Newly found respect for you guys. I have a 1994 SS .45 Colt / .45 ACP convertible BH that since day one I wanted a Bisley grip frame for. Multiple calls to the Ruger parts department looking to buy a Bisley frame not only met with negative results on obtaining one, they denied the gun was ever made! They said it was only made in blue steel despite the fact its product code is KBN-455x! Anyway, recently I found a complete SS Bisley frame which was straight out of the cast and it had proud metal and cast marks all over it. After getting it "fit" and functional I have to give kudos to those of you with the skill, patience, and hand tools to get a frame to fit AND finished because after working on that hard SS I ultimately gave up on having a factory look and I am accepting some crude outward visual appearance. Maybe next time I'll START with a RW frame?

Got a great big ole box of happiness from RW and the crew and started working on fittin it up. No fancy pictures yet but it did dawn on me some may be struggling with how to hold these down so you can work 2 handed. This simple little wood jig works so well and takes all of 2 minutes to make from scrap wood. 1. Cut the point. 2.Hold the point on the frame and tap the wood to mark the locating pin. Then drill it. 3. Then drill a random hole where you can put a bolt and washer to clamp it down. With this simple hookup by reversing, it you can do both sides. Turn it on its side and you can get the ears and the trigger guard. Like I said, not rocket science but may take out a little fear of how to do it.

It looks great! How in the world did you get that curved section of the grip frame so even?

How in the world did you get that curved section of the grip frame so even? If you are talking about the back of the grip frame that is courtesy mister Ronnie Wells. As noted, the Lightning grip.

All-Righty-Then , , , finally got around to getting this back together. This gun was set up this way for a while with a plough handle grip. Felt fine for shooting but it always looked a little out of proportion. Then Mister Wells made my dreams come true. You know, having a Lightning/Thunderer style of gun, , , that works and is easy to load for. Don't know why but the Birdshead never worked for me, but the Lightning does. Built for easy lightweight packin it has the aluminum frame. Probably never gonna see anything over middle of the road 44spl.level loads. O my that aluminum works so easy fitting was a breeze. As the grip is a bit abbreviated, I added some extra girth at the bottom to make it easier to hang onto. And just for fun and a little different look I rounded the front of the trigger housing (grip frame). No chance to shoot it yet. I know it's gonna bark but wonder if it's gonna bite too.

A little hip howitzer. Shades of a Civil War howitzer with a cylinder. A regal Hip Howitzer. David Bradshaw

Really NICE work, I like how you did the front and trimmed the ears, I’m assuming to follow the curve of the back of the hammer. Speaking of hammer, nice trim there too.
I have noticed the short barrels bark is way worse than the bite,,, but if it bites I m guessing it turns into a 44 special.😁

How did you get the matte finish on the frame and barrel?

How did you get the matte finish on the frame and barrel? With stainless simply rubbing with the GREY 3M Scotch-Brite pads leaves a very nice, brushed finish that looks like factory. Secondary plus is any little marks picked up during the day can be easily rubbed out. Gun always looks new. Matt blasted finishes must be reblasted if they become marked up, which they will.

Does anyone know how the rw Keith no 5 compares to the powers Keith no 5? Powers makes good stuff, his is steel, and 2 pieces, Ronnie Wells are one piece and either Brass or Aluminum. And with RW you can choose options like which trigger/hammer you plan to use, and you can get longer versions and more clearance behind the trigger gaurd etc. I haven't used Powers grip frame, but had considered it. I spoke to Chad at Chigs grips prior to ordering from RW and he advised he has done grips on both RW and Powers grip frames and advised he felt both were excellent quality. Brass or Aluminum will fit easier, Powers will accept bluing, but may not perfectly match the same bluing on the Ruger frame as it is a different alloy. Rugers have a spotty reputation for accepting bluing.

Can someone point to a page in this thread that describes in great detail how to fit aluminum grip frames to SS Blackhawks with all the tools and techniques included. I have two aluminum RW frames I bought last spring, and I’m working up the courage to fit them myself to a couple of SS FT 44 special Bisleys.
