I've mentioned that a friend gifted me a 44mag Super 14 Contender that's been reamed to 430 JDJ. I borrowed and shot a co-workers 44mag Super 14 Contender back in the late '80's and decided then I was not fond of them then. But my friend asked I not sell this beast and his step son asked me to try and blood it, hunt with it. So, progress being made . My friend has now passed. The step son is also a friend, called with the news, and said a 45 Colt barrel found that the family wants me to have too. Sigh. Did ask him to look thru the remaining gun stuff for the muzzle brake and maybe mounts, rings, scope. Those I will pay for. In watching videos of people shooting the bigger cartridges thru the longer barreled Contenders and likely G2 or Encores, am seeing people using their off hand to hold the fore grip rather than reinforcing the hand on the grip frame grip. Is this a recognized thing ?

I have super 14 barrels in 45-70, & 35 Remington, sold my 375 Winchester ( which wasn't a "super" but an "un-breaked" 14" & every bit as much of a handfull as the 45-70... after getting my wrist burned & abraded several times with long barrel revolvers... I've really tried to avoid getting in the habit of holding forward with my off hand... I generally try to use a field rest ( tree branch, tree trunk, rail in my ladder stand, etc. ) & a 2 handed hold on the grip... I have a couple rubber finger groove grips ( Pachmayr ) that work well for me... I've not shot any of the JDJ cartridges, but can't imagine they are worse than medium 45-70 or 375 Winchester loads, as both are close to the max that the Contender can handle... BTW... congrats on the new boomers... BTW #2... I have a custom 10" 45 Colt barrel that gets loaded at max pressures the frame can handle... & I'll have a bloody knuckle if unprotected, before I get to my 3rd shot ( should only need 1 for hunting )... I've not had the same issues with the 14" barrels... the 10" seems more abusive... but you may want to pre-bandaid that knuckle before any extended bench work...

Thanks guys. It came with the Pachy's. I've gone to wearing a glove or pre-band-aiding the appropriate spot when the 480's starting coming to roost here. All advice welcome and read.

On the big Contenders and Encores keep the pointer finger of the support hand out from under the grip spur, let it ride on top of the spur. That will keep TC bite off your finger. If you hold them down, and make them come straight back they can be nasty [like shooting out of a narrow window in a blind} if you don't let them come up, they are going to come back hard. The recoil impulse of the cartridge makes a difference too as my 30-06 is SHARP and fast where the 45-70 is slower and pushier. The 358 JDJ was a mixture of both but not bad, if you let it do its thing and not try to hold it down [in a narrow window. The 45-70 has a factory brake the 358 was magna ported and the 06 no brake. It will have a brake before I shoot it again. Pachmayrs have been on my T C's from the start 45 + years, I find the Gripper profile too sharp and square so use the Presentation style on all of mine.

Yes do watch out for that spur as it can nail you pretty badly. I do have breaks on my .308 and 7.08 Contenders and I always wear gloves and wristbands anytime I shoot anything sixgun, semiautomatic, or single-shot above a 22.

Make that BRAKES not BREAKS-- when I dictate instead of type with two fingers The Dragon Package doesn't always pick up the difference in word meanings'

Yes, many people shoot Contenders with the support hand on the forend. I find that grip to accelerate the recoil effect with heavier loads, so I don't use it . Also, if your gun has a sling swivel stud on the forend, you will be introduced to a new level of pain! I will also point out that FOR ME, placing the offhand pointer finger on the front of the trigger guard spur may cause the action to open in recoil ... one heckuva undesireable situation! Instead, I place the finger ON THE SIDE of the spur, which alleviates both problems. I've used wood, Rynite, and Pachmayr Grippers and Presentation grips on various Contenders. I feel that the Grippers do the best job of attenuating recoil. They're ugly, of course, but ... they do the job. The long bolt on the Presentation is also susceptible to bending on the heavy recoilers; the short bolt on the later Grippers is much more durable.
Over the years,I've used nearly all of JD's Contender creations, some of them a great deal, with favorite big-bores including the .375 JDJ and ..338 JDJ No. 2, and the ..45-70 in 14" unported and 12" Ported. The most brutal have been the .45-70 14" unported, with wood, and 6-1/2" unported with wood (that one was a gift) The 6-1/2 " was so brutal it would blow the battery loose in an UltraDot in just a few rounds. I had to switch to a Leupold 2X, and drastically reduce the loads.
Actually though, my 10" unported .44 Magnum with full charge loads and wood will also REALLY sting!

"NOT FOR ME! ALSO PACHMAYRS ARE MANDATORY." My short answer,, would be to agree with John.
And yet,, Ken has also explained things in more detail,, so I also agree with his posting.
I use Grippers on mine,, and have even gently ground away a little rubber in a few places to make them fit my hands better.

Yeah, am thinking this 430 JDJ is gonna be, or could be brutal ! My 1st round of handloads were half TB and half 9grs of Unique( NOT duplex) with a Missouri 300gr SWC. Actually thinking that a good bullet choice for the cannon. Those loads mild and quite similar in recoil and boom. There is a bit of room left for more TB, certainly the Unique can go up a bit, but maybe time to jump to the H322 or IMR4198 starter loads. Just on the Leupold website and they no longer show the smaller lower powered scope. A 4x and a 2-8x only. Seems the M8-2x gone. I got one from BigBrownDog for the 44mag SBHH. I see the 430 JDJ as a 44mag with more range, so thinking maybe a scope with more power ? Sooo, Leupold the gold standard for scopes, but what else would you consider ? Burris seems available and say about a third less. Other names to look at ? Am going to friends house Sunday, invited to come shop thru remaining shooting stuff. Hoping to find mounts, rings and a scope then. But..

Grab a Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6 pistol scope if you see one.

Since for me, a long shot with a handgun (even a TC) would be 150 yards, I dont care for more than 2x magnification. I start concentrating more on my wiggles and less on trigger squeeze and follow through. This is probably a stupid idea right now, but have you looked on eBay for a scope?
