The #5 essentially combines front strap of the Colt single action army and the back strap of the Colt Bisley. The Ruger Bisley was inspired by the #5, but is bigger and longer, and has more knuckle room. The general consensus is that the Ruger Bisley handles heavy recoil much better than the Keith #5. It might be worth mentioning that while Elmer Keith is a giant among gun writers, he was hardly a giant in stature, some contemporaries putting him as short as 5'4" so even if he had proportionally large hands they were still fairly small compared to many. I've never shot a true Colt bisley, I would say they look a little awkward. Kind of how classic shuetzen rifle stocks tend to look more artistic than practical. While I’m a touch over 6’1”, I don’t have huge hands. Large work gloves fit me well, but my trigger finger is pretty short. I have an Aluminum RW Bisley Junior that will soon get fitted up to (and cerakoted to match the blue) a blued 4 5/8” NM 44 spl, and an Aluminum Kaytod Bisley that will be fitted up to a 5.5” NM SS 44 spl Bisley. I have not held onto a Keith number five, but I imagine the Bisley Junior will be a better fit for me. The Aluminum will make those two guns perfect field revolvers for me. My last three fingers just barely fit on the Bisley Junior without my pinky overhanging. I have not held onto a keith number five, but about half of my pinky hangs of an XR3/SAA gf, and this makes me think that the Bisley Junior is better for me than a keith number five. Seems like lots of fellas I know can’t get their pinky on an XR3/SAA at all. I am thinking about talking to Ronnie about a +.3” XR3… I have been working on shooting standard Bisley’s better, but I’m just not very consistent with them when standing on my own two feet. I shoot better with the XR3 vs XR3-Red, as well. My smaller hands just seem to have better purchase on the smaller frames. Thank you Ronnie for giving us all so many wonderful options!

I was talked out of a #5 and into a #9 by Ronnie. And I'm glad he set me straight. Ya well there Tommy LongBoy. Whatchin you duck under all my door ways here id say you had 6' 1" covered when you were about 9 years old there buddy. hahaha. Im 6' 1" Like Matt and i got a crick in my kneck just lookin you in the eyes. Hahaha. Poor ole Fermin said all he could see was up your nose and like having a wall with 2 legs standing in front of him. Just pickin on you young Man but you are one big hunk of a dude. You Have huge hands wether you think so or not and i know cuz you shook hands with me. I dont have fingers , i have sausages with a nail on the end and i just laughed cuz you wanted the k5. The keith 5 was not going to work for you. I have a new one called the AMAN which is a Bradshaw .400 longer for a gentlleman named Tony who i felt like i was shaking hands with and Orangatan,or sasquatch. I like it. I have already switched four of my favorite big Boomers to it. Matt The XR3 Red + .300 is absolutely Bitchin and you need to talk to Lee Martin who is 6' 2". He is Long and slender with long fingers. He loves it and spurred the development of the Martin Hybrid which is the XR3 Red + .300 with a Dealer backstrap and a frame to grip frame transition that mimics the BFR. Gimme a hollar. You Guys got my number. R

And that's why I always recommend that people actually talk to you before ordering. It was a huge help to me.
I liked the look of the #5 because I liked all the magazine photos and pictures on the internet. I had never handled one. The #9 is a really great option for people wanting the general style of the old #5 but who aren't horse jockeys.

Would you guys recommend trying to take some of the brass hump out to better follow the frame angle/lines? Thanks. Unbelievible how well these RW frames fit. Gun is a NM FT 44 Mag.

We like to follow something like this on the frames that we dont want to cut and refinish. As Bradshaw says, a slight French curve. Just kinda slicks her up and makes it look more flowing.

Not as perfect as some posted but very happy with it. Especially pleased with the proportion and feel of the grip on a stubby octagon. Very much appreciate being able to purchase such a quality frame. Thanks

Ronnie I was reading thru this thread again for like the 100th time and I want to swap out my bisley gripframe on my 480 Ruger. And I can't get past your finger groove gripframes. The BFGS and the BFGL but I am not sure which will fit my hand best. I currently have a potato judge gripframe and it fits me well, but my hand seems a tad cramped, don't get me wrong I shoot it well and have no issues shooting it, I actually seem to shoot it better then the standard Ruger bisley gripframe. Can you post an overlay of both the BFGS and the BFGL over a NM potato judge? My hands are not large but I am not sure the BFGL would fit me? Thanks Scott

Another addition for the brass grip frame collection - a 7 1/2" 357 New Model with Ronnie's Potato Judge +4.
