That's a pretty neat set-up. I am looking to not pile a bunch of money into this platform though. It is not a gun I wanted. Have picked up and put back down Contenders many times. I may keep looking for a used appropriate pistol scope, keep the Ultra Dot for one of the 480's ?

Dots = fast acquisition Any range beyond 50 yds. is enhanced greatly by some magnification 2X is enough, 4X shows your pulse

9X shows the world turning
had ( may still have ) an older Burris 3 X 9... only way I could use that kind of magnification was if the gun was benched, & bagged solid

Nice, simply put Gemihur. Am finding I agree. Had a dot type sight on a RH 44 years ago. It was fast enough, and good for 2 eyes open on moving targets too. I just found I could shoot it no better than my 44mag SBH that fit comfortably on my belt. Also why Contenders got put back down. Am thinking I'll have to start the search for a used low power long eye relief scope.

Dot optics are solid and fast. But Contenders are capable of fine accuracy out to 200 yards; especially with flat shooting cartridges. For that reason, I prefer some magnification. Most of my TCs have 2.5x, 4x, or 3x9 power glass. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

One thing I learned on the first round fired from my 30-30 Super 14: DON'T use a pistol perch and have your elbows anywhere near the concrete table top of the shooting benches at the local club. My elbow hurt like Haiti for 30 minutes. Barrel flips up, grip goes down.... BAM! Ouch!

Oooh ! I remember an article on the 50-70 in a TC of some sort. Seemed a reasonable way to thump big stuff. Am thinking that stock would make it more difficult to pack around in the field ?

Got fresh batteries for the Ultra Dot. The red dot was looking all fuzzy and goofy until I remembered I was wearing cheater glasses. Sigh. Will likely not put this on the 430 JDJ . From my limited experience and advice here, will start looking for a low power long eye relief handgun scope.

‘.... shot a co-workers 44mag Super 14 Contender back in the late '80's and decided then I was not fond of them.... .... seeing people use their off hand to hold the fore grip rather than reinforcing the hand on the grip frame grip. Is this a recognized thing ?” ----bula

Warren Center’s tip-open single shot has a low bore axis. Boosting velocity from the closed breech boosts recoil velocity. When Sierra asked me to add .45-70 Springfield to data development for the Contender----Thompson-Center had just added .45-70 to Contender options----I winced. Already a devotee of the Pachmayr Presentation stock, and more recently the great Pachmayr Gripper for the Contender, the .45-70 pumped my respect for Pachmayr.
A Contender shares none of the elegance of Bill Ruger’s falling block No. 1, yet Warren Center incorporated two powerful attributes in his single shot: clean, light trigger & fast lock time.
The Contender with Pachmayr grip doesn’t look right with a wood forend. Fortunately, Pachmayr designed its own Contender forend. A mounting bar adapts forend to standard and long barrels.
Offhand, Contender * 10” bbl----conventional 2-hand, Isosceles and/or Weaver. * 14” bbl, etc----support hand holds forend. Gun arm acts as a buttstock, elbow slightly bent. David Bradshaw

Thank you David. The frame here has Pachmayr Presentation grips and fore end. The extra 45 Colt barrel has Pachmayr fore end attached too. Finding proper mounts, rings, scope and getting barrel drilled and tapped up next. Have 27 cartridges to whack apart and add to the loading que too. I still haven't waded thru all of the accessories that my buddy kept throwing in the box, 2-3 boxes of filled shot capsules from T.C., etc.. From the number of his home made shot shells it's apparent this guns side job was garden pest removal.

Encore 45/70 15 inch tapered no brake factory barrel shooting a 550 Cast at 1500 is nice. Somewhat brisk.

NOW getting confused. In the bottom of a box, 2 boxes of 44 Hot Shot 7 1/2 capsules. Also a screw in piece about 3" long with straight "rifling". In the 45 Colt barrel that has a veeery long chamber, one of these 3" straight rifled pieces installed. The extra one fits the 430 JDJ barrel. So, were there 45 Hot Shot capsules too ? Meant for 410 ? Hmmnn..

While I want to understand the hot shots nwether in both 44 and 45 , or the 45 can take 410, etc.. I'm not generating any interest in using them my self. I have a battery of bird guns. So, the 45 Colt barrel with a VERY looong chamber, the insert, and hot shots will probably go. Am wanting a T'SOB set up and scope.
