrels with the long chamber and the straight choke tube for the Contender.
I've taken 9.3x74r brass and fire formed it to the chamber, then turned the necks to be able to chamber them with bullets seated. That gets the bullet out there to the rifling.
I've shot this with over sixty grains of rifle powder. I don't recommended doing this.
Long brass yes, absolute maximum loads no. The recoil impulse is ridiculous.

It's great with loads inside the realm of reasonable folk.
Trail Boss loads are a honey to shoot. I bet black powder would be great, although I haven't gone there yet on that cartridge.
It's just a lot of case capacity, and I'm not really fond of low load densities in palacial cartridge cases.

John.... meaning, similar to a locomotive backing into a string of rail cars, only smoother? Long powder burn places a premium on FOLLOW THROUGH. Lest shooter move before bullet departs. David Bradshaw

I've never been fond of handguns that weren't belt carry friendly. But then a 44mag SBHH fell in my lap, and BigBrownDog sent me a scope.. A tree stand gun ! the years are pushing me there..This 430 JDJ might as well be scoped and join it in that duty. So..who is sitting on a suitable gently used scope that would like to or be willing to part with it ? There are some PM dealings starting for the 45 Colt barrel and screw in piece for HotShot usage. The loaded capsules going to a rock solid member here.

I have a 44 Hotshot barrel... my memory is a bit unclear, but think 444 cases fit in the chamber without modification... I use them as brass shot shells, by glueing a fiber wad at the case mouth... I also have a 3 ball load, & load with bullets ( noticeably mild ) as the full loaded 444 is more pressure than recommended in the Contender... mine is a 10" barrel, & was always intended as a Skunk gun for the truck, so it has a Streamlight mounted on it... did some patterning on a big sheet of cardboard 3-36 caliber lead balls do 3-4" triangles at 25 ft... shot pattern looks good with the straight rifled choke tube... bullets shoot fine with the tube removed...

Makes me wonder if a 454 Casull would fit in the 45 Colt chambered one. Still not my intention to invest time or money in this platform. I'll use in good faith the 430 JDJ, load for it and hunt it. The 430's barrel marked 44 mag..

David Bradshaw The gun weighs nothing, the load is fast. Feels like catching a round from an M-61 in your bare hand.

Ouchy stuff, glove wise. So, no progress on finding a gently used appropriate scope or the T'SOB mount and rings. Honestly, not been looking hard. Life got busy lately. Then the 32's showed up. Then, etc..

Right now,, finding a scope & mounts like you seek are like finding a virgin at a frat house. Darn near impossible. I have a few barrels I'd like to scope,, yet,, due to NOT finding any at a fair price,, I'm just being patient. And I'm enjoying catching up on my casting etc,, so my shooting is taking a small break. I've been shooting the .357 Maxi's a bit,, but I haven't "improved" on what David & Lee have done,, so it's almost boring to try. Maybe,, until a proper scope comes along,, use the UltraDot. And the correct scope base uses the rear sight screw holes, so no drilling & tapping needed. You may be surprised at the UltraDot.
